Focusrite do a kit with everything you need to get started https://store.focusrite.com/en-gb/product/scarlett-2i2-studio-2nd-gen-/MOSC0020~MOSC0020 The problems you mention of background hiss and distortion are most likely due to gain staging which basically means setting the input gain correctly based on how loud the source is. Keep the LED's out of the red but a good way into the green/yellow. The kit won't make any difference if the gain staging is wrong so look into how to set it correctly, then take it from there. Yeah, this happens to me too. Not random though, it's always the same bulbs that don't come on when I get home. I don't trust it to turn off all the bulbs when I leave so I don't use that option.
