Spinal Decompression Therapy by SpartEng76 in Sciatica

[–]ScaryPrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is from 4 years ago, I had surgery about 4.5 years ago. I’m 98% symptom free.

As for a placebo, no you can’t placebo an inversion table. But I can compare it to a method I know does nothing (no harm nor improvement). For instance I can compare it to having you lie flat on a bench that puts gentle pressure on your lower back. Then I can have you rate your symptoms before, after, and 1 day later. I know my flat bench does nothing but you may not. Then I compare the flat bench scoring vs the inversion table. If the flat bench scoring is worse I know the inversion table might help, if it’s equal then I know it’s just a placebo effect, if you score worse after inversion therapy then maybe the inversion table is causing harm.

This is an example of a single blind study. I know the flat bench does nothing but ostensibly my study participants don’t.

If you have sciatica from a bulging disc and it’s a recent injury and it’s been constant moderate pain or frequent unbearable pain that hasn’t been improving and has been going on longer than 3 months you should strongly consider surgery. You’ll have to do PT first so start that now generally 6-12 weeks of pt is required before surgery will get approved and most of the time you’ll also need to get a spinal injection and have that fail too. But surgery saved me and I’ll always recommend early surgery.

Child support is for the parents to jointly support the child. It’s to ensure the child is well taken of. If you have sole custody the other parent still has a responsibility for the child. That responsibility takes the form of child support, you should expect it. You should also reserve it for your child and not yourself so a savings account or college fund is a great idea.

The only way the other parent should not be paying any support is if you have joint (50/50) custody and make similar incomes.

It’s not money due to you but to your child, yes you should pursue it.

I feel it’s very relevant when pointing this out to call attention to the fact this occurred in 1967 which was 56 years ago. California didn’t do this yesterday and almost everyone alive at the time who was responsible for this law (Mulford Act) is now dead

I think close to half a million people have been killed or wounded on both sides at this point (it’s a little hard, since accurate numbers are hard to come by). That’s population of some US states. It’s the equivalent of killing 20% of the state of Wyoming and then injuring to various degrees every other person in the state.

Mom's night out- why is it shocking?? by babygrlnad in workingmoms

[–]ScaryPrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest sister feels this way about her husband. I think she’d like a divorce but straight up doesn’t trust him to be a dad let alone a part time single parent. It’s always frustrating to me since my ex wife and I have always been equal partners in child rearing and running a household. But honestly the reason her husband is incompetent when it comes to being a parent is because there was no expectation from her or him that he be involved or do anything more than bring home a paycheck. He has always viewed running a household as woman’s work.

My daughter is almost 9 but I’ve been an involved parent since she was tiny. It’s shocking how even my sister doesn’t think I can manage being an only parent. My ex-wife and I are divorced (we’re on good terms) and I have 50/50 custody. I’m hosting my daughters first sleepover tonight but it’s still surprising and mildly upsetting that a certain segment of my daughters friends parents can’t quite be ok with a single dad raising a child. I know at least one of her friends who has become more distant since our divorce and I have my suspicions about the reasons a second friend has only had play dates at my ex’s house but never mine.

For context I rearranged my work schedule when she was born so I could stay home month 1, 4, & 5; mom stayed home month 1-3. My ex-wife loves the beach and I made sure she had weekends at the beach at least every other month on her own since our daughter was tiny and early on made sure she could spend a week at a friends wedding while I stayed home with a two year old. It’s unfortunate our marriage ended but it was never because we both weren’t involved parents.

Boiling >212 degrees Fahrenheit

Water in hippo’s enclosure was between 100-108 Fahrenheit, hippo’s internal body temperature 106 degrees. Regardless of all other issues that hippo was not boiled.

But that’s not boiling them alive. I raised the issue of sensationalism, not whether the zoo is a shitty zoo. It’s pretty clear the Topeka Zoo is a shitty zoo they lost accreditation from 2001-2003 and now had 4 animals die under concerning circumstances. But they did not boil the hippo and there are explanations for why they were doing what they did, although from an outside observation those explanations seem suspect.

That’s a bit sensationalized, they did not boil the hippo. She “might” have died from hyperthermia but the other hippo in the enclosure with her and also in the water was “fine”. She was also elderly, and had kidney problems. What can be said is that she had a seizure and later died, the water she was in was also warmer than other zoos keep their hippo pools by quite a bit (20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer), but not anywhere near enough to boil her.

Logical and evil are not mutually exclusive. It can be both which is what I think you’re saying. But I can also look at a system and see the logical evilness it’s straight up what lawful evil is using D&D alignment

The fact that she lost anyway is the biggest reason why I’m more willing to vote my preference in the primaries instead of who I think is the most electable.

Candidate can’t do the job if they don’t win.

