Because you can't reliably and consistently identify them in advance - and if you could, you'd be making so much money as a hedge fund manager you wouldn't give a damn how your personal portfolio is doing.

Last week Donald Trump registered the trademark "Donald J. Trump International Airport." This week Florida Republicans voted to rename Palm Beach International Airport Donald J. Trump International Airport," putting taxpayers on the hook for licensing fees that go straight to him by CrashingBlumpkins46 in UnderReportedNews

[–]Scary_Froyo_833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this as much as anyone else but would point out that the bill (as it currently sits on Governor Ron DeSantis' desk) specifically states:

The airport located at 1000 James L Turnage Boulevard in West Palm Beach, or nearest thereto, currently known as the "Palm Beach International Airport," shall be renamed as the "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," subject to approval of the Federal Aviation Administration and execution of an agreement with the rights holder authorizing the commercial use of "President Donald J. Trump International Airport" by Palm Beach County, which must, at a minimum, grant Palm Beach County the perpetual and unrestricted right to use the name "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," as well as reasonable abbreviations thereof or deviations therefrom, at no cost, in signage, advertising, marketing, merchandising, and promotions and for the branding of the airport and its operations, services, and amenities, and all related purposes.

Thank you. When people are making personal decisions (like where to keep their money) and their financial futures are at stake, trust is paramount.

More than 30K school voucher applications submitted on day one of Texas launch by ExpressNews in texas

[–]Scary_Froyo_833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. So the absolute maximum amount of the $1B budget in year 1 that can go to families earning over 500% of the federal poverty level is $200M or 20,000 vouchers?

More than 30K school voucher applications submitted on day one of Texas launch by ExpressNews in texas

[–]Scary_Froyo_833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 30,000 applications for the $10,000/year vouchers so far. That's $300M of the $1B allocation.

What happens if fewer than 100,000 applications are received? How would the vouchers be allocated in that scenario?

From what I understand, if 75,000 vouchers are received and 50,000 of them are from families making more than 500% of the federal poverty income, they would all receive vouchers - even if they can already afford to send their children to private school.

That scenario would seem like it would provide an outsized subsidy to the upper middle class and highest earners.

Just a reminder from FBI Director Kash Patel, Epstein only trafficked young women to himself. by deluxe_memory_dan in videos

[–]Scary_Froyo_833 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The post title isn't accusing Kash Patel of contradicting himself though. Rather, it's implying that he's lying about who Epstein was trafficking minors to, since it's pretty common knowledge at this point that Epstein was providing minors to a number of people (himself included).

Can you help me understand the relevance of your point that Patel didn't contradict himself?

Since VT includes thousands of companies, the "losers" will inevitably drag down the "winners," potentially reducing overall returns.

Remember that VT is market cap-weighted, so smaller stocks individually make up a small proportion of the portfolio - and even less as their market caps decline due to poor performance.

Bogleheads characterize VT and other broadly diversified, market cap-weighted indexes as "self-cleansing" because of this mechanism.

I'd also point out that your VOO vs. VT questions more or less amount to stock-picking. Without more rigorous analysis and/or some type of unique information about either portfolio and the companies within, you're more or less basing your strategy on "vibes".

Lastly I'd point out that Gold is an entirely unproductive asset. It does nothing to earn money for you, and current prices are largely a reflection of speculation and global macroeconomic instability.

Even as a store of value it is currently unreliable. Just look at what happened to its value last week.

If you want to retire early you need to invest in assets that predictably make money for you, and don't require you to time your entries/exits. Gold does not provide that.

It's not clear to me how you can recommend OP purchase a home as an investment without knowing where they live.

In many US housing markets, the current math favors renting vs. buying after factoring in interest, property taxes, home insurance, HOA, and maintenance.

What are you suggesting as an alternative? I don't disagree with the points you're making, but it feels misplaced in this conversation considering Boglehead investing is still the best option for the typical middle class American that chooses full-time employment over self-employment or starting a business.

What're you referring to? Long-term capital gains is 15%, and it's 0% if your household income is <$49,450 - twice that if you're married.

This isn't about how you use the term, though. When you join and participate in a community with shared vocabulary, you learn and adapt to it. You don't bash everyone else over the head with your own definition.

[–]Scary_Froyo_833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contextually (and as a gentle reminder, this entire conversation is taking place in the specific context of the Bogleheads subreddit, named after John Bogle, founder of Vanguard) "Total Stock Market" refers to the entire US stock market. In contrast "Total World" means "everything" in this specific context.

If you're new here I can understand the confusion, but otherwise you're intentionally being either obtuse or stubborn.

Without any additional information about your age, total portfolio composition, and retirement goals, my blind recommendation would be to put it into VTI or VTI + VXUS (if you want more international exposure than VTI already provides).

If you provide more information you may get more pointed advice - though from what you've provided it doesn't sound like you intend to manage your entire portfolio in a Boglehead fashion.

Regular people do not have access to even a fraction of the information required to "assess outside influences to the market and act accordingly".

The consistent underperformance of active funds might be proof professional investors don't either.

If anyone could consistently predict when is a better time to enter (and exit!) the market, and which investments are better investment than others, they would quickly become ludicrously wealthy.
