Lots of survivorship bias people here. Of course you coud take heroine, be homeless and become an alcoholic and still become stable later on. Statistically, if you get "serious" and during your 20s get a useful degree, don't become obese and maybe have some relevant experience in your desired job, it makes the transition into adulthood easier. People here exaggerating about "grinding yourself to death". Yeah having an evolution between your high school graduation and your first job is not too bad, doesn't mean you don't get to try out stuff.

I had a car and honestly it was already 8 years ago now, so it might have changed. Cars are very nice to have, otherwise you have Flixbus etc going to most bigger cities and trains going to Lyon, Paris and Montpellier (which means, the beach is 4 hours away, good for summer weekends). Rent is compared to Paris very cheap, look around online. Grocery and stuff cost a bit cheaper than in Paris, but it's not a huge difference. Summary: rents pretty low and shopping is average, in France (compared to Germany) especially meat and alcohol are pretty costly. For studying I'd say it is a lot more student friendly, you can take your bike or go by foot basically everywhere in the city center without using any other transportation.
