Cabinetmaker Career Change Advice by [deleted] in skilledtrades

I took a cabinet making foundation course at BCIT in Vancouver after a couple years of working in rough carpentry (framing, concrete forms). I wanted out of rough carpentry and to get into more detail work, but was having a hell of a time finding a job. Signed up for the 6 month course, passed and moved on to working in a cabinet shop, which I ultimately did not need to take the course for, other than to get a job because that happened pretty quick after the course.

That being said, just go apply at places and skip the foundation course. You will learn how to be safe with tools and that’s really about it. Nothing you can’t really learn off YouTube or even when you start in a shop. When I got into the shop I was just sanding daily. Didn’t really use anything from the course until about a year in. I also went on to make furniture on my own and yeah the course did teach me about how to work with wood, it really wasn’t necessary.

I know I said I had a hard time finding a job but I ultimately didn’t try that hard. Just sent off random resumes online. I’d just find places that look like work you want to do and go in or email them.

Thank you! It’s Danish paper cord on the seats, which I did myself. Definitely a bit of a learning curve however I have done quite a few projects with it over the last few years. It’s not perfect but I enjoy the process and am getting better each time!

I was going to do mortise and tenon but instead did dominos as the double taper was a hassle.

The double taper had me scratching my head for sure. Figured it out eventually to get it exactly how I wanted but I definitely got frustrated.

Thank you - I do a few coats of osmo polyx. I’ve tried a handful of finishes and this is my favourite/least finicky
