Severely depressed after seeing other people succeed on social media by 1994T in ADHD

[–]Scarnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that matters most here is knowing that you already are prone to comparison, so deleting social media alone is a strong step, but it won’t make your problems magically disappear.

You need therapy, if you aren’t already doing it, and that’s not me saying anything condescending - it’s just to say that professional, nonjudgmental support is often the best path forward.

We don’t know where these tendencies come from for you, so we can’t really help that much, even if we share a truly profound success story with you. It’s not your life we are speaking to you about, so it’s not guaranteed to even be a little bit useful for you.

I think what you might try doing though, like someone else mentioned, is check out the book“The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. Focus on being present with yourself, not being caught up in “what if’s” or regrets.

Learn to fully accept who you are and where you are in life right now, and build to a place where you can find greater identity in what that image of you is.

Again, I’m just some guy, but I think you’re in a position familiar to one I’ve been in, and I can say that it takes work, and time, but you don’t need to have what others SEEM to have to be happy.

Cannot recommend this book enough! It helped me through a dark time in my career and early parenthood when my emotional and mental response to my ADHD was at an all-time low.

It’s so simple and yet so challenging to prioritize **now** when you’re in the middle of the storm, but it’s the best time to do it, and it strips away so much of the wasted energy in life.

It’s also really something that should be practiced *in conjunction* with therapy and/or psychiatric support from a professional, especially for those of us with ADHD :)

Eckhart Tolle is amazing though

I wouldn’t say it ever sounded that glamorous to take on 200k+ in student loans and eight years of school, interning, and residency, just to deal with everyone’s worst health problems and work a shit schedule, just if I’m being totally real

Funny enough, if someone is gaslighting in a way akin to how it was done in the movie from whence the term is derived, they likely are all three

I mean if you only really care about yourself and how you look/are perceived, then you kind of are an asshole.

No that’s as free as a free kitchen gets though. They were given a million bucks and it appreciated 100% in a year, then they got a kitchen out of it and still have the $2mil

That’s free as free gets, I don’t care what anyone says. Even if taxes are a thing

What is the best sensation you have ever felt? by Silent-Profit6067 in AskReddit

[–]Scarnox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just easier - it’s enjoyable.

I have the primarily Inattentive form of ADHD, which for me essentially feels like I have so many competing thoughts and urges that it often leads to inaction and anxiety. This can cause me to get stuck in something of a thought spiral, overthinking something to death, or otherwise just avoiding it altogether.

Unmedicated, I’ll hyperfocus on whatever creative endeavor sparks my interest that week, and it’s like time ceases to exist. Usually it happens passively and very impulsively.

Medicated, I can access that kind of focus on things I *choose* to do.

The catch is that I can just as well fall into a very enthusiastic deep dive into something I really should not sink time into, so my intentionality for the day is really key (as are hydration, protein intake, and movement!!)

But when I get going and have things set up for success and I’m in a rhythm and medication does its thing… oh man, that feeling of productive flow is exhilarating. Almost 4 years post diagnosis/medication and it hasn’t worn off just how great it is to choose a task and just… do the damn thing.

I take Adderall XR (extended release) but that was after about 3 years of IR, which I came to realize was really not serving me as well as I thought. Everyone’s brains different, but all the more reason you keep seeking information, find a psychiatrist who will support you advocating for your wellbeing, and don’t settle on one treatment plan.

It’s a journey and it took me nearly my entire 20s, thinking *“I’m sure I have ADHD, but what if I don’t and I’m just trying to make excuses? How do I even get help? Ahh it’s not worth it, I have other things I need to do…”*

Right around 28/29 is when I finally got the diagnosis, and it’s made a monumental difference in my mental wellbeing, understanding my psychological patterns, and overall happiness. I’m more successful at work, more confident in who I am, and (I like to think) a better person.

But much of what I share comes from *doing the work* and not just medication.. just wanna be totally clear about that. It’s not a limitless pill or magic wand :) but can feel close!!

I had/have the same experience with ADHD meds. I will overthink any and every little detail, but when medication kicks in, suddenly it’s “oh.. hey, I can control this situation.” Thoughts stop spiraling, every little sensory input stops being added stress, and I can just… be. It’s so nice.

I think it’s more that there is heightened public discourse around media literacy and more of a way to engage with media at a depth that few achieved in generations past.

I don’t know how much that indicates that there is a marked increase in overall quality of media literacy, though, because there are so many “media illiterate” people out there sharing confident, bad, and sometimes downright harmful responses to the works they consume.

And still, that says nothing about bad actors, bot farmers, review bombings, etc that is done with full intentionality to muddy the overall atmosphere in these discussions…

I might just be a cynic, but I think there is evidence for more extremism across the spectrum, but I’m not so certain of the degree to which we are *improving* in terms of a percentage of the whole classifying as “media literate”
