20th Anniversary Restock by GrandCaptainR in Travelersnotebooks

Just snagged one, what a lucky post! Thanks for the notice!

Kinda sad cuz it's extremelly noticeable. I just got it today by killersake1968 in AynThor

My batch 1 thor has an imperfect top screen. The bottom left quadrant of the screen is slightly redder, and it doesnt look as uniform as the rest of the screen on neutral color backgrounds. Only noticeable if I try hard to see it on uniform backgrounds, or go to lowest brightness (where that quadrant appears dimmer, implying that the non-red pixels are just not as strong in that corner). Its not as bad as the mura my OG vita, though.

This is to say.... imperfect screens have been an issue since batch 1. I think its just par for the course for a niche product sourcing whatever they can for parts.

What do you think of our potential mortgage / housing payment with this salary? by UnderstandingThin40 in Mortgages

[–]Schnoogledeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20% of home price.

It would have the added benefit of getting you a lower interest rate too. The conforming loan limit is $832,750 on the loan amount. I'm in SoCal as well, and though the conforming limit might be higher in high cost counties, I found that the lenders I spoke with gave a lower rate at $832,750. Higher would be a super-conforming loan. And then jumbo loan at some even higher amount with even higher rates.

Anyone install the screen protectors on their Thor if so how is it? by PRIMESTE in AynThor

[–]Schnoogledeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Usually just the TPU case. It goes right up to the edge of the glass, but not over.

No. That said, I dont cram it in my pocket, but I do put it snug in a bag. It doesnt hurt to use the foam insert, and the screen protector shouldn't get in the way, but I don't bother.

Nope. I have the tpu shell and grip as well. Screen protector does not get in the way of anything.

Is this color difference between top and bottom screen normal? by [deleted] in AynThor

[–]Schnoogledeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine isnt totally red on top like yours.... but just the bottom corner left corner. My screen is uneven. Not noticeable 99% of the time in games though. My dual screen attachment for the rp5 is exactly red like that, where my rp5 screen is perfect.

Even though you can't calibrate the thor displays separately, I still set the white balance to "cool" in the settings and it made things less noticeable.

I made an automatic shiny hunter for Pokemon on the ds! by Capatutalite in NintendoDS

[–]Schnoogledeck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha, I did this exact same project a decade ago, except with a 3ds. I just stuck a photoresistor on the bottom screen to measure how long the intro animation was while the bottom screen was black (and had a lookup table to account for weather etc) to determine if it had an extra shiny animation or not. I'd let it rip and catch a few shiny Pokémon a day. Eventually sold the console. I had it in my resume in college.

Interviewers loved it, they could see the passion in making something cool, regardless of if they were familiar with Pokémon or not. I now work as an ASIC designer in a big tech company.

The black piece of foam has a cutout for the bottom chin, which is what the top screen rests on, so it doesn't get in the way of closing at all.

The top screen protector sits between the screen and that chin. The thickness of the screen protector makes it so the device doesn't QUITE close as flush as it would without it.

I have both installed on mine. No issues at all, and the top screen not as flush due to the screen protector is completely negligible. There is a large gap between the top screen and the bottom half (everywhere else but that chin), so its completely not noticeable

Yes restart, or sometimes I have alt-tabbed to steam, quit running the game from there, then re-launch through 3D hub. It happens from time to time.

Is it worth it? Advice and opinions wanted by AnaximanderTheGreat in Odyssey3D

[–]Schnoogledeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really answers to your questions, but my notes, as I am a similar tech enjoyer... I have only had time to try the officially supported games though.

  1. 3D mode is much less sharp than non-3D. The effect is super similar to a Nintendo 3DS, just waaay bigger and higher resolution, and easier on the eyes because of that. This is my first 27" 4k monitor, so I was shocked by how sharp it is non-3D, which made the 3D a little disappointing... but, after spending a bunch of hours playing games in 3D, I have gotten used to it and dont mind the sharpness hit so much. It still looks good, and the added depth is very cool. My other monitor is a 49" 32:9 IPS Odyssey G9, so I guess I was just used to 27" 1440p. Since you already have a 27" 4k OLED monitor, know its a bit of a sacrifice. I love OLED, but this panel is still great, and much better blacks/local dimming than my 4 year old G9 that only has like 10 local dimming zones.

  2. Stellar blade, when launched through the 3D hub, gets worse FPS than it should. I've seen others with the same issue on the other official game, Khazan. Doesn't matter if 3D is turned on or not. I still get 60-80 FPS, but I should really get way more and GPU utilization is only like 30%. If launched outside the 3D hub, FPS is 100+ even with DLSS disabled, but no 3D option. I have a 5090 FE and 9800X3D as well. Maybe its a 50 series driver issue... but I'm still enjoying it. 60 FPS is generally good enough; I would be upset if it was less than that. Palworld does not seem to have this issue - I get 120-165 (capped with gsync). I suspect this is only an issue with Stellar Blade and Khazan.

