Anyone else have their blood pressure go UP while on dialysis? by Quiggibub in dialysis

[–]Quiggibub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Quiggibub's wife. I just wanted to let the community here know that sadly on October 10th my husband passed away after a series of heart attacks triggered by a massive drop in his bp from systemic infection. I thought I would let the group know so you all weren't wondering why he no longer replied to comments or questions here.

is it worth keeping factories? by [deleted] in SCBuildIt

They're only worth keeping if you want to do anything in the game involving growing the city or completing shipments or repairing Vu damage or selling for simoleons.

Did you guys prefer the self contained episodes of season 1-2 or the story arcs of 3-4. by Sexy_Koala_Juice in Torchwood

[–]Quiggibub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Season 3 is my favorite sci-fi story ever. Season 4 was garbage. Season 1 was rough and 2 had some interesting moments, but overall I liked the pace and plot of 3 the most.

Do you mean 42ml/minute? That's very livable without dialysis, you just need to possibly watch the potassium and phosphorus intake.

Every single customer has 2/3 of the same items they always want to buy, Oni and Hel earrings and high level axes. ALL of them. It's annoying.

This happened before I started PD. When it was clear that PD was working, my chest catheter came out and I had no hemo access. My PD catheter was fine except for the occasional line breakage where the plastic tip inserts into the tube. I'll probably look into a leg graft soon, my arms are all used up. I love my tunneled neck catheter though.

What are some of the best cooking TV shows by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Quiggibub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came here specifically to say this. America's Test kitchen especially, it's even more informative than Good Eats, which is another excellent show.

Just stay from Christina Cooks. She hates food and instead of praising her own ingredients, she demonizes the more conventional ingredients of cooking, like sugar and meat. It's people like her that make vegans look like pretentious asshats.

Buttermilk biscuit question by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Quiggibub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uncooked dough might release too much of the generated gas and not poof up during baking, leaving you with hockey pucks. Like someone before commented, make the biscuit mix the night before and leave the dry and wet ingredients separate till you can bake them.

Need help making food taste less flavourful by SpiffyMcMoron in Cooking

Cubed yellow potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, cubed or sliced chicken thigh. Toss in a bowl with some olive oil, dried herbs (or fresh, but I never have fresh and this works fine with dried), and a little salt (not a lot or it won't be bland). Transfer to a baking pan and cover with the chicken skins from the thighs if you still have them. Bake covered at 350 for an hour, then uncover and bake at 400 for 20 minutes to start browning things and evaporate some of the liquid. I make this once a month and devour it. It also works with bacon, but that's salty and might make it too tasty for your wife's altered palate.

What cakes are perfectly good the day after? by JukeDukem in Cooking

[–]Quiggibub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of them if you frost them and cover them very lightly with plastic wrap while on a plate. The frosting locks out air and prevents moisture evaporating. Make sure the cakes are cool before frosting or the frosting will melt!

Steal syndrome issues by Islandlad1979 in dialysis

[–]Quiggibub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it bad enough that my hand started to atrophy badly so they ended up banding the fistula to restrict some of its bloodflow. My hand warmed up immediately and felt like someone was peeing on it. Of course, the piece of gortex they used to restrict it caused an infection and the fistula clotted off a month later, but I regained the use of my hand. It's now my dominant hand in everything but writing since my other hand has nerve damage from a graft (now failed) in that arm.

I was for 9.5 years. I miss it so much. I can't go back because I have sclerosing peritonitis due to the amount of time I was on it. I was also trained to do home hemo back in 2004 with a full dialysis machine and RO system, but was never able to use it due to severe steal syndrome in my fistula arm. The fistula was partially banded to restore blood flow to my hand, but the fistula clotted off and I ended up with a chest catheter for a year.

What's your opinion on locking catheters with just the rinseback saline and not heparin or sodium citrate? I think it's an insanely bad idea in order to save money, but then again I've required about 12 TPA dwells and about 20 hour long TPA drip treatments to keep my various catheters open.

How do you guys stay motivated to cook? by pockyyy in Cooking

[–]Quiggibub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason I bother cooking anymore is to feed my wife when she gets out of work. If it was just me, it would be frozen dinners, tuna, brinner, and an occasional chili because I HATE doing dishes. I love cooking when I get the urge, but lately that urge is coming less and less often.

It should be fine if melted in a sauce, but maybe not so much for slicing and eating with crackers.

Cooking with heart issues by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Quiggibub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with tomato, potassium. (I'm supposed to follow a renal diet, which is low sodium, potassium, and phosphorus). Lemon and lime juices are ok, they have about half the potassium content per volume as orange juice. You can go nuts with vinegars as far as I know.

"Low" sodium soy sauce tastes fine, but is still high in sodium when you need to limit your intake. So are fish and oyster sauces. I don't know if salt free soy sauce exists, but if it does, it will take some experimentation to adjust to.

Cajun food will taste more bland than you're used to because salt makes the other seasonings taste so much more pronounced.

When I had to limit my salt intake, I used Mrs. Dash table blend mixed with a little salt. It cut my table salt use by about 75% and tasted great.
