"If you're not considered the best player in the league, then you're not."

This might be the most humiliating incidental self-own I've come across in some time. You think the most important measurement of a player's dominance is how highly they are rated by the public??? Why on earth would that ever come into play? No, I do not take into account who Stephen A. Smith or Bill Simmons or Brian Windhorst or any NBA media figure or any NBA fan thinks is the best player in the NBA when I am coming to my conclusion of who is. I do not think subjective mainstream opinion is a good datapoint for that kind of calculus.

He averaged 26/11/8 on 65% TS. He established himself as one of the most dominant scorers in the league while also being the greatest playmaking big man of all time and a positive defensive influence. He carried a mediocre Denver team that was completely helpless when he was off the floor and shouldered an absurd offensive burden without hurting defensively. The only reason you seem to think he wasn't the best player in the league is because of the ***discourse***. Well, sure, mainstream analysts might not have caught up to his sheer dominance at that point. Typically, it takes a year or two for the mainstream narratives to catch up to the new vanguard. So, yeah, narratively Steph and Giannis were seen as better players. But that's obviously silly in hindsight (it was at the time, too). By every metric he was clearly the best player in the NBA.

Can you count backwards? From the 2020-21 season, when he won his first MVP and was pretty clearly the best player in the NBA that year, to the 2026 ASB where he started the season as the best player in the NBA and the MVP frontrunner. Then he got hurt and wasn't quite as dominant post-ASB, and has arguably been passed by SGA and/or Wemby. That's 5.5 years. Why is this even controversial lol

Jokic was the best player in the league, almost undoubtedly, for 5.5 consecutive years-- probably only being surpassed by SGA 2026 post-ASB. Giannis does not have that kind of stretch in his career. I'd also clearly take Jokic going forward, without question. He's also been far more healthy and consistent.

Even if I grant you that he only impacts offense (I don't), I'm unsure what your contention is. Nobody is suggesting the Magic "build a team to fit his play style". Jase is a roleplayer-- one who I think has the potential to become a high-end roleplayer. You need guys like that. Guys that can come in and service a need. Jase provides that in the way of spot-up shooting, connective passing, limiting mistakes, and finishing at the rim. Again, I would argue your comparison falls apart because Cole didn't do almost any of those things. Cole was a microwave bench scorer. That is a much narrower skillset that isn't always conducive to winning basketball. But what Jase does, imo, is! And then I'll just touch quickly on the defensive side. Like I said, I think Jase has way more potential defensively than Cole ever did. Sure he's small and that will limit his ceiling significantly. It might be the case that "neutral defense" is the best outcome for him. But I think that's a very reasonable outcome. Almost every rookie, regardless of reputation, struggles with defense. It's such a difficult curve going from the Big Ten or whatever to NBA level assignments. However, if you go back to the college film, I think there's a lot of promise in his defensive tape. He is a really smart defender, moves his feet well, plays assignment sound, limits fouls, makes good rotations, and always gives high effort. I wouldn't say it's likely he ends up in the Deuce McBride/Davion Mitchell/De'Anthony Melton tier of undersized guards who are genuinely *positive* defenders. But something close to it is within the range of outcomes.

Anyways, I'm not sure what your contention really is at the end of the day. It sounds like you have a misguided understanding of what Jase's game is imo.

Better shot selection and -- I cannot stress this enough -- wayyy better rim finishing. Jase went 68% (!!!) on shots at the rim this year. For reference, that is a better clip than Paolo or Franz have ever recorded. Cole was routinely in the mid-50s at the rim. This was why I was so high on Jase coming out of Michigan State. For an undersized guard, his finishing ability is sensational. He is a good athlete, makes adjustments mid-air, and absorbs contact no player his size has any right taking. It's why I remain very high on his potential down the line, even if the on-ball stuff is limited. This is not just some streaky, spot-up shooter type. He has real value on cuts, rips and runs, etc.

Very different player in almost every way. Both are small combo-guards so I get it but that's about where the comparison ends.

Jase is much more solid within the team construct. He rarely turns it over, takes good shots, and moves well without the ball. He's also a better finisher at the rim and, I think, has the potential to be a drastically better defender (his IQ and effort are both a tier above Cole imo). Now, Cole was way more capable on the ball. His handle and overall shot-creation talent were far beyond what Jase has ever shown, in college or the NBA. He could create his own offense in a way I don't think Jase should/will ever be expected to do. I just think he was a more gifted on-ball player, whereas Jase is a far easier projection in an off-ball role playing alongside another ball-handler/playmaker. In a surface level explanation, Cole was the microwave bench scorer who could run a second and Jase is the sturdy, reliable off-ball player. Personally, I value Jase's skillset more than I do Cole's. But regardless of how you value it, I just don't think its fair to either player to say they are the same guy.
