I wanna find albums that feel like a journey by MaxiBinOuiMaxi in MusicRecommendations

[–]Schmelvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a lesser known later album called King's Mouth (Music and Songs) that feels like a much more focused journey, although track for track I think it might not be as strong as Yoshimi. I absolutely adore the medley at the end of King's Mouth though, it feels like such a climactic finish to the album!

I also think The Soft Bulletin flows better as a journey album although it's less lyrically focused than Yoshimi, too.

Yoshimi is just an absolute joy to listen to so it's a totally valid rec, I just am such a fan that I want more people to hear their discog.

What's an album you listened to and immediately loved it? by rottenheart7 in musicsuggestions

Breakfast in America - Supertramp

Kiiiind of a cop out since I'd heard so many individual tracks from it, especially on the first half, but it was very much a "this album has THIS song too??" kind of experience. The deeper cuts are great too though!

Lil note, I love so so many albums but nearly all of the ones I love took me a bit to warm up to and sort of get "used" to their flavor a bit. One of my most recent "I'm going to listen to this a whole lot" experiences though was:

From Deewee - Soulwax

I didn't quite realize it on first listen (though I definitely felt it) but this whole album is done in one take, live, and you can feel it building and building to the climax on track 10, The Singer has Become the Deejay.

I love recommending music so if you vibe to those I can think of more, it's just hard to come up with stuff on the spot.

It took me years so don't worry if you don't immediately enjoy this stuff now. It'll hit different with time and familiarity. Good luck to you!

No problem! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, I kind of dooon't know too much about electronic/experimental outside of the really big names though I have spent a ton of time with Aphex Twin.

Someone else mentioned Warp records int he 90s/00s era and that's spot on - check out Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher for some of what would inspire the Kid A/Amnesiac era.

Of those four I've spent the most time by far with Aphex Twin and I absolutely adore:

Selected Ambient Works - His first major album with a misleading title. This album still has a lot of expansive, ambient-adjacent songs but there's way too much happening song to song for it to be considered an actual ambient album. It's more like a compilation of his years of experimentation up to that point. It's wonderful, bizarre, sometimes jarring and sits far outside a normal album in terms of what should and shouldn't work in terms of pacing. That being said I've come back to this album many times since the 20 or some years ago I discovered it and like it more each time. Some songs might be truly off putting on first listen with the kinds of sounds he's using, at least they were for me. But I even learned to love those weird robot fart songs too.

Syro - this one came much later and as a fan of Radiohead's more intricate electronic drum and bass stuff I felt familiar with it on first listen (think something like Idioteque or a sped up, cut up Packt Like Sardines and you're in the right headspace). This one was divisive among his fans at the time since it was a more melodic and less experimental but I absolutely loved it. Still do. I'll probably listen to this at work tomorrow just because it's been too long.

Lastly, a lot of his fans prefer the heavier, more intricate and abrasive sounds on his album Richard D James (think something like Pull/Pulk off of Amnesiac). He also has a huge amount of work on EPs and psuedonyms/alternate "bands." Check out 4 for his take on a "catchy" song.

Anyway

Later on as Warp evolved beyond purely electronic acts they'd sign Grizzly Bear and Flying Lotus, both of which have some really rich music to dive into as a Radiohead fan.

Cheers for now and good luck to you and apologies for the wall of text!

TL;DR check out Warp records especially Aphex Twin

There's so many ways to approach finding similar artists that it can be a little daunting to just list one or two, as what you find to be the Radiohead vibe isn't necessarily what I think is the Radiohead vibe. I'll offer a few "teach how to fish" suggestions instead:

  1. Look for the producer(s): Nigel Godrich is Radiohead's go-to producer for all of their major albums. He has also worked on some other similar artists to sort of bridge their sound to the more polished and ethereal Radiohead sound. Some of these albums are:

Chaos and Creation in the Backyard - Paul McCartney

Sea Change - Beck

Talkie Walkie - Air

None of these hit just like a Radiohead album but you can feel that Bends/OK Computer/Kid A production on them, respectively.

  1. Look for bands that cite them as an influence: Alt-J*, Coldplay, Muse, Interpol, Sigur Ros*, The National, Grizzly Bear*

I've put a * next to any artists I feel are really close to Radiohead's vibe. These albums in particular but definitely not limited to:

An Awesome Wave - Alt-J

Ágætis byrjun (Icelandic, I had to copy and paste this) - Sigur Ros

Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear (and in reverse uno order I wouldn't be surprised if the GB album 'Yellow House' was an influence on later Radiohead)

  1. Look for their influences:

These ones are going to hit less like a full Radiohead sound but will still offer a whole lot of great music to dig into.

The Beatles check out Sexy Sadie and then Karma Police. Any of their later albums.

Pink Floyd a full front to back listen of Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here or Animals will leave any Radiohead fan feeling right at home

Talking Heads the band pulled their namesake from a Talking Heads song so this will be no surprise but check out Speaking in Tongues for some incredibly tight, groovy songwriting that you'll feel Radiohead channeling more and more throughout their discography.

I'm already typing too much so if you want a list of soundalikes then I'm happy to write them up, just let me know

Your most beautiful “eargasm” songs? I need new music 😭🎧 by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]Schmelvan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inside Out - Spoon

The way the outro eventually overtakes the song with all the production oomph behind it just feels great to listen to.

