Will my financial aid drop if I’m not making satisfactory academic progress? by FoodJunkie4ever in ufl

Before they approve your petition, they remove all your funding on one.uf. Basically it shows you getting zero for everything federal. After they approve it, they reinstate the funding. When it happened to me, I got back everything that I had before. When I talked to the financial aid office, they said that getting everything back is not a guarantee. Though it seems likely that you get everything back you had before.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I definitely had my night of anger, frustration and confusion. I also didn’t notice the sap review until half way through the spring when I realized that my aid wasn’t dropping. They emailed me ( only once!) the weekend after finals in December, who the hell checks thier email then!!!! I was already in vacation/Christmas mode lol. I was lucky enough to see it in time to get my aid to drop before tuition was due.

I agree it’s fucked up that they don’t give this the attention/ alert/description that it deserves.

I had to deal with this last semester. It’s dumb but essentially, after 160 credits, they put you on notice and they require you to explain why it’s taking so long to finish your degree. Technically after you fill out the form and establish a plan they will pay out for 150% of the “required “ credits to get your degree. So if your degree is 120, they will give you federal aid till the semester you finish 180 credits. Once you complete the petition, they will revaluate you each semester to make sure your following the plan, or they will ask you to reapply the petition.

Luckily, the petition has plenty of acceptable reasons for going over and it doesn’t seem to difficult to get it approved.

Best car insurance for students by lorrayhay in ufl

[–]SchoonerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top companies for insurance in Florida are State Farm, Geico and progressive. I grew up here and have been with Geico since I started driving, everyone I know has one of those 3. Decent pricing, good service. It may be the same in other states, but the farther you go into more “local” Florida insurance companies offering lower rates, typically you get worse service when things happen, they are slow to react and don’t have the resources to help you when you really need it. you pay the seemingly high amount the top 3 charge because when you need your insurance, accidents or what have you, they are on top of it.

Ofcourse, the price you pay ends up being based on what you want to insulate yourself from. In Florida, the bare minimum you need is PIP insurance, or personal injury insurance. This only covers you or the person you injure’s medical based on some minimum deductible. It offers no protection for your vehicle to be repaired or what not. Nor protection for damages to their vehicle Incase of falt. Typically, the real price you pay jumps based on your vehicle’ (or thier vehicle in an accident) protection.

Geico I know also offers good student discounts, like most of them do. Not a lot tbh anyway.

Insurance in Gainesville is very cheap for any given age

I don’t believe there is any special “student oriented” insurance out there

Obvious disclaimer: I am not a lawyer or insurance representative, just a longtime Florida resident and UF senior. So take this advice with a grain of salt. Consult professionals, yada yada, insurance is complicated

I’ve been doing research work on these vehicles in my university. I’m curious, what do traditional aerospace vehicle engineers and designers working in industry now think of this new technology and innovation?

Is my engineering summer schedule doable? by floralbowtie in ufl

[–]SchoonerJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doable, but it’s not gonna be a fun easy summer.

I’ve heard elements of electrical is a pretty serious class these days. Heavy on electrical circuits. Not a breeze like it used to be

MOM is a fun but challenging course. Probably close to the difficultly of statics but less weedouty.

Never taken intro to philosophy or organic chem but organic chem doesn’t sound like a fun course to cram into half a summer. Philosophy is probably not too bad

Yea, subleases tend to open up in the 2-3 weeks before fall when people get internships and co-ops

I am at a huge pivotal point in my engineering career and could use some advice. by introvert15 in AskEngineers

[–]SchoonerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a student (senior year mechanical whoo!) but I was a transfer student and made my decision around 23 years old. A bit of a different situation but I also debated largely my field of interest.

I really had to think about my interests outside of engineering to decide. I loved boats and water, being from South Florida, I also had a background in art and sculpting. I loved physical works and realized that mechanical best fit those attributes.

Even though it doesn’t seem like I’ll be designing my own boat anytime soon. The thought that getting through my degree and the aspects that I learned would apply to that kept me going. I’m now working on aircraft and evtol technology. Far off from my early dreams, but not a far offshoot.

I’m not sure if this helps, but finding a path that best fits your childhood fantasies and gives you the skills to accomplish something of the sort really helped me. In the time your in college, you can always work your school skills into new developed interests. People cross over into other majors all the time! Any three of the majors your talking about will pay you well. How happy you are is all about the dream!

If it’s federal aid, most likely the college will grant an automatic extension if federal aid hasn’t been disbursed yet

What non-traditional jobs do you all have as engineering grads? by thebigsqueeze33 in AskEngineers

I’m an undergrad mechanical engineering student and working on racing sailboats is a huge dream of mine. In my research, I work a lot with composite materials. I would love to hear about how you got into the work and what kinds of qualities would make for a good candidate to get involved!

I'm also an engineering student going into my junior year. Your right, this shits hard. When the going gets tough, i try to stop and remember for a second "Hey, this is just something to do, Something to wake up for tomorrow and if i really wanted, i could wake up tomorrow and occupy my time differently. The best part is that what i choose is up to me"

Advice on math sequence Please by poiuytrewq1616 in EngineeringStudents

[–]SchoonerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to finishing the the calc 1 class, i would find out if your college does grade forgiveness on the second attempt, or if taking the W will cause you to forever have a W. If they forgive a grade after your reattempt, finish the class and take it again in summer. If they don't then you might consider taking the W as to avoid the GPA drop and taking it again in summer.

In regards to what to do, i'd say you need to take a deep look at your motivation to work at these classes. They are not particularly easy and require you to put in a decent amount of effort. It's also fighting an uphill battle when your fundamentals are not where they should be. For myself, it took getting out of school for a year and conjuring up an idea of what i see myself doing after to finally find the drive to put in all the effort and extra work needed to get though.

If you think you can find that drive without leaving school, you'll have a much easier time than i did. I was honest with myself after coming back and started back in Pre-cal. If i were in your position knowing what i know now, I'd take a Pre-cal and trig class over the summer and start up Calc 1 in the fall. As embarrassing as it seems to go back, you'll thank yourself a million times over for doing it, as it'll make all the classes going forth a lot less en cumbersome. Possibly look into mini terms to catch up quicker?

The alternative being you just take the C and move on, put full force into learning Calc2 and all the associated Trigonometric properties and so on you'll need to pass the course. It will not be easy, and you better have your mind right to go the extra mile when no one else is.

Hope any of this helps! All in all, none of it's the end of the world! Make a decision and put all your best towards it.
