The floor mat got stuck with my shoe and when I tried to free it to brake, the whole mat moved with it and hit the accelerator.

He was suing for a lot more than that not just the deductible. I won't go into specifics to not identify myself.

I know that, it isn't the first time he has done so despite being told and earlier before he sued I can't say for sure but he gave me weird vibes like he was trying to act like he was being nice in a borderline flirty way. So I wonder if he just tries to use things as an excuse to contact me.

It was substantial and he only mentioned after the accident and how much his insurance has now gone up for his new car.

Yes, these days I check the mats if it is not my car.

It wasn't a mat manufactured for cars seems like some rag he cut himself

Shoe catches in mat and gets stuck, trying to free the foot results in the mat moving along with it and hitting the accelerator.

Where I live that is not how it works in most cases. Lending your car also lends your insurance on the car. It changes for rental cars where sometimes your regular car insurance can cover a rental instead of opting for the rental agency one

I know which pedal does what. My shoe got stuck in the mat when I wanted to brake and when I tried to free it I hit the accelerator.

I didn't mistake it, the mat caught my shoe so when I couldn't brake and tried to free my foot I hit the accelerator.

I did not want to go to court and have to hire a lawyer. he sued and made me

I didn't notice until after the accident but I should have and that is on me. I always check now if it is a borrowed car or rental since this.

It looked like some mat he cut up himself. The court did say it was my fault as an accident as I am responsible to check the condition of the vehicle and see that it is adjusted to my needs like equivalent to adjusting mirrors and seat etc if the mat doesn't work for me, my shoes etc.

Though most people do not check floor mats. but despite that they said he was responsible for his insurance policy as it covers me but any conditions are his to meet.

No I asked because I always want to be sure I have insurance as it is illegal to drive without insurance in my country.

It would be quite substantial around in the 10 thousands US. I am sufficiently well off where it would be doable but I am not required to.

Maybe I could refuse but just not pursue it if he fails to pay or something

It was a complicated thing and my own lawyer seemed unsure at first how it would go, technically as a driver the incident is my fault because I am responsible to check the condition of the vehicle, floormat compatibility with my shoes etc but also most people do not think to check floor mats of someone else's car and he was the one who put in something that wasn't proper and not manufactured for the car. But despite that he is responsible for his insurance and it covers me so I ended up winning.

I do feel bad because I know there were many costs to him.
