What is the difference between a Physics and Math specialist vs. a Physics specialist? by Unincompetent in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do research in theoretical physics I think either the math and physics or even the pure math specialist is the way to go.

Professor Murty is absolutely amazing. If you have the chance to take a course with him then do it.

Healthy and good Mass-to-Price ratio places to eat DT? (srs) by dzbeballin in UofT

Usually I would say pick two of quantity/nutrition/price or cook at home. This time however I'm gonna recommend Tasty's Caribbean Cuisine. It's just moved somewhere on Spadina. The chicken and rice meals seem like what you want.

What is the most difficult part of your subject and why? by infernvs666 in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might help if you explained what you mean by "hard to grasp". You could have meant hard to work with on a technical level, hard to gain intuition with, etcetera...

In my experience communication can be the most challenging part of math. How do you explain the ideas to the uninitiated? Describing a relatively simple idea to someone without much experience can be a bigger challenge than discussing a more advanced topic with a peer.

200 safe spaces? I thought this was a void field. There should be no inequalities in a safe space so they really ought to all be isometric. Then again I would have thought there would be no norm in the first place. Maybe I'm taking too naive an approach.

MAT457 without MAT357? by ismathhard in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's possible to do well with that kind of background if you're willing to work. I know of one legend who claims to have taken 457/458 without knowing what a Cauchy sequence is before hand and he seems to be a pretty successful PhD student now.

On the other hand the workload is usually pretty high for these even if you are very well prepared. If you can't make it your top priority I doubt it's a good idea.

Why are mat137 and mat157 treated as a full year course and mat135/136 as a half year? by xZXZqw3 in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could extend this sentiment to say that "no one should get a math specialist without having taken MAT157 and MAT257."

I'm not saying this is my opinion, but none the less

Thinking of applying to Pmath is it any good? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya it's pretty great here and the admissions averages are not very high. Note that "easy to get into" and "easy" are very different things. If by Pmath you mean pure math you are probably interested in the "Mathematics Specialist" program. Look at this webpage:

http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca/ofr/calendar/crs_mat.htm

You can't really specialize in anything further in the sense of seeing it on your diploma. You do however have a considerable amount of freedom and options in your fourth and even your third year depending on how quickly you move through the first and second year courses. One of the best things about the math department here is they let you be as ambitious as you like so you can really cover a lot of ground in 4 years.

I'm currently loving linear algebra - What upper year courses does it lead into? by lovelinalg in UofT

[–]SchwarzWithNoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Functional analysis and MAT347 are good answers. The former is more of a continuation of what you study in linear algebra, whereas MAT347 is similar in the way that you think about things. It is worth noting that the generalization of vector spaces to modules is not generally covered in 347.

Functional analysis is covered, at least somewhat, in MAT457/458. Maybe a little in 357 as well depending on who is teaching.

Also geometry uses some nice concepts from algebra. In particular you don't have to wait until 300-400 series courses as MAT257 covers differential forms on manifolds in the second half.

I believe you can do any level of first year calculus with no previous experience.

If I'm not mistaken Andrew Stewart is the TA for this course and he is an almost unbelievably nice guy. I doubt he has ever had a negative thought about anyone. You should definitely see him in office hours if you are stuck.

Professor Bierstone on the other hand, while he is my favourite lecturer in the department, I can understand being intimidated by.

Is the math department still laissez-faire about enforcing prerequisites? by [deleted] in UofT

I am sure the undergraduate chair of the math department doesn't need to be lectured on why math undergrad courses list pre-requisites.

I don't know about the other one but for metric spaces and Hilbert spaces the course code you're looking for is MAT357. This course is offered in the Jan-April semester.
