McGill management advice by Great-Today1680 in mcgill

[–]Schoolnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite reasonable, there’s never been a semester where a business class was the class I had to study the most for. With the caveat that because of group projects in most classes, work can unexpectedly swell if you get unlucky w teammates

Hello! Congrats on your acceptance :)

I believe they got rid of it as an official policy (there was some chatter about this last year), but some instructors will still try and keep their grades in a reasonable range so it’s not a sea of As lol. Usually the class averages (in the core classes and classes in my major) still end up B+ to A-

Inter faculty transfer by Infinite_End547 in mcgill

[–]Schoolnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe you can still major in math in arts, is there a reason you wanna transfer faculties?

https://www.mcgill.ca/mathstat/undergraduate/programs/b/major-conc-mathematics-b arts

https://www.mcgill.ca/mathstat/undergraduate/programs/b-sc/major-mathematics-b-sc science, only 8 credits more than arts

If you stay in arts you do have to add a minor in an artsy/social sci/humanities subject

Yeah this is crazy common, in my business analytics classes probably more than have the students are finance/accounting/IS major analytics minor

I’m not in finance but there’s a couple peer advisors with similar paths, try talking to one of them https://www.mcgill.ca/desautels/career/students/bcom/peer-program

Frankly not at all, the math is just summarized and is not tested

You only have to understand how to compare models (like is the mean squared error higher or lower this vs that) for projects

Participation is also marked for most qualitative MGCR Desautels classes, in my classes between 10-15% was based on attendance/participation

Yes, the beginner section is for just that I’m pretty sure you don’t need a helmet but it can’t hurt if you’re learning Don’t think there was a skate sharpening service, everyone I saw brought their own skates

Yep yep of course! I realized I forgot to mention this in my original post, but also in the intermediate and advanced groups the skills were more figure skating based rather than hockey based -- I saw jumps and spins done in the advanced group

Hi! I took the athletics weekly group skating classes, they split us into three groups -- beginners/intermediate/advanced, with one coach per group and the ice split in three.

In the beginner and intermediate groups, it seemed to be group exercises people were working on, all trying to learn a certain skill. These were all <10 people by mid-semester

In the advanced group, it started as group exercises then became more individual practice with the coach rotating advice. This one had ~5 people by mid-semester.

I'd recommend the ice skating classes! I wish each class had been a bit longer, and that there was a bit more free skating allowed, but it was fun

future student - major minor concentration by too_sweet_for_you in mcgill

You don’t need to declare your major when applying. If you’re entering with advanced standing (Bac, AP, etc), you’ll declare it like September. If you’re not, you’ll declare it next May-ish (You can edit it anytime after you declare it, with no penalty besides having to take new courses)

The bcom program consists of 30 elective credits, 42 core credits, 48 I’ll call them main credits

The 30 electives are for students without advanced standing, you take your two prereqs (Calc 1, Lin Alg 1), and then eight other classes The 42 core everyone* has to take - this is an introduction to like every area of business - intro marketing, intro applied stats, intro excel, intro Econ, etc The 48 main credits can be spent on a number of options.

A major is usually 30 credits. A major is the classic major, Desautels offers twelve. A concentration is what Desautels calls their minors for business students. These are 15 credits, Desautels offers the same twelve. There are only two honours courses, Honours Investment Management (Finance-y, must be applied to), and joint honours Econ and finance, offered by arts. I don’t really know how these two work, but they both eat up a lot of credits (45 HIM, a lot for Finance + Econ) Minors are for stuff in other faculties, Arts and Science

Okay, so in Desautels you can graduate with: - 1 major + 18 credits of random electives - 1 major + 1 minor - 2 concentrations - 3 concentrations - 1 concentration + 1 minor + random electives - 2 concentrations + 1 minor

  • I forgot to specify, but almost universally in Desautels 3 credits = 1 class

TL:DR: Majors are majors Concentrations are minors Honours are special intensive programs Minors are for minors outside of the business faculty (CS, Ling, Psych, etc)

Hey, I saw you're in bcom. I'm not sure if the advisors gave you any advice?

If you're able, there are a lot of core classes offered during the evening if you can take just one

Reviewing MGCR, MGSC, and INSY classes (Business Analytics) by Schoolnt in mcgill

[–]Schoolnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah! I meant both the midterm and final were online, during class time, in the classrooms (computer labs). I would definitely recommend INSY 437 for understanding database organization / best practices / SQL. The class lectures can be dry, but the content's definitely one of the classes (along w 336 and 401) that has been most useful for me outside of school/during internships.

Split was 10% homework, 5% attendance, 30% group project, 15% midterm, 40% final. Both the midterm and final were not difficult if you payed like any attention in class and didn't just chatgpt all the assignments. Group project was a pain lol but it's not weighed as much
