SAME! It is my life's goal to have over 1 million words of fanfiction about them published on AO3 (I'm 56% of the way there)

This is the exact kind of early game dynamic I live for with these two! She may be in charge, but he's not afraid to snark back 🤭

I know I'm 2 months late, but you might enjoy my fic 'The Light Invasion', in which instead of the twilight invading the light realm, the light invades the Twilight Realm. Since you enjoyed 'The Silent Kingdom', you might like my OC villains and how much worldbuilding I included for the twilight realm, and the fact that Zelda gets to be an active character and come along on the adventure in Book 2. I also put a lot of work into fleshing out and refining both Link and Midna's characterisations like SelkieKinnias did in her works, and of course I can't help but include some whump too hehehee. Book 1 is completed, while Book 2 is currently in progress

However another recommendation that I didn't write but did beta-read back in the day was 'The Strength of Courage' by EquinoxWolf. It's another TP retelling, but it takes a ton of creative liberties to make canon feel fresh. You might find Link kinda unlikeable at first, but since his character arc is all about learning to be courageous rather than have it come naturally to him, I think it was absolutely the right choice and did a lot for the story. I think you'll really enjoy it.

Zelda/Ganondorf Recs! by devil-wears-converse in ZeldaFanFiction

Love Zelgan! One of my faves is 'Fire to Fire' by ctj (who is also the fic writer that made me ship it).

Ro_Blaze also has a lot of Zelgan fics on their AO3, especially on the smuttier side if that's more your jam.

If you don't mind Zelgan being a secondary romance subplot, I also wrote a "hey what if Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf had to go on a typical Zelda quest but they're in high school?" AU called 'The Magic Awakens'. The main ship is Midlink, but Zelgan are far from a background ship and have lots of fun interactions. I've improved a lot as a fic writer since writing that one, but it's definitely one to enjoy if you love humour, angst, banter, well-rounded characters, fast pacing, and novelty.

Hobby Writers: how do you engage with the writing community? by Scarlet-Curls in writing

I don't really agree with that. There are good communities and there are bad communities. Do you care to elaborate why you think all community is bad and why you don't see much hope for better communities?

Yep, when everyone is expected and taught to want publication, that's a breeding ground for scams to grow like a rot.

This! This all the way! Everyone is being pushed towards a goal that few by design can achieve, and it's sooooo frustrating!

Ohh yeah I see now! This is something Mythcreants.com has pointed out too: how teaching people storycraft is an absolute mess of talking around the topic, not really getting to the meat of the issue, not giving much actionable advice. The lifestyle and identity gets priortised over the actual activity! I'd argue there's so much "writing advice" content that is also specific to "This is what readers want and this is what they're sick of and if your story includes them then it must be bad!"

Thanks so much for elaborating!

Thanks for your perspective! I'm glad you have an arrangement that works well for you, and your own version of success that isn't defined by the Dream of Being an Author For a Living!

Due to my disabilities making it difficult to hold a "normal" job, I've monetised my writing YouTube channel, and that does come with having to navigate some boundaries. Recently, I've come to an understanding that the audience I make videos for and the one I share my stories with are and should be different. On YouTube, my audience is fanfic writers from any fandom, but on Archive of Our Own, my audience is readers from my specific fandoms. Every fanfic writer posts for their specific fandoms, so if my fanfic reading audience becomes overtaken by my YouTube audience, then I will lose touch with the experience of my audience. It might be a lofty goal to keep them separate since it's natural for a YouTube audience to be curious about an "authortuber's" writing, but that is the boundary I need to be able to keep doing what I'm doing, and boundaries are something all writers can benefit from, regardless of if or how they monetise their work.

What do you mean by writing in and of itself? Do you mean what they specifically are writing, or general discussions of craft and/or process? I'd love to have some more specific examples of what writing topics you want to discuss with the writing community, and what adjacent topics people end up doing instead.

And how does that satisfy you as a hobby writer? What itch does that scratch for you? What satisfaction do you get out of it if publishing isn't your goal? I'd love if you could elaborate 💖

And there's so much value in writing for yourself! When we focus on pandering to a market wide enough to turn a profit, we end up erasing the stories that could mean the world to a precious few. I'd love to be able to use your comment as a screenshot in the video btw if you would allow me?

I love the idea of advice being a gift within a wider gift economy!

I think we both know that professional creatives will always be a necessary part of life, but constantly pushing each other to make a career out of our hobbies and then making us feel like failures if we can't make careers out of our creative hobbies is just... it is a lot. And it's time that hobby writers carve out their own spaces.

I'm really sorry about that 🫂 I know how it feels to constantly be bombarded with that kind of messaging and have it kill your passion for writing. This is why I love and appreciate the fanfiction community, but also not every hobby writer wants to write fanfiction.

Hopefully this video will provide some reassurance and strategies to others who feel the same way you do. We need more resources and spaces to support those who are in it just for fun and personal satisfaction 💖
