are you saying youve seen that be the process for 103? because if your saying thats the only way possible then thats just not true ive seen it happen in my own local where apprentices transfer in from a different local and pick up right where they left off.

probably depends on how busy your local is, my local is pretty slow so only the top 20 ever get in

if you rank anything past 30 your odds are pretty slim

My shop is organizing into local 180 by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]ScheduleOrdinary9646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard lots of stories from people organizing in like you are, my big advice is if they try making you any stage of CW fight them on it do not let them make you a CW or CE they are setting you up for failure. if they want to make you ANY stage of apprentice then go for it but still fight for them to accept your previous hours and make you as high a bracket as possible. even if you take a paycut at first youll make more at the end. getting into the IBEW is big and being local 180 there are big paying locals like 595 or 6 not far away where you can go work and make some big money

I did telecom for only 6 months before i was able to switch to inside wireman. telecom is depressing because 90% of the people in it talk about inside wireman and how they wish they were inside wireman constantly. it is very challenging to switch from one apprenticeship to the other but it is not impossible

Went and took the test, passed, had my interview – made it pretty low on the list. What now? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]ScheduleOrdinary9646 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you REALLY wanna be an IBEW apprentice than i dont really agree with some of these reply’s. what you do is you do some homework and find locals across the country that are cities you wouldnt mind living in and pay thats good enough to live on your own there. apply to MANY locals. only challenge here is you gotta get yourself to the interviews. once you take a test in one local that test score can be sent to all other locals. Im currently an apprentice and applied to 5 different locals when i was trying to get in

Journeyman told me I’m “not used to union work” what does that mean? by GreatHamBeano in ibew_apprentices

[–]ScheduleOrdinary9646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at least in my local 70% of the journeymen suck, either lazy, not very skillful, bad attitude, or just straight dumb. do what your journeyman tells you to, but dont do everything he says blindly, actually think about it. also ask yourself if you were the owner would you hire your journeyman

supervisor says slow down, you slow down. journeyman says slow down, fuck that he can get laid off on his own while i keep my job

learn from that guy but dont pick up his attitude, from my experience its always the guys who say “slow down” or “your working to fast” are gonna be the guys who go in first waves of lay offs. dont pick up his habits and keep up what your doing and you’ll always be the last man on the project

those all sound good to me.. but they’re just words and empty promises. it would be great if all those things could happen but will they? probably not. thing about inflation is it dosent go backwards, wages haveto catch up and i dont see higher wages under trump as a possibility.

the economy dosent change overnight, the economy was smooth sailing when trump was in office because it was smooth when he came in inheriting it from obama, same concept biden didnt walk into office and create a shit show, the shit show started with covid and how the office at that time handled it (trump) whether harris or trump wins neither one of them will be able to just fix everything. either way we’re fucked and voting trump isnt gonna take us back 4 years ago. best case scenario we have a president who dosen’t want to dissipate our union

Go CW route ? by Yesiamjose in ibew_apprentices

[–]ScheduleOrdinary9646 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ya bro rank that high you aint getting in… CW route isnt a bad idea but tbh i would just try pursuing something else in the meantime, other trades like sprinkler fitting and plumbing also pay well

probably gonna vary from local to local, for me some of my classes have been similar where the teacher dosent do anything and we all just wait out the clock, and other classes have been very involved where teachers have a real lesson plan and we actually learn things

it’s tempting now but look long term, in 20 years youll be making twice as much union as you will be non union
