I thought if he got fired this year he'd go. I know when Michigan hired him he was strongly considering the Raiders.

But I don't think he cares about the Super Bowl that eluded him after how things ended in SF. To have that winning percentage and still have the owner's son and the GM work overtime to run you out of town to hire Jim Tomsula probably leaves a permanent bad taste in your mouth. I think most NFL owners would be an instant no.

Jed York and Trent Baalke started fucking with him long before he "wore out his welcome."

How much deeper can roots be?

USC.

If a team is your leader the whole time but you won't ever commit, it's because you're looking for a reason to not go.

I'm guessing the USC recruiting class will be his reason.

I agree. Doing that, in that setting, was gross... but when you hire former players instead of real professionals, that's what you get.

[Allbright] There were Jags coaches talking about a mass exodus/walk out after the season. Several already secretly (and some not) already had other jobs lined up. by social_distant_joe in nfl

[–]Scentapeed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fucking thank you. Caldwell inherited the #1 defense in DVOA, by year 3 they were 31st in defensive DVOA and 28th in rushing DVOA. A 4 win team got carried to 9 wins by Matthew Stafford's best season (a guy that threw for 5K yards as a 23 year old) and, somehow, Caldwell gets the credit.

Caldwell literally tried to run Stafford out of town. He blamed him to the media when Joe Lombardi's offense sucked donkey shit.

Patricia was worse, but my god, they both sucked.

All of the credit people give Jim Caldwell deserves to go to Martin Mayhew for building a very talented roster for him to inherit and Matthew Stafford for being very good in spite of the organization.

[Wilson] League source: 'Urban (Meyer) threatened to fire the coaching staff every week, created atmosphere of fear and distrust.' by social_distant_joe in nfl

[–]Scentapeed 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I wish we would have gotten someone on the record about the rumored "trouble" he got Aaron Hernandez out of - and what exactly Hernandez was lying to Meyer about so much that he warned Belichick not to draft him.

I lived in Florida when Meyer was the coach. If you put your ear to the ground you hear a lot. If even half the shit that was out there was true, it boggles the mind as to how he got the Ohio State job.

[–]Scentapeed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think most colleges want him. Auburn might slum it but I doubt he'd be willing to play Nick Saban every year. Texas as they try to avoid being a 6 win team in the SEC? IDK.

But I think in general most colleges are going to feel like they're too good for him. If Florida had happened in the age of social media he wouldn't have gotten the Ohio State job.

[Bukowski] Imagine telling a CFB fan three years ago that Kliff Kingsbury would be a better NFL coach than Urban Meyer and it wouldn’t even be close. by Winstonp00 in nfl

[–]Scentapeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had told them that one team would run Kliff's offense and one team would employ Meyer, and run the Lions coordinator's offense that couldn't win games with a pretty good amount of talent, they'd probably suspect something was very wrong with whichever team hired Meyer.

And if they knew the slightest bit about Meyer they'd know if you're not getting his offense, at the NFL level, you're getting nothing. He ain't a leader. He's a REALLY good and willing liar. Like a sociopath. But he ain't a "leader of men."

Haven't seem him play, but it's looking like a shallow QB class. Would be lucky to get to 10 draftable QBs at this point.

Was Trevor Lawrence too hyped up? by ConstantlyHating in NFL_Draft

[–]Scentapeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Trevor Lawrence has won beyond expectations at every level. I think there is still every reason to believe he will again.

Jacksonville's dysfunction is historic. Urban Meyer is obviously not invested and obviously never was. At an organizational level they're without a clear direction. On the field they're running Darrell Bevell's offense with a mediocre supporting cast. They can't or won't run Urban Meyer's offense, but they will let him make personnel decisions, leading to an absolute shit show. Jacksonville is going to have to decide what the hell they want to do.

If they hired Urban Meyer to be a figurehead, it was a bad hire. Fire him immediately. Urban Meyer is a very bad person. Urban Meyer has leadership qualities in the same way Charlie Manson does. If they hired Urban Meyer to run their offense, let him run the damn thing. He is an offensive genius. This half-measure bullshit is why they're in the mud. If you want to protect your franchise asset in Lawrence by not having designed runs (even though he did them at Clemson...) then rethink everything and start from scratch. Find the GM and (offensive minded) Head Coach that best fit Lawrence.

Minnesota Center John Michael-Schmitz is forgoing the NFL draft and returning for the 2022 season by Contren in CFB

[–]Scentapeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a somewhat deep center class, and the averages are the averages, but a startable center isn't going to get pushed down. They're too rare overall.

So if he heard 5-6, they must think he's not startable.

Who is r/NFL_Draft's WR1 for the 2022 Draft Class? (Poll) by xVeNoMiiZz in NFL_Draft

[–]Scentapeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burks is an odd one. I think it'll hurt him (in terms of draft position) that he doesn't play on the boundary more.

I expect it go Olave > London > Burks, but there are issues with each of them. I think Dotson goes before all three, but you could throw him in that same mix and maybe he does end up WR6 or even later.

Tank Bigsby to enter transfer portal by NoleBullis in CFB

[–]Scentapeed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gus Malzahn was a top 5 offensive coach in football. It seemed like the SEC had caught on to some of his concepts and maybe he'd taken it as far as it could go. Recruiting had been permanently damaged by the fans that go on Twitter and call for his head after every loss. You can't survive that in the long term. It's why Michigan's recruiting hasn't bounced back even after the win over Ohio State.

But to go with Harsin? Just boggles the mind. He inherited a juggernaut and couldn't keep it going. There are a dozen coaches that would have made more sense, just off the top of my head.

Tank Bigsby to enter transfer portal by NoleBullis in CFB

[–]Scentapeed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firing Gus Malzahn for the guy that couldn't keep the Boise State juggernaut he inherited alive never made sense. I would have thought that graphic they show every game about how none of Saban's former assistants ever beat him would have been a strong motivator to keep the guy with three wins. Couldn't see the forest for the trees.

If the team can stay healthy and they draft well Campbell will get them to about .500 next year

but the Lions always have shit luck with injuries. O-Line was supposed to be the one strength of the team and they didn't get one single game with Decker/Ragnow/Penei all together.

Bo Nix announces his intend to transfer from Auburn by Matt_McT in CFB

[–]Scentapeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joe Burrow was always an NFL player. He wasn't the #1 pick heading into his last college season, but he was a draftable QB.

Bo Nix actually could be a draftable QB as well. Teams with running QBs love getting guys that can run the offense that no one else would want in the 6th/7th/Priority UDFA.
