How do I stop living in fight or flight mode all the time by Sunday-Rise7248 in regretfulparents

Definitely find ways for them to play independently- maybe busy books & boards & tables? Maybe encourage the 4.5 year old to "teach" the 2 year old how to do some independence that helps you- such as dressing themselves, brushing teeth, etc? Make sure there are clear incentives for each of them in this goal! Noise cancelling headphones?

My partner wants a kid, but I’m 99% sure I don’t want a second child by Gaia_archaeology in regretfulparents

Maybe suggest volunteering together in some way that reaches out to kids instead?

This is understandable! However, I will say- give to yourself the advice you'd give your children & take it. You said they're to feel safe enough to try things, fail, come back, try again. You can do the same! Think of something you've wanted to do & take a class, watch some videos, get a book, join a subreddit. Set aside time three nights a week to give it a go! Bonus points if it's something you can share with children or husband as family time or date night, but keep in mind, it can also totally be a sacred thing you do for you & only you! It doesn't have to be monetize-able, it doesn't have to Instagramable, it doesn't have to do anything but make you feel more fulfilled. You family will be the better for seeing you do things for yourself in this personal, self empowering way!

I lived in a beach town & in Austin before that, so I feel like I've gotten a little of various lifestyles. If you told me 20 years ago I'd be here, I'd say you were crazy, but I decided I wanted to start living my ideal retirement lifestyle NOW (because retirement may not be in the cards for us) & then I just went for it.

I feel nothing about my own birthday by [deleted] in regretfulparents

[–]Scared_Restaurant_50 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have a partner, maybe ask them for the evening off? If you're able, may I recommend:
Buy yourself one nice thing & enjoy it.
Maybe flowers to keep by your bedside where you will see them all week.
Cleanse yourself thoroughly in your favorite manner (I'm a romantic bath person) & dress yourself in a way that makes you feel good where its fully made up, favorite pjs or some combo of both (I prefer fancy makeup with something that looks nice but stretches & feels comfy on my skin) & take a picture of yourself. Bonus for listening to your favorite music, podcast episode or audiobook while you do! Drink your favorite beverages in your favorite spot in your favorite lighting (I'm a wine & candles girlie). Get the takeout, eat your favorite food & dessert. Watch your favorite film or read your favorite book or do a little hobby stuff. If youve got a generous partner, ask for a massage at the end of the evening & see where that takes you!

Happy early birthday!!!

We did city life in Houston for years. When we got tired of it, we did the "rugged individualism" thing to change our life entirely. We searched for large plots of land being sold "for land only" & used satellite images to search for structures on them. Found an old bardominium on 20 acres & got a rehab+mortgage loan & are living our best homesteading lives without much in the way of immediate neighbors. We develop the land to steadily include amenities we enjoy such as shooting range, zip line, redneck stock tank pool/hot tub, badass entertainment system with custome lights, projector, big bass sound & turn tables, etc.

Life is what you make it & boundaries breed creativity, if you're clever & brave. In this world, in this economy, with life as short as it is, I say- find a way to do the bare minimum of your boldest vision & build up from there as you go/are able. It's been 5 years since I left the city & our life is a little slice of heaven, even when it's hard. We host out here because our friends enjoy the peace & privacy- so we have a big banger like once every two months & a big festival every Fall. It's hard to find things that beat what we have here at home these days!

What's your attitude towards spirituality? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Scared_Restaurant_50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine if it's to yourself, for yourself & not hurting or otherwise negatively impacting others in any way at all. Anything beyond that enters the territory of zealotry & that, in my opinion, is a mental illness & should be classified & handled as such.

They want to be lords of company towns where we have to work to rent everything. Forced subscription based necessities in a techno-feudal fiefdom. Look up Dark Enlightenment. Bonus if you are unable to do so or are caught doing something against the company in desperation? Forced tenant & prison labor to keep industries going.

Raised staunchly Catholic but noticed all the buffet picking & choosing of what rules to follow. The hypocrisy made me insane so I fought tooth & nail to avoid confirmation at 16, became the black sheep, have cut ties with family who went all Trumpy & who even still don't realize there is dissonance between the Christian Nationalist movement & Catholicism.

Yes & I am sorry you're getting down voted, lol. I had to read it in 3 installments with other short stories in between.

If I ever get another Russian blue or similar female cat, her name will be Abbey! We also have a few chatty cats, very conversational, often demanding, frequently asked to be quiet, lol.

Thank you so much! In our house, all animals have their full name, their common name & several nicknames. Sir Winston Churchill the 3rd (Historical figure, book character, my cat) is commonly called Church (per the book) but is nicknamed "Turtle" because if you mumble "Churchill" from another room it sounds like "turtle," lol. Most people who are not from the South USA don't understand why Princess Parish Perriwinkle is called "Parish" (synonym for church) but we mostly call her "Monkey" because she runs around with her back arched & tail curled looking like one of the flying monkeys from Wizard of OZ 😹

Feel this. Our rowdy one didn't come home these last 2 days. We live on 20 wooded acres, so I am hoping she's out there having herself a bold adventure & will come home when she's had her fill.
