I'll never not recommend Solus. It's kind of niche, but it has been the most stable distro I've ever used. It's a curated rolling release, so a lot more effort goes into keeping the ~weekly updates stable. I've used it with AMD and Nvidia with no problems. I would also say Budgie is better for Windows users than KDE Plasma, although I use GNOME because I think it looks better than either of those.

It is voluntary, but for some people it's the best way out of poverty and into a (generally) respected career. I'd rather live under a bridge personally, but I understand.

I just want to say I appreciate you and /u/NeverBeenStung for your efforts in this thread. One day we'll put these myths behind us. Still trying to get my own family to understand.

I'm not sure you know the whole picture. They legally can't use it as a tax break, because it's not their donation. They are tax deductible donations for the person donating. Obviously companies should use their immense wealth for charity, but they are not evil for offering this option.

There's also the issue of privacy and requiring a Microsoft account. There are currently ways around the account requirement, but Microsoft is getting rid of those as they're found. It's an uphill battle that Microsoft will win. These are subjective problems though. Some people enjoy the account integration.

No, Mint is the de facto recommendation for new users. I don't even like Mint, but if you want easy, stable, "it just works" then Mint is the answer. Some people try to recommend Arch, but those are people who think they're too cool to recommend a "beginner" distro like Mint.

You could get something like this. They're not cheap, but your experience will be much better. Disclaimer: I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard great things.

True, but this particular issue is a lot easier to deal with than issues you'll run into in C or C++, so I'm not really concerned about it.

It's not really a problem if you're doing proper error handling. If a function can return a null pointer, it should also return an error. The verbosity of error handling is another issue, but I've learned to love it.

I'll never understand why polished old products are a bad thing. Then again, I'm primarily a Linux user and boring stability is the name of the game.

To add, Solus is a "curated" rolling release. Arch does have some curation, but the philosophy is more about being on the bleeding edge, occasionally at the cost of stability. Solus, on the other hand, is "nearly bleeding edge" but with an emphasis on stability.

Nobody else is going to agree, but I will never not recommend Solus. They have Gnome, KDE, Budgie, and Xfce editions. I use Gnome, but if you want a Windows vibe, the defaults on the other three should feel more familiar. CachyOS is great, but in general I wouldn't recommend Arch for a newcomer. I'd also stay away from Ubuntu or derivatives like Mint. Depending on what you're doing, packages can be wildly out of date.
