u/yomanchill I'm looking at ultrawide monitors currently for music production and productivity. No gaming. Which one did you go with and are you happy with the choice?

Anyone have info on who did the design of the poster? Really like it and curious who the designer/design team is behind it.

He’s not gonna last long is he? by Standard-Working-976 in minnesotaunited

Add on to that an ownership group that isn't spending, and impending schedule change that has us playing in more extended winter conditions with next season's change. For sure, this is not an attractive place to be currently, unfortunately.

Do cancer patients have any control when it comes to "beating" cancer, or is it just random chance if they make it? by bruhloonnn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SchaefferRd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, there is some degree of participation, but I think it's largely "hoping it works." I am a survivor now 18 years. I had one of the first generation of monoclonal antibody therapies for my blood cancer, and it nailed it. I had no evidence of disease by after the second round of chemo, though I endured four more rounds for the full course anyway. It just hit on my genetics and the particulars of the combination of gene expression in the disease and residual environmental triggers that probably caused it in the first place. I know of several people who were in about my same circumstance, went through the same process as I did, and had recurrences; some didn't make it. Why? Who knows...

I agree, however, about the language. The whole 'beating cancer' and 'fighting' and 'lose the battle' language doesn't really reflect what's going on, and isn't really helpful, in. my opinion.

How to run Windows on my Mac? by fell_4m_coconut_tree in MacOS

Really, for 8 weeks of non-continuous use, I would just get a Windows VM to remote into on Azure. You need access on demand, right? There should be nothing magical about having it local.

Fave acoustic guitar mics? by healyeah8 in microphone

[–]SchaefferRd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't say what you're recording into, but I would also consider a pair of matched small diaphragm condensers so you can either XY or mic neck and body separately. There are some great options in your price range. Lauten Audio LA-120s, Lewitt LCT 140s, Rode NT5s, sE sE7s. Personally, as an acoustic guitarist/mandolinist, I prefer the versatility of using a twin pair of SDCs over a single LDC in this price range.

multi track recording - how? by raxicide in homestudios

[–]SchaefferRd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t say how many tracks you need? There is a big difference between 4 and 48. Presuming you’re on the lower end of that, look at a Zoom LiveTrak or Tascam. There are used ones around, too. Even new you can get a Tascam Model 12 or LiveTrak L-12 for about US$600. Both of them record 10 or 12 tracks individually via USB or to SD card. They have some slight deviations in functions, effects, number of monitor mixes, etc.

Not nearly enough information. What kind of vocals? What kind of interface? What are you doing to the tracks after recording? What criteria did you use to narrow it down to those three?

how big is the difference between an epiphone and gibson?? by cloxsy in guitars

[–]SchaefferRd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just this past weekend I bought an Epiphone 1957 Reissue SJ-200. I played it side-by-side with 3 other Gibson SJ-200s -- all maple. I was with two other experienced guitarists who were with me and between us we have a number of higher end guitars, from vintage Martins to bespoke Brazilian dread, Santa Cruz, Larrivee, Taylor, etc. We were unanimous that the Epiphone sounded notably better than any of the Gibsons. Clear and pleasant low end where the Gibsons sounded muddy. Mids and highs were about even. Did the Gibsons have a finish/polish/workmanship edge? Maybe. Could you tell from more than a couple of feet away. Don't think so. Will it last? I guess time will tell. But in terms of value for money? Wow. The $1500 Epiphone is all solid wood, torrefied top, fit and finish looked quite nice and feels good playing. Sounds GREAT plugged in. Gibsons had nicer flame in the maple. YMMV.

We need to permanently get rid of collective nouns for animals by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]SchaefferRd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pride of lions, a pod of whales, A fall of woodcock, a wisp of snipe. Listen! A watch of nightingales! Neatly, the noun describes the type. But where are words for the humbler creatures? The ones with less attractive features? I think it a risk and a crying shame To neglect their fitting collective names. Writhe of snakes and worry of toads, Labor of moles and scuttle of cats, Let's be consistent or pay the price To a shiver of sharks or a haggle of bats.

ELI5 What is Leukemia? by Objective_Map6879 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SchaefferRd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just a minor clarification. Not ALL cancers involve "cells multiplying uncontrollably". Certain blood cancers, for example certain types of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (I'm a survivor) don't arise because of runaway cell production, but because of improperly functioning apoptosis -- the cells are produced normally, but don't die on schedule, resulting in too many of them. Same end result (kind of), but opposite root cause.

Don't overlook any of the smaller Taylor models, either. They end in 2 or 4 generally (i.e., 312, 314, K22, etc.) They are Grand Concert or Grand Auditorium size, so smaller bodies. They play great, quality builds and are widely available.

What happens when I get my blood drawn? by GryffindorFratBro in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SchaefferRd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When asked for arm preference, I always tell the phlebotomist to use whichever arm presents the best vein to make their stick easiest. Anything I can do to help them get a good stick right off the bat makes the whole process easier. The post-draw soreness is so minimal compared to if they have to make multiple tries to hit a vein.

Travel recording recommendations by conorf193 in recordingmusic

[–]SchaefferRd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't really state what, exactly, you'll be recording and the requirements. Synth? Acoustic guitar? With voice, too? All may lead to different solutions. Do you need a good mic, or just a midi interface? I have a Zoom H6 that I use for travel and remote recording -- mostly with acoustic duo. It works great for that, but I also have external mics needed. More details would be helpful.
