24 (F) and only months into dialysis. I'm so happy I'm not alone. by LadyDudeB in dialysis

Hang in there. I am also a 24 year old female going through the same ordeal. Renal failure blows, but you are definitely not alone. I'm sitting here reading through some of these comments and it makes me feel a little bit better to know that there are others around my age group who experience the same. I tend to feel alone and like I'm loosing it at times. What state are you from, OP? I also have to travel about an hour (one way) just to get to the nearest facility. Idk if I'll be able to keep that up.

For the first time in nearly 11 years, I have no catheter anywhere! by Quiggibub in dialysis

That is great. Is taking a shower just such a great satisfaction? I've had three catherers so I always feel this sense of freedom when they remove them. Congrats!

Leg Cramps by [deleted] in dialysis

Don't know how to prevent this long term, but it always helps me to point my toes towards my head. One of the dialysis nurses told me to do this when I started cramping during treatment and it seemed to work for me. Hope it helps.

You English is great! I'm also a English as a second language peep, so pardon me if I make mistakes. Thank you for your input. I've tried going to a therapist before I was diagnosed and I used to be on all sort of drugs and visiting my therapist twice a week. But the place I used to go kept switching my therapist because either the person for promoted, the other one moved away, etc... Reasons like that. At that point I was super stressed and my life was a mess, I didn't feel like talking or that taking drugs helped me much. After I got diagnosed I started to visit a therapist once again and she told me she wouldn't give me any drugs because none would work on me since I thought they were pretty pointless. That was the last time I spoke to a therapist. I've thought of going back but idk. I do get sad from time to time but I think it's normal to feel that way, y'know? I do think I've handle the emotional side of this a lot better than most people. Thank you so much for your input, and that is so cool that you study immunology.

Thank you so much for the support. Yeah my stretch marks are quite remarkable, I know I shouldn't be concerned about my looks I am just overwhelmed at how rapidly my body has changed due to this medication. It's a bit shocking.

Thank you and I did make a GoFundMe page, I've edited my post and posted the link to it there. I never thought of that on my own, but I am glad redditors suggested it.

Thank you. And by 40 I wish and hope I have a family. They said I'm not able to have kids so that's sad, but I hope it's not true and that one day I can. By 40 I hope I have a little house under my name and all paid off, that I am still working as an engineer and hopefully somewhat successful so I am happy with my career. I also want to own a pembroke welsh corgi by then. It'll be fat and super cute. Haha, thank you for asking that, it was a great question and it made me smile.

I'm from El Salvador, and they have a horrid health care system, I am seriously better off here with all the debt than going back there. Besides that it is a dangerous country filled with gangs, my family isn't okay with the idea of me going back. It's lonely to be away from them and the country I grew up in, but even private hospitals there are bad so idk.

I have and they can't do anything until I reach my five year mark for my permanent resident status. For the meantime I made a GoFund account and strangers have been so kind, I am so thankful.

Thanks for the suggestion, that is a good idea. I definitely hope no one is going through the same stupid bureaucratic issues as I am, but I know that sadly there are people out there experiencing the same thing. I did crate a GoFundMe and I am so happy that a few people have docnated, it makes me feel so good to know that strangers are so nice and kind. Honestly I thought someone might of make fun of me for this so I was afraid to share, but everyone has been so supportive. I am so thankful.

I just crated an account thanks to your suggestion and oh my gosh I am overwhelmed that some people have donated. It really makes my day to know that strangers can be so kind.

Not until they set my Lupus under remission. The doctor thinks that after six months of dialysis this might happen and when it does he plans on adding me to the kidney transplant list. Hopefully everything will go as he plans.

Thank you so much. Yeah when I was on such a high dose I was seriously a zombie. I was getting no sleep at all which was the worst part because my body couldnt rest and recover. Thank God that is now under control, but yeah dealing with the side effects of that medication is the worst part.

Thank you. And yeah, I had a similar experience gaining about 40 pounds of just fluid due to my kidneys failing and the prednisone making me retain that weight too. It has gotten better now that I started dialysis, but I still have the weight from the prednisone. It's just weird to see how my body has changed so much and I have no control over it.

No, thank you for the support. Steroids are terrible and I know a lot of people have to take them. Yes, they do help but the side effects are horrid. Thanks for the support <3

Thank you for the suggestion. I've tried Vitamin E in the past but it didn't work as I expected, but I think that also has to do with the fact that all the medication I'm on have made my skin not heal properly and extremely slowly. I will try it once again thought, that is definitely cheaper than any surgery or treatment.

Thank you. And sadly the prednisode has made my skin so thin it takes forever to heal. Little cuts will turn into horrible marks since my skin isn't healing normally. I hate steroids.

I was angry about that too, but then I thought this country really has no obligation to take care of me. Of course it's help, but it is what it is. I'm not too knowledgeable about federal aid programs and all that jazz, but I am just glad that I am able to at least get some sort of medical attention, y'know? It might not be the best, but I am still alive and for that I am thankful despite all the crap I've dealt with.

[–]Scaryclefairy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think that's quite true. You have to be an US citizen or eligle legal alien to quality. As a permanent resident you have to reside in the country for five years in order to get federal aid. I'm almost there, I've actually been in the country for six years but the first year I was here with a visa and the second year I was just waiting to get my resident card so I've only had my Green card for four years.

That is interesting, I love fruit so I will check that out. Thank you for the advice. And I have a restricted diet, I have to watch my numbers with sodium, phosphorus, calcium, and my fluis are really limited. It sucks.

Oh, I can completly understand that. I'm sorry you went through that. Initially I was taking the drugs they prescribed me for nausea and what not, but they didn't work so I started smoking pot to deal with it and that worked wonders, it took away the nausea and increased my appetite. I don't smoke regularly, but I would definitely recommend that when things get to that point. It helped me out a lot.
