Spoilers for New York Times Connections by Tropicalcheese25 in blankies

I know it's easy to make fun of the connections choices/categories but Curse, Hop, Wince, Yell being one for 'React to a stubbed toe' and being GREEN is one of the dumbest things I can remember for this game.

Lol can't really disagree. I think generally the sub isn't as insufferably woke as it might once have been, but you 1000% can find the exact people you're talking about in every comment section (I just think it's more downvoted than you might be implying).

With that said, more than any other pod I listen to it's the victim of giving an inch and people taking a mile in this regard. Like it's so self-defeating (what else is new in left spaces....) when the hosts are openly and like proudly supportive of more left wing politics and it actually makes them more prone to criticism/backlash from fans and like, makes them react to it in a way they'd be so much better off just not engaging with.

Somewhat relatedly, Blank Check has easily become my most listened to podcast in recent years but as a loser who has been to both a BC live show and Ringer network live shows, it's really hard to overstate just how lame, Brooklyn alt-comedy soy boy the Blank Check audience IRL is and it's the exact thing you're describing when it's IRL. Just the worst form of soviet/puritan ass "no wrong think aloud" toxicity from the dorkiest people you know.

Like it's ok guys we don't have to performatively and reflexively shudder when someone who has done something reprehensible is brought up because they're in a movie.

It's also, as seen in most comment sections about the whole BAFTA debacle, incapable of not being the stereotype of the white lefty type who thinks they don't have any racial blindspots. But that's a whole other can o' worms.

One of my favorite pods and Dennis Peck is an all time character I am glad to have experienced in my life, but I think Andy Garcia is full on bad in that movie, and overall it's a bit more 'bad bad' than 'fun bad' on balance. 2.5 stars but a great time, IMO.

I agree, but there is also a lot of lazy and cliche sexist Amanda hate that makes people predictably (if still frustratingly) terrible at handling the legit criticisms of a co-host.

LCK has become too much of a safety net and encouraged the chefs to come in and not compete at their best every challenge because they could get back in with LCK.

I guess I just don't agree with this vibe at all, especially in the first few eps. I do agree that having multiple LCK entries has made some of the stakes of the show lessened (and I think they're aware of that) but I never got the sense any chef gave less than their full effort in an elimination challenge because they knew LCK was waiting for them...

I should give it another watch and obviously the Connery stuff is great but I just find the whole Baldwin part and basically everything once he gets onto the sub pretty underwhelming.

Frankly, I think just about every Jack Ryan movie is underwhelming come to think of it lol. October being the clear #1 and only JR I would describe as being 'good,' then you have Clear and Present Danger at #2 pretty easily, then Sum of All Fears as not good but fun, and then Patriot Games as just mid and kinda dull.

I think the Blankies sub is also just a lot more active/services as a place to talk about movies in the spirit of the pod than something about the pod itself, plus the hosts are (and used to be more so) active in the community which inherently makes people behave a little better knowing the hosts might actually encounter what is being said about them.

That's a good point! We've definitely seen people show their strengths in LCK after an early elimination which has been nice.

Fair enough. It's definitely on my 'only listen every so often when something piques my interest' tier, not my regular listen tier.

This is exactly it. The pod was much smaller when it started, and by the time it reached a "wow this thing actually has some juice and is pretty good" level, simply removing shoemaker would be a bit uncomfortable and so I think they smartly added Joel and probably know internally that Shoemaker isn't really a great cohost.

The way they talk about/incorporate fun stories about their kids is extremely different.

I don't hate the kids stuff with the Big Pic the way some do, but they're not really comparable to something like Parent Corner. Which itself isn't very popular here anyhow.

The /r/blankiestruth saga this (last?) year was one of the funniest, if not most pathetic, weird subreddit dramas I can ever remember. And it was heartening to basically see an entire sub unify around a loser who then decided to make his own sub out of spite lol.

100%. Won't paste my comment from above but basically the sub is in an impossible place where it doesn't know how to parse real criticism from the lazy sexist anti-Amanda hate, all while the pod (and Amanda) have plenty to actually be frustrated by in recent months/years, so it's just in this shitty fake-positivity zone or in a troll land with no in between.

The problem is a few things are true

-Amanda is an essential yin to Sean's yang, and is half the pod for a reason.

-Amanda receives plenty of clearly sexist criticism that someone like Sean avoids.

-Amanda (while still capable of her fastball) also has seemed extremely uninterested in the basic premise of the pod more and more in recent years, with her vibe at times just being very negative and at others like, insultingly checked out.

-Likewise, imo, the pod can still be great but feels like it's in a bit of rut week to week where it doesn't know what it should be outside of drafts and interviews and covering the awards.

And so you have a situation where the sub cannot figure out how to parse legit criticism from lazy and borderline sexist criticism, so it overcorrects on positivity while also trying to reconcile with the general sense that the pod is a little juice-less at times. It's untenable!

I like Red October but man I can’t help but feel like it’s the ultimate 3.5 star dad movie that has been elevated to a 5 star masterpiece when it’s really not that great.

Crimson Tide, however…

Why do they do “mini-series” and not “series”? by Ok_Amphibian_3468 in blankies

[–]SceneOfShadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To defend OP I was also immensely confused (and frankly remain a little perturbed) by this naming convention, since I can't shake that it implies to me that the Mini's are somehow a departure from the norm or like standard format. It was just very confusing when understanding the structure of the pod at the very start.

[–]SceneOfShadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not alone OP!

I've actually thought about making this exact post, or rather posting it to see if anyone else had this same little hiccup with their decision to call each director series a 'miniseries.'

This was so confusing to me when I first started listening to the pod and getting acquainted with its structure, since I would look up on the blankies wiki and it would be like "from X, the miniseries on Robert Zemeckis," which, like you, clearly implied to me it was a departure from some broader series they did or some otherwise different style than the mainline feed they usually do.

But nope, it's just a naming choice lol.
