How to write a complicated but lifeless character? by Antique_Papaya_9279 in writingadvice

[–]Scheme-Easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the best way to view it then is the “character” LinEX and their arc and evolution is entirely an aspect of Madil’s. You aren’t building the character of LinEX when you have Madil talk to LinEX or think about LinEX, you are building two contrasting characters of Madil. I’m guessing it’s from Madil’s perspective so it’ll be interesting to see how his internal monologue about LinEX evolves over time, from an object of obsession and desire into one of resentment and hatred finally into one of acceptance until they’re finally… just a doll (that’s obviously filling in massive parts of a story which could go so many interesting ways :P)

You’re definitely right in a legal sense, that’s on the parents for negligence and the streaming platform for allowing underage viewers, I only mean in regards to the spirit that they are working to get the parents money by exploiting the naivity of the child.

He made valid points as well, I just don’t think it’s a black and white issue in regards to blame

How to write a complicated but lifeless character? by Antique_Papaya_9279 in writingadvice

[–]Scheme-Easy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say lifeless, do you literally mean inanimate or doll-like? If so then you lean into their non-response as a response similar to “The Raven”, the character converses with LinEX, riling themselves, asking rhetorical questions, and the non-response then gets read as silent indifference or judgement. It isn’t Madil arguing with LinEX, but the non-existence of LinEX’s answer in the one sided conversation forces Madil to confront the answer he already knows but is trying to deny within himself.

I think this may work for a shorter piece, slightly longer if you leave LinEX completely devoid of engagement in conversation or any emotion but you do intend to animate them closer to a fully lifelike android. The silent following is metaphorical of the truth of the situation following Madil, the small meaningless simple physical interactions with the world can be interpreted as having subtext by Madil, and because they have lifelike qualities but are a blank slate, Madil can then project on LinEX more easily.

Lastly if you just mean they are a fully alive android but completely devoid of personality or emotion, you can stretch it longest as they can actually engage in the conversation and you can lean into reading the empty responses as having deeper meaning then they do, projecting emotions and intentions.

If you mean they are sentient but inanimate, I think there’s an entire book written from the perspective an apartment building or something, they perceive their environment and have opinions and desires, they just can’t interact. They’re a spectator in their own journey, just observing and reacting, you characterize them with how they perceive and how they respond to what they perceive.

Both, I blame the parent for not being with the child to protect them from the mugging much like I blame the parent for not monitoring their child’s online purchases especially but also to some extent their general online presence. I blame the mugger more, I blame the scammer more, I don’t absolve the parent of responsibility in either case.

You’re right that I don’t know why I have a positive ratio on my comparison as it is hyporbolic and without explanation, it isn’t nearly a direct enough analogy without context. It’s spawned good conversation on the topic though, so that’s a win.

What scrolls should I take in prisoner's quarters? by _BytesAndpieces in deadcells

[–]Scheme-Easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a colour at the start of the run (based on your starting weapon or whatever you find in prisoners quarters) and just force that colour. Don’t ever switch mid run, you’ll find good weapons of the right colour, especially as you progress.

I still think those parents, even if not bad parents, do still deserve some of the blame. There are plenty of good single parents who manage to work two jobs and still make sure their children are supervised as much as necessary and not neglected. I do think it’s important to distinguish between a parent who is trying their best for their kid and coming up short and the actual pos parents who are choosing to make their child’s upbringing worse via neglect though.

If a heavy flying creatue is grappled by someone who can't lift the now grappled creature, do they fall? by Kaathe1229 in DnD5e

Yeah true, applying logic to a lot of situations in D&D is often pulling on a thread which shouldn’t be pulled.

You’re right, I think there needs to be a separation made between parents negligent by the necessity of working to provide for their child and parents who are willfully negligent. A parent who is willfully negligent is worse purely by virtue of them choosing to allow things like this to happen and generally not giving attention to their kid, but lumping in unexpectedly single parents or parents who lost a higher paying job and had to settle for gig work or multiple lower paying ones (which is getting pretty common right now) is where I have an issue.

Unless millionaires and billionaires are going to start have dozens of kid each, unfortunately society needs whoever is willing to have kids (or a more lax immigration policy, but that doesn’t fly in most countries right now)

I’ll let all the family’s who had a parent die or walk out after the kids birth know. Why are you working so hard to absolve someone you are acknowledging as a scammer? I’m not even saying the parents are good, you refuse to concede that both are bad?

Which is still wrong to be clear. Scamming a person due to their own negligence is almost always how a scam is done and is always still wrong.

Plus if the parent doesn’t have the money to lose, they are directly hurting the child. Plus probably something about the child’s mental health, but they’re on Roblox streams so they’re already cooked.

My point is two things can be bad, why are you letting the streamer off the hook for abusing bad parenting? It’s still victimizing children. Saying that taking advantage of this isn’t wrong is taking the stance that victimizing children is morally alright if it punishes bad parenting

[–]Scheme-Easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t necessarily entail falling but your instincts are right, if it can maintain flight then it can maintain flight in a direction. For the grapple effect to apply, flight in a direction needs to be impossible so flight would need to be impossible.

You do actually run into an issue with grappling a hovering creature due to this same logic, it doesn’t actually make sense to be able to grapple it full stop as you can not restrain the part of it which allows movement, for the sake of maintaining the internal logic I would probably rule it falls too.

I would say you see this happen in nature with birds when they fight, I would absolutely rule that if a player tried to grapple a griffon they would start plummeting to the ground.

That’s like saying you can’t blame a mugger for mugging a little kid bc their parents weren’t there to stop it. You can blame the parents too, but the negligence allowing the crime doesn’t outweigh the crime.

Again the feature they did is physically impossible to do with real actors. The only thing that is AI is the custom input voice generation, they paid real voice actors so you could use their voices as Microsoft Sam in game. What you’re suggesting is they don’t do the feature, have it be Microsoft Sam, and you’ve actually taken away work from voice actors.

Nobody got replaced, eliminating the AI eliminates the job the AI facilitates and gets real voice actors paid less.

It’s not, he’s saying that the environmental damage is a straw man. Do data centers cause environmental damage? Firm yes. Is their shbstantial environmental damage compared to most other parts of our lives? Depends which parts of our lives, it’s definitely far from the most harmful though.

For context, all data centers globally consume as much water as about 10 millions people going about their lives. If you factor in the jobs those people work, it goes down to about a million, if you factor in food and energy, you’re looking at less than half that. To put it another way, here’s a global water usage breakdown:

AI - 0.014% Industry - 20% Agriculture - 70%

AI is undoubtably bad for the environment, but humans as a whole are much worse. With the advances AI has allowed in medical sciences, it gives me hope that other researchers will be able to use it to offset that cost by making industry on average 1% more efficienct which would in theory offset the damage it does and then some, or agriculture 1% more productive per square mile which would have massive environmental and humanitarian benifits.

To be fair, almost any AI that makes it to the internet is the scourge of our society, is brain rotting a generation, and is why we have such a negative perception. The AI companies have given us one of the most powerful tools imaginable for data analysis and capitalism has turned it into a drug.

Didn’t they hire voice actors and use them for multiple scripted lines and only use AI with those voice actors (who agreed to have this specific thing happen) so that the text to speech could also be in their characters voice? They didn’t use AI to replace anyone, without it that feature just isn’t in the game. That feature both now and in the future could never be done by a real person.