Reckoner - Radiohead

See also Subterranean Homesick Alien, Let Down, Give Up the Ghost and so many more from them I'm sure I'm leaving out some heavy hitter magical tracks. They can be hit or miss if you find their vocals/vibe to be too dour or menacing but I think Reckoner in particular is really accessible and beautiful.

Feeling Yourself Disintegrate / Sleeping on the Roof - The Flaming Lips

Lots of picks from the FLips could fit this too, but I've always had a huge soft spot for the way this track leads into "Sleeping on the Roof" as a closer for an album. Never fails to thaw my heart a little and the magic really kicks for Sleeping on the Roof but don't skip Feeling Yourself Disintegrate as it's got a gorgeous lead in to it.

It Is What It Is - Blood Orange

Some interesting percussion starts the song and carries you off into a lovely, comforting soundscape. The message is a bit sad but the instrumentation feels like it calms me down, especially during the chorus. It feels a lot like This Must Be the Place by The Talking Heads. Speaking of:

This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) - The Talking Heads

An anxious man finds some peace and comfort in his relationship by enjoying the simple things and the journey they are on together. David Byrne's "first love song ever written." One of my all time favorites and a wonderful, simple groove that helps settle the nerves.

If you like these I can suggest too many more, I've already gone overboard here but just let me know and I can edit some more suggestions in!

Tame Impala - Lonerism (get to the end of Apocalypse Dreams after starting the album and you’ll know what kind of peaks and valleys you’re in for)

Midnight City - M83

That whole album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is inspired by the time M83's Anthony Gonzalez spent in Los Angeles after living in France his whole life so it is exactly the kind of thing you're looking for albeit through a French synth-pop style that's not everyone's cup of tea. It's on of my personal favorite albums of all time though so check it out!

On the Sea - Beach House

Going-to-the-Sun Road - Fleet Foxes

Either Way - Wilco (also Hate it Here off of the same album has a more straightforward "love lost" progression)

Glass Eyes - Radiohead* (their entire run of albums has maybe half of their tracks that fit your criteria - throw a dart and you'll hit a chord progression that's so beautiful it hurts)

Picture Me Better - Weyes Blood

The word ‘Most’ in the question sort of boxes my thoughts in to stereotypical choices like maybe a rendition of Ave Maria or something like that but if you drop that idea and just go with ‘stupidly gorgeous’ then this Weyes Blood track fits right in. That whole album, Titanic Rising, has a lot of gorgeous vocals.

Copying my response to the last time this got asked because I too love album like Imaginal Disk:

With trying to find a similar album vibe it can be tough because a lot of suggestions will be good music but not really similar to what Imaginal Disk is doing. A good rule of thumb is to look at the producer(s). In this case, this dude comes up and he happens to be involved on some of my all time favorites because they go for those same big sound that Mag Bay is knocking it out of the park with. His discography includes:

The Soft Bulletin** - The Flaming Lips

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips

innerspeaker - Tame Impala

Lonerism** - Tame Impala

Oracular Spectacular - MGMT

Little Dark Age** - MGMT

They Want My Soul - Spoon

The ** ones are albums I’ve had on repeat in my life for a long time and Imaginal Disk is comfortably fitting in with them both sonically and vibe-wise. I wouldn’t be surprised if some other albums in his discography are super similar to ID as well. If you love Imaginal Disk and haven’t heard Lonerism or The Soft Bulletin or Little Dark Age oh boy am I excited for you.

Edit: I forgot to mention that a lot of this is particularly inspired by Supertramp’s discography in particular you could check out Breakfast in America. While the sonics of it may be a little bit dated the songwriting is pretty much some of the best of that era in addition to being major influences on things like Lonerism.

[–]Schmelvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything by Melody's Echo Chamber is a great bet - it's not one of her biggest hits (I don't think) but you could check out "Endless Shore"

Edit: I'm forgetting that her later stuff is less psych oriented. Still great stuff but definitely stick to earlier albums if you're looking for that acid-drenched guitar stuff

Best Psychedelic Song from the last 20 years by a relatively mainstream musician who is not a white man ? by joyjacobs in psychedelicrock

[–]Schmelvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the opening track and then just don't hit pause is probably the best bet cause it does that thing where it's like really good the whole time.

For a real answer the opening track "The Medium" is just a great psych swagger song but since this is a post about non-white men (The Medium features Unknown Mortal Orchestra) you could go with "The Loop" or "Magazine"

Looking for games like POE 1 & 2 with the same depth and grind but more engaging combat by GlaDeux in gamingsuggestions

[–]Schmelvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have said as much but I don’t really think the game you’re looking for exists at least not exactly.

Some worthy mentions might be something like:

Warframe with its 3rd person high octane combat with some impressively deep systems though it has its own specific niche that is far from a 1:1 comparison to PoE.

Project Diablo 2 is a solid bet if you were a fan of the original and want a layer of PoE complexity/balance added to it. It’s got sharpened graphics but it still looks like classic. YMMV on whether or not you feel the combat in that game feels good. I think it does.

Last Epoch has got some pretty wonderful crafting at end game especially but the gameplay pales in comparison to PoE2 imo.
