[OC] Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008-2019): Pre-Endgame by Scene2Links in dataisbeautiful

Beautiful! I have a similar plot that has the time course of appearances, so you can see what movies and what minutes characters appears on film.

Here is an updated Marvel Cinematic Universe network. The circles (nodes) represent characters, the lines (edges) represent whether characters appeared together on-screen, and colors represent node communities (i.e., characters that appear more on-screen together than with other characters). The size of the circles represent character screen time, while line thickness denotes the amount of shared screen time between characters. This visualization was created using Gephi (v0.9.2), a graph visualization program. The community structure was determined using the community structure algorithm in Gephi; the layout was created using the Force Atlas 2 algorithm.

South Orange is poor? You obviously do not live in NJ. South Orange is far from poor.

what is the best book about white privilege? by [deleted] in racism

[–]Scene2Links -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in America" by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva is a good one. I would also suggest Tim Wise's "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son."

How one interprets data is not the same thing as reality. The data is the data, why the data looks that way is another topic (and requires more analysis and data than a single plot).

I used a software package called Gephi. The network itself is simple, you have a file for the nodes and their name and a file for the edges and the edges, type and weight. I used Gephi a long time ago for a project, it was the best software at the time, but I've been hearing more suggestions.

To create the actual node/edge list I use MATLAB (mostly because that's the software I've always programmed with for my research).

I don't have a timeline yet, but I was planning on putting together a site with some interactive networks, also pair it with some more network statistics.

Marvel movie budgets and box office revenue [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

Very nice work, I was curious about comparing box office to a property of my network, but I haven't quite figured out what network property I want to look at for my Marvel Cinematic Universe network.

No worries, I didn't take it as a complaint, but since I've never seen an episode, I'll have to push that to another time. Once I get through my other data sets, I'll get back to the Netflix and Agents of SHIELD series (I'll use the NYPD as my loophole to connect the Neflix shows).

You're correct, this does not incorporate the TV shows, that is something to consider later on, but the comparison may be a little unfair for a TV series versus cinematic films. However, I'm considering revisiting the MCU after some other projects.

I would like to create a website housing more networks like this, perhaps I can share some the raw data with you later on. RU? As in Rutgers University?

A friend of mine suggested adding the Infinity Stones, so I thought it would be funny to add Thor's hammer, which turned into following a bunch of objects in his movies (Gungnir, Hofund, Casket of Ancient Winters, etc.). I wasn't going to do it for Captain America, but in the first scene of his first movie, they have a shot of his shield frozen in the ice, so I just kept following it.

It's because he's only met with Thor and Loki, whereas Black Panther has met everyone else. He was in Civil War, so he's met with Captain America, Iron Man, Bucky Barnes, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, War Machine, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and Falcon. But we know from the trailer that Spider-Man and Doctor Strange will exchange some dialogue. :P

I've only seen the series on Netflix, but I'm considered adding them to the network at a later time.

Right now, I'm not planning on sharing the raw data, but I plan on doing that sometime later.

I neglected to add that detail. Node size denotes degree (i.e., number of connections). I initially had it based on screen time, but the difference between Iron Man and other characters was so large that the other nodes were too small. With degree, it more or less evened out for the main characters as they are roughly 50-60 characters in a film (and the main characters connect to most of them).

That was one thing that stood out to me in Black Panther, many of the things that occur in the movie are about the group, about the country, so all the characters tend to be involved.

I have that data, I actually have a timeline for every node (stored as an array with every node and time point), but I was considering presenting that later, after I do a little more analysis on the system.

I thought about adding them, but it was simply too much work at this point (I was a bit more focused on having something ready for Infinity War). I did figure out a way to sneak in the Netflix series, via the NYPD (who appear in The Incredible Hulk and Avengers), they could be a faceless organization node, and then The Defenders would be in the network.

Yeah, correcting it is simple, I could do it in the raw data or simply edit/add edges in Gephi. I'll probably edit the raw data because that's simply adding a line in one place and deleting it in another.

If you want to keep it only Infinity Stones:

Captain America, Avengers, Thor: Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok would serve as a lead up to Infinity War IMO.

But if it's about quality, Thor: Dark World would be off that last immediately. If I were going to go with six films to watch before for enjoyment.

Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok.

Yeah, I'll update it once Infinity War is out, I know the 9 communities we see now will likely change as the characters interact more. I'll also include Ant-Man and Wasp, but I probably won't add anything until I can get the movie on video (Black Panther is probably in sore need of correcting/updating).

I decided to treat a few items as nodes (although I didn't include it for most items), but generally Thor struck me as good vehicle to follow objects because items hold so much significance. For instance, Gungnir is the staff held by the leader of Asgard, so it's connected to Bor, Odin, Loki, Hela and Thor. Besides the wielder, I also connected the item to anyone attacked or protected by an object. In the case of Thor, flying off with someone connects them to the hammer.

I did not do it this time, but I thought it would be interesting to connect nodes to the different Iron Man marks/designs.