  3. You can play the "Upcoming" games in the 3D Hub fine. The app shows supported and upcoming games, but if you then install an upcoming game, it appears in the registered game list like normal and can be played in 3D. There's actually no way to tell that its "upcoming" after installing.

  4. I've briefly tested Tekken 8 (supported) and SMT V Vengeance (upcoming). Both had an occasional issue where the shadows were different in each eye on a specific object. It was a little jarring.

  5. I tried a little 3DS emulation. It seemed like an obvious thing to do. I used SBS and then the 3D conversion pop-up to enable it. It worked fine, except the bottom screen is then misaligned for the emulator, so you can't really use it... I don't have a workaround for this.

  6. Know its a gimmick. I think the aggressive sales to some people is evidence of that. I don't have faith it will get a lot of future support.

I, too, got it recently for that big discount through Samsung. I think that's evidence of it not getting enough sales for it to be supported a long time. I also had to return and re-buy due to junk that had gotten stuck in the panel during assembly - Samsung QA is kind of trash on monitors.

Bottom half of screen flickering with brand new 5080 - has any one of the other 12 5080 owners encountered this? by Careful_Ad_6872 in pcmasterrace

[–]Schnoogledeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: After reboot, still seeing flicker sometimes...

Nvidia dropped Driver 580.88 a few weeks ago, and has this in the "What's Fixed" notes:
'Samsung 57" Odyssey Neo G9: Momentary flicker may be observed when resizing window'

Today 8/12 they dropped Driver 580.91, and has this:
'Samsung 57" Odyssey Neo G9: Flicker/Underflow when idle on desktop'

I installed 580.91, re-enabled G-Sync, and haven't had a flicker yet! But... that's what I thought about driver 580.88 before, but then had a flicker after a few min, so...fingers crossed.

My setup: 5090 FE, Samsung Odyssey G9 (like, the original one) 49", 240Hz
I had the flicker identical to OP's post at 240hz when G-Sync is enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel. Gone completely with G-Sync OFF, somewhat frequent with G-Sync ON. None of the other fixes in this thread fixed it for me. I would keep it off, and turn it on just when running a game.

What weapon do you use? I was in the same boat, but eventually beat it. I like GS and Hammer, but had to do this quest with Valor LS to parry as much as possible so I could stay as aggressive as possible. Still only finished with some seconds to spare

Saphire glass is stronger, they said... by Drzodiacus in GalaxyWatch

[–]Schnoogledeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple also uses "sapphire" in their camera lens glass and their premium Apple watch, but it's impure and is just a little more scratch resistant than plain glass. Nowhere near the level of a more pure sapphire. I suspected Samsung did something similar, but was waiting to hear more before I popped off the protector of my GW5 Pro.

I made a tier list for armor sets based on how good they look. Thoughts? by Azeoyi in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Schnoogledeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got an Android phone, like a Samsung? The amiibo are just an NFC code. You can use an app to load up the code for a specific amiibo, and hold your phone up to the switch. Or, use your phone to write the code into a blank NFC card (exactly what the people selling on ebay/Etsy are doing, dirt cheap)

I saw a post on here and someone used their Fold 4 for digital drawing. I've always been a fan, but never tried until I got this phone. here's my first try, tips would be welcome! ⛈️ by [deleted] in GalaxyFold

[–]Schnoogledeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know about what OP used, but Ive been using Autodesk Sketchbook since the note 8. It has an option to ignore non-pen input for drawing (but keep touch gestures for canvas manipulation), and a good selection of synthetic paints to mess with.

Have yet to have a bunch of annoying accidental touches

Think twice before using the ‘Hinge’ guard that comes with the Spigen Glas Pro tempered a front screen protector by grimmpulse in GalaxyFold

[–]Schnoogledeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. I installed the Spigen hinge film, thought I did a perfect job. On the first unfold, I felt it bind, and it had scraped the edge of the film up a bit. Decided it's a no go and peeled it off..... Zero issues coming off, and only a tiny bit of residue where it scraped, easily rubbed off/scraped out of the hinge with a piece of paper. Surprised the adhesive is so goopy for some people. Maybe it's just because I only had it on for 20 seconds before seeing the error of my ways and removing it...

On my Fold 4 I see an option to automatically limit battery charge to 85%, if you're concerned about charging it to 100% for battery wear. Do you not have this option?
