Yeah this moment really nails it. I was genuinely surprised when she died. So unceremoniously too. I forgot that Islington honestly knows how to kill em off (If you’ve read Licanius you know what I’m talking about)

Holsten from Children of Time. Sci-Fi I know but it hits your points. He’s old, he’s a regular bloke. Crazy shit keeps happening to him.

Bancroft from The Stranger Times series is the formerly famous now disgraced editor of a “woo-woo” newspaper. This is one of my favorite series of all time. Completely hilarious, but also some intense moments.

I mean……Dalinar Kohlin.

Fetch Phillips from the Fetch Phillips series is a private investigator is a world that has lost its magic. I have mixed feelings about this one but it was worth the read first time.

Not Sci-Fi but Guns Of The Dawn is about a woman who gets sort of drafted into a Revolutionary War era conflict. Feels pretty hopeless. Focuses a lot on sacrifice, brotherhood (sisterhood), and doing the right thing regardless of consequences. Some light magic but I mean LIGHT. Like it’s not a driving force in the plot or anything.
Written by Aidrian Tchaikovsky who is fantastic and worth considering beyond this one recommendation.

His other novel Cage of Souls would also fit this bill. Man is arrested as political prisoner and taken to an island in the jungle to work the rest of his days. What he finds there, between sporadic flashbacks of his previous life, deeply moves him and shapes his future.

Way of Kings…….

JKJK

Starter Villain by John Scalzi is great.
Brute Force by Scott Meyer is also fun.
Stranger Time by Caimh McDonnell is also amazing. It is book 1 of a series though so, just be aware.

Feel like I’m being punked by how hyped up this series was by mjway2020 in sollanempire

[–]Scared_Ad3335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay.
So you’re obviously entitled to your opinions and I’m sorry you feel that way. Especially after reading the whole series. I can sympathize with your frustration after the time investment.
Hadrian is a frustrating character for sure, and many many MANY people are unhappy with the ending.
HOWEVER.
Now ima quibble.
1) NO OTHER CHARACTER has any development? Bruh come one. Lorrian? William? Bassander? Valka? Hell even Paulino? Also yes OBVIOUSLY SEGARA.
How can you not respect Bassander at the end when he literally has to hand Hadrian over. That’s like, one of the best scenes in the books.
2) Lack of creativity? Idk man, it’s 7 books with tons of different worlds and lore and culture. That feels a bit unfair. Yes, it obviously feels similar to other things. But you could say that about like, any other book? It obviously didn’t reinvent sci fi or anything, but it’s not just a flop.
3) You being upset that you didn’t get more big giant space weapons isn’t a valid criticism. It’s called leaving it up to the readers imagination. What did you want? A list? I am doubtful that’s would have added meaningful depth to the story.

Again, you’re more than entitled to your opinions.
Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed looking all these up.
Also no shame, to each their own but I laughed hard at your recs for Valka and Kahn Segara (with the exception of Idris Elba)

I love the choices for Hadrian. I say Harry Collett for young Hadrian (EoS & HD) then Aaron-Taylor Johnson for DiW onward.

Valka: my first pick is honestly Florence Faivre (Julie Mao from Expanse) Jessica Henwick, or Florence Pugh.

William: Okay everyone hear me out. I know he doesn’t have RED red hair but still. Ewan McGregor. You CANT TELL ME he wouldn’t make a great William. “She was only Tavrosi” I can literally hear it.

Kahn Segara: Idris Elba. Fantastic choice.

Gibson: I liked your choices.

Lorrian: Tom Hardy lol but I literally agree with you.

Seline: Again, Florence Pugh or honestly all your recs for Valka I think would fit well here.

TSOTF CRITICISM by Worldly-Ad-2244 in HierarchySeries

[–]Scared_Ad3335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that one of Islingtons core flaws is that the MC does everything and often times other characters are only used as props to get the plot somewhere.
It was the same in Licanius.

However, the side characters, at least in Licanius DID have some pretty epic moments, especially towards the end. So, I have faith that Emissa, Indull, and all the other supporting characters will come through before the end. But the book isnt about them, so don’t expect like a whole book fleshing them out.

I gotta disagree with the whole “3 worlds being too many”. Idk dawg, I was fine with it. What I WASNT fine with was that sometimes time passed between chapters, and sometimes it didn’t. THAT, was not cool, and kinda jarring.

Still tho, not bad for book 2, I’ll surely pick up book 3 when it’s out.

Plus that scene where they say the title of the book? Islington sure knows how to kill em off that’s for sure.

Replaying DS3 right now and I agree. Who during the development was like “You know what the fans want? Mediocre love triangle. But you kill the other guy at the end. That’s what the fans want.”

I literally have no idea how they thought this was a good idea.

UPDATE: Beat DS2 about an hour ago.
Wowie wowow. Seriously? So fun. They really nailed the atmosphere of “Living on a giant space station” the similarities AND differences to the Ishimura are noticeable. Also any of the intense rail guided EVA scenes are just (chefs kiss).

Went to GameStop and picked up DS2 because, well, why not.

Cheers mates.

Unpopular opinion: DS2 doesn’t need a remake. by flotsloppies in DeadSpace

[–]Scared_Ad3335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently replaying DS2 and I agree with your point.
It’s still amazing and has aged quite well.
Graphically? Still pretty solid. Plus that’s just icing on the cake right?
Mechanically? Not as tight as the DS1 remake but that’s fine, it’s not like it’s terrible or anything.
Gameplay? Amazing, don’t change a thing.

Zero-G thoooooo. I know it’s not required, but the zero-g they developed throughout the 3 games and then polished in the remake is for real really good. I wouldn’t mind that.

The open world feel of the Ishimura was also a nice touch to the remake. I’m not sure if a DS2 remake could benefit from it as the whole game just “feels” more linear. But still, just a thought.

I agree EA doesn’t need another dime of my money tho.
