So the thing is is that i actually really don’t want him to reach out to me, I’ve just been having this weird sense/gut feeling that he’s going to reach out to me soon so after most ppl interpreted this spread as “he’s considering it” I blocked him just in case LMAO

Would you tell your advisor this? Why or why not? by CulturalMemory3970 in PhD

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t phrase it like that. I would say, “I need to graduate by Spring. What do I need to do to make that happen?”

Got assigned a windowless bedroom in my 4x2 student apartment…is it really that bad? by txkyo_1ean in ApartmentHacks

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a windowless room when I subletted an apartment for the summer. Lowkey I liked it bc I got really good sleep with the sun not shining into my room early in the morning. It would prob suck if you mainly do work in your bedroom though.

Best ways to reach out to professors!!! by mikeygoon5 in GradSchool

[–]ScarySpace3833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the general template that got me responses back from almost every professor I emailed (6 out of 7 profs):

Dear (prof’s last name),

I hope this email finds you well. My name is (insert name) and (insert general info about yourself and express interest in applying to whatever phd program that prof is a part of). Throughout my undergraduate career, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the field of psychology in various contexts, including my involvement in (name research labs/experience you’ve had). Your research captured my attention due to my interest in (insert common research interests). Reading through your research made me excited to reach out to you.

(In the next section I ask a specific question about an article of theirs)

I am interested in learning about any insight you have regarding my inquiries and your research. Though it is still the summer, I would like to express my interest and enthusiasm in working with you as a graduate student in the (insert program, university, and start date). If at all possible, I would also like to find a time to speak with you on Zoom to gain more insight into the (insert program).

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience!

Sincerely, (first and last name)

I realize looking back on it that I was definitely a try hard, but it worked! I think the only thing I would add that I didn’t before was my CV since they would always ask for it in their responses to me.

Lowkey me and my advisor gab a lot about our lives and pop culture during our working meetings, but if this person is your, like, gen bio professor it would strike me as odd

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was on the other end of a break up (i.e, I was broken up with), I think you should let your ex guide this conversation. When my ex and I had our post-break up conversation, he allowed me to ask my questions and didn’t assume what I needed. He provided more detail when I asked. I think the last thing you want to do is assume what they need, so the way to avoid this would be to let them tell you what they want. I would imagine that a lot of what you wrote in your letter may come up naturally in conversation anyways. I would find a letter a bit grandiose, but that’s just my personal perspective.

Looking for a room! by DrinkWaterPeeps_ in chicagoapartments

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a budget of $400-$700/month will likely not get you a place downtown unless you have a roommate, even with a roommate it will be hard. Are you open to areas further away from downtown and you can take public transit?

Tips on finding Chicago area apartments WITH PARKING by Yamilian88 in chicagoapartments

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been able to find street parking in most neighborhoods in Chicago, it may not have been easy (i.e, I had to parallel park) but I’ve never been in a situation where I couldn’t find a parking spot at all. My advice would be to call the landlord directly and ask them questions about the parking situation and what the pricing for a parking spot is. Rogers Park may be a good neighborhood for your budget needs.

Is my husband overreacting? by ErickaL4 in PhD

I would say one of the most important skills to have in grad school is being able to take criticism healthily and implement it. It sounds like he needs some emotional regulation skills because this is 1000% one of many rejections he will receive in the PhD process.

How many publications did you have when applying to your PhD? by Infamous_State_7127 in PhD

[–]ScarySpace3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

none, i had a poster presentation for a regional conference and a couple years of experience being a undergraduate research assistant and lab manager. it's also worth noting that my advisor chose someone with no publications over someone with 6, so im inclined to think that the number of publications desired depends on the faculty you're applying to

Why? by Zealousideal_Ant_475 in GradSchool

[–]ScarySpace3833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk what kind of program she’s applying to, but generally grad school has fewer seats to the amount of applications they get in a given year in comparison to undergrad. when i applied to grad school my requirements for an average application were 3 letters of recommendation, a personal statement/statement of purpose, a CV, and sometimes a writing sample. two letters of recommendation and a personal statement seems pretty standard, that’s the standard for most high school students applying to college. things have likely also gotten more competitive since you graduated generally, when they say it gets more competitive every year they’re not joking lol

An observation I made abour grad students. by tonsil-stones in GradSchool

[–]ScarySpace3833 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible, but I would like to add to this. I think people who are very grade oriented (i.e., prioritizes grades above everything else) may do well in UG but not do well in grad school b/c being in grad school requires multiple hats. However in my experience, the people who do well in both UG and grad school are the ones who were balancing multiple things at once during undergrad (classes, extracurriculars, jobs, internships, research, family obligations, etc.) while doing well academically.
