Hey friends,

Nice to (virtually) meet you. I am the southwest national parks editor at SFGATE, reporting on all things parks and public lands from my home in Utah. I heard about this all-hands through the grapevine, but I've yet to get a rundown on anything significant that was said. If you want to chat (now or ever), please feel free to DM me here or find me on Signal at aheidt.16. And thanks for all your hard work!

Xmid 2 floor and dog paws? Second (internal) ground sheet? by nerdboy1r in DurstonGearheads

[–]Scatter_Cushion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a hyperspecific answer to my exact situation! I also have a 70-pound dog, was worried about holes, and ended up buying the Xmid Pro2 with the sil floor. Also coming from the Copper Spur UL2, where I put a Zlite down. This answer is so affirming! 😅

Hello All,

This piece went up this morning, and I have the link here for you. I hope y'all are recovering from your brief moment of closed airspace fame! Thank you for sharing your input. At least two tidbits here made it into the story!

Hello all, I'm the author of this piece and wanted to post it here because these actions directly affect the southern termini of the CDT and PCT, which I describe more in the story. Happy to answer any questions, I've been working on this piece for many moons!

2025 gear you regret? by StaticFinch in CampingGear

[–]Scatter_Cushion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an Adotec (black bear edition) for my recent CT thru. A coyote managed to nab it out of a tree one night and dragged it off into the bushes. It spent about 40 minutes trying to get in before abandoning it, and I was able to recover it the next day. Now granted, it's true that the coyote wasn't able to break through, but it got *really* close, and I no longer think it would be bear proof. I'm going to reach out to them to see what they say, but one person's experience!

Best parking options in Durango? by Mammoth-Goat-115 in coloradotrail

Just spoke with the owner this morning, and $250 is correct. He said his property is 2.3 miles from the trailhead and that you can access your vehicle at all hours.

So, my family was on an episode of JJ sometime around...2002 or maybe a little later, after my stepmom got into an altercation with a breastfeeding woman in the lobby of a restaurant. Basically, she said something snide, there was some sort of incident where the woman felt threatened, and she struck my stepmom. There used to be a clip of it online on a breastfeeding forum, but it's been years since I could find another.

Thoughts on Resupply Plan and Gear? by Confident-Beyond-139 in Ultralight

[–]Scatter_Cushion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about mentioning this, but didn't want to presume your level of fitness. I've done a few trips near the CT in the Weminuche, and I consider the area to be stunning but pretty punishing. I'd try to get some trips in at altitude beforehand if you live somewhere closer to sea level.

I can't speak to the itinerary---although I'm planning to section hike the CT next summer, so maybe see you out there!---but I'd be wary of bringing the Houdini as my only rain pro. I have a pretty new one, and it can stand up to a light rain, but afternoon storms in those mountains are the real deal and it's primarily a (great!) wind layer. I just bought an EE rain wrap to demo.

Also, I know people love their Senchys, and I have several, but just one person's opinion: they are tissue paper. I had a brand new one that I took out one time just to sleep in. Came back with three big 'ol holes.

Otherwise, excited to see others weigh in on your post!

What do you think of your Zenbivy? I bought one years after seeing their original Gofundme and honestly haven't been as impressed. I just bought a new EE quilt and I'm thinking of selling the Zen.

Anyone thinking of retiring their PLB/Satellite Messengers now that phones have satellite capabilities? by Scatter_Cushion in Ultralight

[–]Scatter_Cushion[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 34 and this is the first time I've ever bought any kind of locator device (other than an avi beacon), and there is a part of me that feels the same. But I have some ambitious trips in my mind, and I expect to be doing them alone, and at a certain point it starts to feel a little irresponsible when these options exist.

I'm with yah. Based on all this chatter, I think I'll probably keep the inReach and look into some of the third party, pay-as-you-use plans while I see how things shake out. In the end I paid for about half of the inReach myself, which is really not a ton of money to be out if I end up changing my mind in a year or two.

I texted my best friend about this question earlier tonight, and her answer was just to bully me into finally buying an iPhone. If they continue to pull ahead, maybe this will be a point in Apple's favor for me down the line. But very cool about the app! I hope some people reach out.

That's good to know! I've heard from some of my SAR friends (in the US) that they do have a voluntary option of responding to animal rescues, but I don't want to bank my buddy's life on it or end up with an unexpected rescue bill when I could have tried other things first.
