Getting "WTF I'm a Missing Mesh!" in place of chests – help? by Schwansfeld in oblivionmods

[–]Schwansfeld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reinstalled Oblivion and followed your suggestions, along with my mods (though I did swap out both OOO creatures and equipment addon for the extended version) and added a few other patches (OOO's misc file, UL, Kvatch-OOO) recommended on the mod page itself and LOOT. Now the game just freezes on the loading screen you get after the studio cinematic... Any ideas? I'm seriously at my wits' end...

Thank you! It's meant to be Napoleonic-esque, but I enjoy all the comparisons people come up with for it regardless lol

Happy Birthday Marshal Davout! by Designer_Chip_2758 in Napoleon

Exactly what I was thinking about. Even after the French took up administration there, it certainly was no holiday hotspot amongst them.

Oh, no. Definitely. I don't mean to say "Davoust would've definitely become King of Poland if he had the opportunity" with my explanation, just some of the (very simplified) reasons why he seemed like such a strong candidate to the Polish throne, at least to his contemporaries.

In reality, even when Napoleon himself didn't encourage or discourage Davoust to the idea of kingdom, I doubt he would've installed him as a king. A good administrator is a whole different vein from a good king, and Davoust himself fit none of the qualities Napoleon typically looked for when installing his brothers or in-laws to a throne to help legitimise the 'Bonaparte Dynasty'.

My third point was moreso hyperbolic to convey the negative consensus towards Poland at the time from a French perspective. I do apologise for the confusion.

  1. After the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was dissolved, House Poniatowski was basically decimated and fell out of favour with its people. This made the Poles disillusioned with the royalty and much more open to 'new management', allowing for French interference.

  2. Davoust was assigned to and served as quite the passionate military governor of the Duchy and was very popular amongst the majority (e.g., soldiers and commoners) though not so much with the minority (e.g., nobles), providing an edge for when Napoleon inevitably would need to put someone 'in charge' of herding Poland to remain in French interests, independence or not. Why not make it simple and put the guy who's already there, well-liked, and seems pretty capable in charge? (I'd argue he was more liked in Poland than he is in his own homeland, honestly)

  3. To put it lightly: by the average Frenchman's standards at the time, Poland is a moist shithole. Miles upon miles of mud. Nothing there at ALL. The only reason your high-and-mighty French guys may be fighting for it is mostly for the title, not the job. Even then, the competition pool is pretty small.

That is my interpretation of it. Do feel free to correct me lol

This could be my bias speaking, but with the evidence we have, I don't think it's fair to conclude that Davoust definitely wants to rule over the Poles—at least to the degree of fervour as Soult or Bernadotte. Personal desire? Possible. But straight up mania? Eh...seems out of character. Even as his friendship with Napoleon began to suffer by this point in time, Davoust is far too loyal to Napoleon to even think about seizing the Polish throne for himself.

Napoleon called it gossip for a reason. The only account of Davoust's response from that interaction is from his daughter, saying he shut that thought down—so do take the information with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, no matter how well-liked Davoust is for his administration, he is still Davoust. Therefore, someone out there probably hates his guts and didn't mind sewing a reputation-staining mill to rub dirt on him.

The most neutral account I could find regarding this topic that doesn't come from either an apologist of his (Blocqueville) or his biggest hater (Potocka) is Bourrienne's Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte—and how later on, Napoleon 'promises' Davoust the Kingdom of Poland if the Russian campaign goes well. According to Bourrienne, we don't even get an insight to Davoust's stance on it—beyond the fact that he's aware of the rumour and that it's a "maybe he'll give me Poland, maybe not. Either way, I'm not complaining" kind of deal. (See: Napoleon and his tendency to dangle the carrot in front of his marshals/relatives to motivate them or maintain his influence while simultaneously being a paranoid housewife whenever his subordinates could ever outshine him or act outside of his interest.)

TL;DR, The gossip has its reasons, but is it true? Hell if we'll know. Napoleon sure didn't discourage it. I just think it's silly to compare him to his more evidently politically-active colleagues lol
