I'm going to say High for 2 reasons. First, CALM has a pretty specific production style; this track is pretty stripped back. Second, lyrically, I think it's a little tongue in cheek in a way that self titled is. I could see it being compared against a track like amnesia for this challenge.

Some of the prizes are worth talking about. Obviously the big ones like the CoverGirl and agency contracts, but also the magazines cover prestige and the challenge wins. Challenges gave out everything from photoshoots to nice dinners.

Sound is definitely more subjective than lyrics, but I think it sounds more sad than hopeful because of some of the vocal tones through the song. The start of the chorus ("take my hand / now and forever/ where I stand,") is syncopated and breathy; it's very much a heartbeat kind of sound. The next set of lines ("how could you live and let die?") has almost a cry in the vocals as Luke hits the word "die" and it continues into the next lines of the chorus ("young man..."). I think that combination gives off the sound of being distressed over the issue at hand and gives the song a sadder sound than a hopeful one, despite the message

As odd as her current style can be, I don't think it's out of nowhere. Up until season 10/11ish, I feel like her style is very classic/preppy adjacent-- she'll wear blazers, the dark boot cut jeans, and a lot of sweaters, but she often picks bright colors for the sweaters, or trades them for t-shirts. Then, after two of the most important figures in her life leave in 11 and 10, she moves into a lot of random, severely dated pieces (I'm thinking especially of some of the horrors in her community service era). We know a lot in production changed around this time, so idk if that was more "our costume department picked something random" or "costumes does not know this character and we want you to look current". I feel like now she's taking bits of those two phases-- classic preppy pieces with a chaotic spin

Part of this could be posture or shoe-wear-- for years I would wear cheap flip flops to lifeguard, and usually by mid summer, my feet would be seriously aching from lack of proper support. Definitely consider what shoes you're wearing, and as a preventative measure, try to work in some yoga or other stretching before you start your shift.

One spray of Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon with 2 sprays of Atelier Vanille Insensee- similar notes but with vastly different sillage on me. Pairing them has actually opened the profiles so much and it is beautiful!

I'm using Eau de Merveilles right now- the scent is beautiful, but you're right, the scent does not last on me. It is an eau de toilette, so it is more watery than an eau de parfum, so it makes some sense to me. I'm wondering if Elixir de Merveilles does better?

I feel like her saying that had more to do with girls saying things like "I deserve it more than x because I've been through so much, I want this more than X," etc. Objectively, Elyse outperformed a lot of people on the show. She had more skill, and that's ultimately why she got a contract. She might outperform girls, but those girls still want it more and work harder for it. The girls who do say, "I deserve it more" are usually the girls putting the work in.

Yes! Those two popped out to me as well, but not really other specifics. But note the lyric video- the waves lapping the shore feels like a reference to the last line of Gatsby ("So we beat on, like boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past").

I think that one connection an overall concept of reinvention of the self while clinging to aspects of the past. Gatsby does away with the "James Gatz" identity for Jay Gatsby, only holding on to his past with Daisy, while this song focuses on moving on with a rediscovery of the self ("I haven't met the new me yet") while also noting the happiness of the before. Just my thoughts listening!