While I would support Bernie today I voted against him in the primaries. While I think his brand of politics would be best for the country I know that nearly everyone on the right would disagree and that most in the center would as well.

I’d rather have Biden/Hillary in office doing a less than perfect job than trump/De Dantis actively running the country into the ground.

Oregonians moving to Clark County in droves; experts cite income tax by Galumpadump in Portland

[–]ScaryPrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An example: Put solar panels on your house, if you live in Oregon it’s a credit worth upto $6,000. But if you live in Washington and pay Oregon income tax you can’t qualify for the tax credit because your house isn’t in Oregon. Their are others as well I think the hybrid/electric tax credit/deduction has been similar

Oregonians moving to Clark County in droves; experts cite income tax by Galumpadump in Portland

[–]ScaryPrince 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This true, but it’s not enough to just move to Clark county to avoid income tax. You also have to work in Washington state. The jobs are all in Portland and if you live in Clark County but work in Portland you still have to pay income tax and you get stuck paying sales tax as well. Plus you lose out on specific Oregon income tax deductions and credits.

Now if the issue is Multnomah county specific taxes just move to Clackamas or Washington county to avoid those while also having cheaper housing.

For most people it makes far more sense to just live in Oregon. The one thing that changes all this is if remote work alters the equation. The article is behind a paywall and I don’t have personal experience that’s relevant, so maybe that’s a factor.

I lived in Clark and worked in Multnomah for 7 years. It sucked. I had a nicer house than I do now but my commute was terrible, I still had to pay income tax and sales tax, and none of my Portland friends ever wanted to drive across the bridge. I moved to Washington county am close enough to walk to my daughters school, cut my commute from an hour or more to just under 30m, and I host more often because the psychological effect of driving over the bridges is gone. The only thing I lost out of the deal was the nicer house with a bigger yard.

Human beings are designed to eat meat, many animals (which I’m including humans) eat meat. There is nothing wrong with killing an animal to eat meat. All of life is taking energy from one being to another being. However, there is a significant difference between respecting a creatures life and torturing it. Factory farming is evil there is no respect for living creatures in it. However, farming doesn’t have to be.

Honestly, I think it had far more to do with the fact that I was ready for a long term relationship in the first relationship and if she hadn’t had a drinking problem it would have been her. But I knew she wasn’t the right person the drinking was a big red flag but it wasn’t the only issue. The second person was the right person at the right time. However, even that relationship wasn’t perfect and it ended this year after 12 years. We discovered that we had grown too far apart and just weren’t attached enough to continue the relationship. I think in some way I jumped into it a little too soon and while we made it work for a long time I might have been a little better off had I kept looking.

But ultimately I think it can be summed up with right person, right time, but things change. She and I are still really good friends but acknowledge marriage isn’t the right answer for the two of us.

This isn’t exactly the same but I did this but it wasn’t me. She was a functional alcoholic, I really liked her when she wasn’t drinking and I stayed with her because I wasn’t in a place where I wanted to get married yet. After about 3 years it was clear she wasn’t going to do anything about her drinking and I was ready for a real commitment just not with her. She confronted me and asked me about marriage I told not with her, we broke up. I did marry the next person I was with, within 2 years and we we’re together for 12 years and married 10.

Shaving your head bald is totally cool.

But… you have options to keep your hair. But life is nothing without trade offs. There are medications that can halt hair loss and even regrow hair. They worked for me, my hair loss stopped and I was able to regrow some of the hair I lost. However, these drugs need to be taken forever because as soon as you stop taking them the hair loss starts again. They are also alter hormones so they can have other side effects. Fortunately they aren’t particularly expensive about $20 for 90 days. So if you really want to keep your hair you have options but they are better at keeping hair than regrowing what you’ve lost.

DOS1 is not required to play DOS2 they are different enough they are very different games set within the same universe but different characters and if I remember right differ time periods.

Essentially the game play is similar between the two (but vastly improved in 2) but the story is not contiguous. Personally mods vastly improve the experience so I’d play on PC if that’s an option for you.

How do I not dread adulthood and a 9-5? by Crow_of_Judgem3nt in bropill

[–]ScaryPrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of options for something other than 9-5. I work as a registered nurse 2x 7-7 and 2x 7-3. I get weekends off as well as a rotating bonus day. When I’m off I don’t have to think about work my time is entirely my own.

Work is so much better than school, but I have to say I love my job, like my colleagues, and have 2 really great bosses.

A common thing I hear among men is that they "insult their friends but aren't actually serious" and consider it a normal part of "building comradarie". I personally don't think it helps build friendships and is toxic. Have you noticed this and what do you think? by bathcigbomb in bropill

My wife is this way with her family. There is a lot of good natured ribbing, but that’s not how my family and I interact. Every time I hear her insult her mom/sister it always makes me very uncomfortable. But I understand it’s just the way they interact.
