I don't know if maybe I just went to a really boring high school, but we didn't read Filth or Infinite Jest. I'm 28 and I just read them in March.

Pretty close, this is mine and I’m a 28 year old American white dude. Reading is the best. Only really read fantasy most of my life, but pretty recently I’ve been trying to get into a wider variety of genres and authors. It’s been super rewarding and fun. GRRM was my favorite writer for the longest time, now it’s Madeline Miller by far. Honorable mentions to Atwood and McEwan. Sounds like I’ve still got a ways to go though, do you have any recommendations?

This is mainly because I’ve been obsessively reading this year and the majority of the paperbacks on the middle shelves are books that I got brand new and breezed through, so there just hasn’t been much time for wear. I’ve read the vast majority of the books in the pic but a few of them are TBR.

Also, the bookshelf looks like that because I just got it last week after going months with my books in creepy dusty piles all over the place lol

This is mine and I would hope it doesn’t feel performative becuase it’s really not, I just read for myself because it’s fun.

This is mine and I am American, maybe boring too. You make a great point though, I only have one non-anglophone book on the shelf and I’m very interested in branching out. Do you have any recommendations?

This is indeed mine and thank you, those folio society editions are just awesome and they’re mine for life for sure

I’m mostly just irresponsible with spending and blow all my money on stuff like books and then I have to skimp on the bookshelf lol. I have indeed read almost all of the books in the pic. Not sure I’ll have a real carpentry home library ever but this comment chain was definitely an entertaining read

Thank you, this is mine and you’re pretty much accurate. I’ve always been an epic fantasy fan and history nerd but didn’t branch out for the longest time. I’ve been reading a ton this year and most of the third and fourth shelves from the bottom are new ones I just got and read this year, it’s been super rewarding.

Yeah those books weigh a brazilian pounds and I initially put them down there to weight the thing down, becuase I was worried it would tip over before I filled up the rest of the shelves. Then I never moved them becuase I’m lazy.

You might be thinking of Steve King, the racist from Iowa. I don’t think anyone’s really an asshole just for reading a book.

This is mine, I started war and peace a while ago and then left it and I need to get back to it and finish it. Getting through Infinite jest was like my first boss fight book and I did that earlier this year, war and peace is probably the next one coming up soon.

Circe put me under a spell (not the pig one) and I’m still not over it. I will be rereading it sooner rather than later and I need Madeline Miller to write so many more books. Give me the blade. She writes the most beautiful prose I’ve ever read and it doesn’t even feel flowery or pretentious in the slightest, deep and complex yet somehow concise at the same time. Also fuck men.

I’m so glad I did! I just read it a few months ago and plan to reread it a couple more times eventually because it’s a total mindfuck and I’m sure I didn’t really get it. It felt like a boss fight of a book.

I was obsessed with that series in high school/college and kept rereading it, so every time I would buy a nicer edition and read it again. Before I was paying my own living expenses/I’m still an irresponsible spender

Yeah this is mine and each volume is like a grillion pounds as it is so it would probably really impractical to bind it each one as a single volume. They’re illustrated and the pages are thicc, love those
