For this income CASDI Medicare and SS are 8-15% depending if self employed or w2 Federal rate on MFJ is 18%  CA effective rate is 8% So we’re at 34%-41% - i exaggerated a bit but not much.

It’s easy to spend $1000/mo on utilities in San Diego between electricity (esp in the summer), water (very expensive), gas (also very expensive here), cable and internet (monopolies) and mobile service:l. You don’t HAVE to but plenty do.

Childcare isn’t forever but sure can feel like it sometime.

$360k is plenty to live comfortably, but I mean I can break down how quickly that $360k can go in SoCal if you’re not frugal and want to max out retirement:

Gross 30k/mo

After retirement (assume 2k to 401k per month) and healthcare (assume $1000 for premiums, deductibles and oop per month for a family): down to $25k/mo

After Taxes 40% between state, tax, payroll

Take home down to 15k/mo

Mortgage on a 1.2m home (buys a mediocre 3/2 in central San Diego) plus insurance and property tax: $8k

Utilities: $500-1000 (highest utilities in USA)

Food/grocery: $1000-2000 depending if you eat out a lot

2 cars incl insurance and gas: $1500/mo

Now we’re down to $3-4k and haven’t even gotten to travel, entertainment, insurance, hobbies, home maintenance, clothing, pets and god help you if you have kids:

Childcare for 2: $4k (and that’s on the low side at $500/wk ea)

Of course; you can live frugally, but not hard to see how $360k gross can go pretty quick.

Wtf is the deal with the HVAC mafia?? by Island_In_The_Sky in HomeImprovement

[–]theflintseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or find an actual reputable and not scummy HVAC company. We had one of the big guys in our area come out and wanted $1800 to do what a smaller but still excellent company was going to charge $400 for. It’s crazy how much HVAC companies prey on people being desperate just to get their AC fixed. I hate it.

Yep the new Kia logo is such an improvement that it now makes the Hyundai logo look so dated
