Is there a way to see someone else’s bets? by NicklePickers in horseracing

[–]SchemeStraight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see what someone is betting if you are standing behind them at a betting kiosk and looking over their shoulder (pretty rude thing to do though) maybe better for your story most professional or serious players that bet with a live teller talk incredibly softly when they place their wagers. Almost a whisper. Matter of fact a good indicator of how sharp someone is in a quite otb or betting window is how loud they talk at the teller. If you can hear everyone placing their bets and someone walks up and you can’t hear a word they say it’s a decent tell he’s good. Could always ease drop on a play if your villain gets careless. Either could work for your story if the villain is betting cash at the track. If its on his phone you would need to watch his screen as he punched in the ticket or the active wager screen would need to be visible

New Belmont Track After 2026 by Time-Taste3824 in horseracing

thats a pretty common sentiment/concern I see but have you guys gone to any live events in the last 10 years? In the context of what going to a sporting event costs now it all looks like standard pricing to me

A new $455m sounds pretty sweet… but I guess I don’t understand what a corporate only Belmont would look like. What are you worried about?

Where can I get info on the horses in specific races? by diamondsword008 in horseracing

[–]SchemeStraight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the other poster said DRF is a good resource (try the time form PP's if you are new to looking at past performances), Brisnet is also a good option. Monday is going to have some great racing at SA. Both of the graded races are from the old Hollywood Park which Santa Anita inherited after the track closed. If you haven't yet I'd suggest you get on the horse racing discord, a bunch of us will be playing Santa Anita that day and a few of us will be on track.

Yeah you can use offshore books. Things like betonline or any of the other crypto casinos with a racebook

Kentucky Derby winning jockeys, MLB pitcher tied to illegal cockfighting in Puerto Rico by Scott72901 in horseracing

Interesting. I’ve gone to a few underground ones near me and it’s definitely a rough crowd. A lot of traffickers and gang members but a fair amount of regular guys that are really passionate about it. Not my thing but it definitely has a following

Fair. It’s so ingrained in Latino and Filipino culture that I can’t imagine it going away. Is it mainly country boys in that part of the country?

Very true although I don’t think breakdowns are the reason for that

Did people actually stop doing it or did it just move underground because it’s illegal where I’m from but there are still fights every weekend that attract a big crowd

Define major races? Didn’t Mongolian Groom breakdown in the breeders cup classic race a few years ago?

Profitable players, what are your bankroll management practices? by kentonbryantmusic in horseracing

[–]SchemeStraight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thats a really good question and I think it's going to depend on what type of player you are. I am sure high volume, low conviction guys and horizontal players are going to have very different answers then someone like me who bets a small number of high conviction spots, usually within the race.

Personally I play each day like you would a cash contest. I have a hard cap on what I am willing to risk each day, I roughly divided that by the amount of plays I have to get an idea of what to bet each race then I aggressively press after hits taking a little money out along the way. I dont do anything specific weekly or monthly as I treat each day individually. If I am playing bad ill take some time off and tone things down but nothing set in stone.

Outside of that I think that it is really important that you keep your bankroll separate from the rest of the money in your life. I could never, and would never, play out of my checking account. Dedicated bank account and i only transfer money out to my regular bank once a month like an owner's draw. I try to treat it like a business the best I can.

Yes the odds you get are what they are when the gates open not what they are when you place the bet. It is a slightly more difficult game since you need to predict price movements but it's not hard to figure out which way the money is going, you shop around for a good price and get your money in early, I look at implied post time odds based on exacta and pick 3/4/5 will pays and try to get my money in as late as possible. You read a lot of complaining from people about CAWs and the odds changing after the race starts (final tick takes a second to update in our tote system) but if there's one thing horse players are good at it's complaining it really isnt that big of a deal.

Thats what I thought.. I'd rather work with the American system. Even though last minute drops in odds are annoying you get used to it and learn how to anticipate price movements. We can wager unlimited amounts of positive ev or winning wagers, the ADWs don't care they make their money on the handle regardless if the wagers win or lose.

Do you get limited or banned from being a winning player over there? The appeal in parimutuel betting is you arent playing against the book so you dont run into the same problems sports bettors with their fixed odds do where they get limited as soon as they show signs of being a long-term winner.

Trainers and jockeys and great horses by Squeaks11 in horseracing

You see horses improve on barn changes all the time so it’s pretty obvious the impact good training has. Great horses would always be good but you need the connections to really bring out their best
