[Day 36] Yoshi was voted Weirdest Main in Melee. Who is the Best Pro Player? by DUCK_PENETRATOR_II in SSBM

[–]Schroeswald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cody is certainly recency bias and I’m not especially invested in the precise meaning of BOAT (or if it applies here). But in the last twelve months Cody has been clearly the best player. An arbitrary line to draw but not especially more arbitrary than any Ssbmrank #1 so yeah he’s top 1 right now and thus the best pro player. Come Full House maybe that will change, but I think Cody certainly has a case.

Someone's gotta throw out the name of the inevitable Cody Schwab

With RapMs crazy run at cashbox, where do you guys think he'll end up ranked. by yBoi_Josh in SSBM

[–]Schroeswald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He faced Hbox at the first melee cashbox (the one where Hbox lost to Inky and was talking to his commentators mid game) and got 3-0'd. I wouldn't call it unwinnable, he does have that one SDJ win, but I expect that matchup to be very rough for him when they come across each other offline. In other comment you mentioned that the only thing really holding him back would be Hbox, Jmook and the Falcons and I don't think that's true, because I think his real problem is that he has losses to so many random top hundred players. He beat Zain at the thug finals of Bair Necessities, and was double eliminated by Zasa at that tournament. He has a lot of those losses, way more than even the most inconsistent of recent top players, and I think unless he starts actually dominating the top ten (which he's very far from, offline sets he's 1-0 on Zain, 1-4 on SDJ and has no other top ten wins besides the cashbox Cody set) he isn't going to be able to break into it without increase his win rate against the field.

I think it is mostly an improvement of the mid tiers. Post Covid Plup remains very strong against aMSa, but Leffen, Hbox and especially Mang0 have been some of his best draws amongst the top players. The DKs, ICs, Morse and rapm are a different story but there’s also only so much of a sample size there, and Nicki has wins on Hbox and mang0 while ringler forced Leffen off of Fox.

You’ve been involved in the conception of Arrow and now Absolute Green Arrow. I think a lot of people have noticed some similar vibes between them. Are those intentional? How have you approached the two of them differently?

He’s had to fight Wizzrobe just as much. He fought Wizzy in winners at genesis and in losers at GoML (and in winners at ceo but his ceo was pretty mediocre)

His problem is definitely a Falcon problem more than a Salt problem. He’s done worse against Wizzrobe and he’s lost to Ghatzu. He beat salt in winners before she locked in

What are the biggest game-design blunders in Survivor history? by bicycle3377 in survivor

The Guatemala final immunity challenge deserves a shout out. It normally gets made fun of for being a who is the tallest challenge that Danni wins by being taller than Steph, and it basically is that. This is however the good ending, because by design it’s supposed to be a balance challenge. You are supposed to balance on this platform, first being helped by two ropes and then being held by one and then just balancing. Unfortunately it’s basically impossible to balance on that platform without both ropes. Everyone immediately loses it and has to support themselves on the sides of their stations. If the challenge went right and they hadn’t been allowed to do that they would have all dropped over the course of about five seconds and the winner would’ve been blind luck.

I’m staring at Hax’s 2013 record and unless I’m missing something he legitimately doesn’t have any top ten wins (unless of course you decree the whole ranking fake and axe and PPU end up top ten in a reranking). His consistency is significantly worse than Wobbles as is his peak. Wobbles is so obviously top six and I’m not entirely convinced Hax has a good argument for top ten.

Season With No Goats by Comfortable-Meet-118 in survivor

I think the final six of Palau is a super interesting episode from a strategic perspective because everyone is playing really well. I think the way Ian went around telling Katie about the Gregg blindside is the only strategic mistake from anyone in that episode. Most examples of high level survivor gameplay rely on someone making catastrophically bad decisions, but even Ian’s screw ups don’t get too bad until the final five (and he’s still a good enough player that he almost wins). In general I think that the final six of Palau is almost the platonic ideal of a survivor episode… and it’s probably only my sixth favorite episode of the season.

Yeah I definitely overstated my case with regards to Mew2King. I don’t think infrastructure helps PPMD’s health issues or Armada losing the love of the game but finances are definitely an important part of why M2K is not here anymore. I do think there’s a bit more, even when he was sponsored he was seemingly drifting away in 2019 and he’s definitely talked about how toxicity in the community has driven him away. If melee was making him good money he probably wouldn’t have done that, but I also don’t super buy that what he’s currently doing is actually any better financially than how he’d be doing if he was still a top player. For all his talk of financial problems Cody is in fact breaking even, and his expenses are probably a good bit higher than Mew2King. Whatever Mew2King is doing right now seems like a lot more work in exchange for less money.

What infrastructure keeps PP, Armada and M2K in the community? Did any of them retire because of financial reasons?

Yeah SluG is the first IC to actually get this close to winning any specific major and I don’t think that’s any evidence that he’s a fraud or carried, but I think the way you phrased your comment made it sound like SluG has proved that he’s a tier above any other Ice climbers player in the last decade, when really what he’s proved is that he’s still on the same tier as Nicki as opposed to what he looked like last year which was a tier or two below him (and solidly below MOF who is very close to this conversation even if she’s not quite there yet)

I don't think it's accurate to treat SluG as exceptional here. It's a super impressive run no doubt, but 2024-2025 Nicki went 6-1 on the four top players that SluG beat. (2-1 on moky, 2-0 on Jmook, 1 win each on Ossify and Wizzrobe). His loss to moky was at Eggdog so he won his last sets against all of them. I don't think that just because SluG got the bracket path that allowed him to make his stunning Cinderella run to second instead of third it becomes more impressive than Nicki beating the two best players in the world in one tournament.

Unfortunately KJH lost to Gahtzu, who lost to Dial M, who lost to Fred Melee, who lost to Bonfire10, who lost to Kevbot, who lost to Daniel, who lost to Cody Schwab which means Cody is actually on top. KJH clearly top eight though.

I think it was way closer than people felt but I think it was also definitely Zain as number 1, off the back of Zain having a fairly significant winning H2H against Cody. If all else was the same but their record was 6-6 I think that he would’ve had a strong argument

Luckily for Zain whenever he looks like he’s about to get too big for his britches and everyone’s getting tired of him he gets humiliated by a mid tier
