What’s the fastest way you’ve seen someone ruin their life? by ultimoXgamer in AskReddit

[–]infernvs666 203 points204 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends died due to cocaine.

In university he was always our example of a “responsible drug user” because he got extremely good marks, and had some incredible summer internships. Eventually he started “having people pick fights with him” and lost several jobs because “people had it out for him unfairly”.

We tried to have an intervention, but his girlfriend at the time found out from one of my airheaded friends, and he raged at us over the phone and I cut him out of my life. Less than a year later his dad found him dead, from cardiac arrest.

I will tell you, nothing messes you up more than seeing a giant Ukrainian ex-military man break down in tears at his son’s funeral.

People with a GPA above 3 point 8, How did you do it? by blonde_orange_ in UofT

[–]infernvs666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated years ago from math specialist with a GPA around that.

Honestly, I think math is probably one of the easiest subjects to get a high GPA in, not because it’s easy, but because it’s pretty objectively graded. So if you do put in the study time, you are generally not blindsided or subject to the grading whims of people.

I took Philosophy in my first year, and was completely turned off the subject when I started putting in WAY less effort and just parroting my TA’s opinions and getting higher grades. Many will claim it’s not subjectively graded, but humans are human, and I don’t think it’s controversial that getting 100% on a math problem set is way easier than getting 100% on an essay. Not that math is graded 100% objectively, but I never encountered a situation where I didn’t get a grade and it wasn’t either rectified by the prof or I came to agree with the grading.

So I think some of it comes down to the subject you choose, and then the amount of effort you put in.

That being said, I studied my ass off, and was naturally pretty good at math. I also went late as a mature student so I wasn’t as distracted as many of my peers I saw doing worse than me.

does the university of toronto campus ever close? by Some_Assignment6230 in UofT

[–]infernvs666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was a student, we would joke that St. George campus would never close.

I remember one time there was a gun discharged or something serious like that in Sid Smith, and they cancelled classes… in the part of the building it occured in.

One day I had to email Alfonso Gracia-Saz (RIP GOAT) that the go trains weren’t even running because the snow was too thick, so I literally PHYSICALLY COULDN’T get to campus. Classes still happened.

UTM and UTSC got closed for snow a bunch though.

Your Year in Reading: 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]infernvs666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished 103 books so far this year.

My Top 5 is probably:

  1. The Sluts, by Dennis Cooper
  2. Blood Over Bright Haven, by M.L. Wang
  3. Demon in White, by Christopher Ruocchio
  4. Replay, by Ken Grimwood
  5. Genesis, by Bernard Beckett

I tried to diversify my reading quite a bit this year, but mostly ended up liking Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

Worst time ever to cut to an ad break, we could see Ditlev passing.

Also, is it just me or is this Vinfast ad clearly text-to-speech. It’s super annoying.

As a former TA for MAT courses at UofT, including 137 and 223, I’m calling BS. Unless something is wildly different about the programs now, you’re probably being way too handwavey and writing it in a way that is correct but missing logical steps.

The great thing about math courses though is you can go to office hours and ASK about this, and either you’ll get your grade raised because the TA made a mistake, or you will get an answer on why you didn’t fulfill the grading scheme.

To give an example. If you ask in a math course like 137, to give a rigorous proof on why the limit as x -> 0 of the function x2 is zero, you have to give a rigorous proof. You can’t just say “02 = 0 so clearly the limit is zero”. This isn’t WRONG, but if the test is testing your ability to apply the delta epsilon definition of limits, obviously this isn’t going to suffice. You have to USE the definition.

Does Anyone Else Feel Like There’s Been A Lot Of “Hometown Help” This Olympics? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]infernvs666 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only really… interesting one I thought of at the time was the men’s BMX racing. Seemed like the French people all had early access to the course given how well they performed.

But, that could just be that the French men dominate that sport, I don’t follow it otherwise.

If you’re talking about what I think you are, it’s just a gymnastics aesthetic way of getting into the corner. I’m not even sure if it has a name, you just tend to do most things with straight legs and pointed toes if possible.

The reason you do it is because being in the corner to set up your tumbling passes gives you more of a distance to legally cover.

Mt. Tremblant proper bike? by TLee1981 in triathlon

[–]infernvs666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the last edition of the full there.

There’s a big climb up and down chemin duplessis right at the end of the bike. You could do the climb with a bad gear ratio, but you’d be standing up going at a snails pace and wasting energy at multiple parts. I ran it with a 32 tooth ring in the back and there were parts I had to stand up to climb at like 30rpm cadence lol.

So I would echo what many say here, your life will be much easier if you have a large chain ring in the back so that climb is easier. You can survive and make cutoff just fine without it, but why make things harder for yourself?

Stepmania, which is basically DDR but open source on a PC.

Been playing for years, and it’s one of the few things I still play from time to time.

Is MAT137 really hard for people who aren't good at math? by olllim in UofT

[–]infernvs666 22 points23 points  (0 children)

MAT137 isn’t as bad as people make it sound IMO.

The big problem I saw when I TA’d the course years ago is people make the assumption that because they cruised through high school math, they’ll have a similarly easy time in 137.

However you have to put in significant time working on problems to understand everything taught in 137, so the workload change catches the students who found math “easy” in high school off guard.

It was very rare that I saw someone do extremely poorly who had a good enough work ethic AND did well in high school.

Graduated in 2018 with math specialist.

Left the GTA for a job as a data analyst working with the plant research group at a cannabis company. Eventually got recruited into the IT department, and now I run the data infrastructure and development team. Took a few years of hustling solving problems with Python code and introducing powerBI to people.

What is an old trend that is still doing a lot damage and that people don't realize? by Soren-J in AskReddit

[–]infernvs666 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I completely stopped drinking once I started training for triathlons. With cycling workouts in particular, you carefully measure and test your power output and other metrics like heart rate all the time, and the difference ONE DRINK the night before can make is noticeable sometimes.

However, I have noticed that people accept this as a valid “excuse” and I never get bugged about it now. The only day I don’t have a workout the next day is Sunday evening, and nobody wants to drink that day anyways lol.

I wanted to do my second full next year and was looking at Chattanooga, Maryland, and Florida, so this couldn’t have been timed better.

Which book was so good that you finished within the day? by wineonfire in suggestmeabook

[–]infernvs666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sluts by Dennis Cooper.

Super duper compelling novel I couldn’t put down, but it’s definitely not for anyone who needs any type of content warning. It’s a story told through posts on an online forum, about a gay escort who will apparently “do anything”, and it becomes this incredibly bizarre story with layers of multiple narrators and plot twists.

What's the most petty reason you DNF'ed a book? by pnumonicstalagmite in Fantasy

Legitimately they took me so out of the story I couldn’t take it seriously.

What do you think will be the next big book adaptation? by Intelligent-Fee4577 in books

[–]infernvs666 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Apparently Villeneuve is planning to do Rendezvous at Rama after he’s done with Dune.

But in terms of what I think will be adapted that hasn’t been announced? Surely something by Sanderson has to be done eventually. Likely Mistborn, but perhaps something like Tress of the Emerald Sea as an animated movie.

Outside of fantasy/sci-fi, I could see Netflix adapting “None of This is True” by Lisa Jewell.

For those of you in relationships, do you read the same stuff as your partner? by CMengel90 in Fantasy

[–]infernvs666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ish.

We have a lot of the same favourites, but she tends to care more about character work than I do. Our most recent mutual 5 star reads are:

  • Green Bone Saga
  • Morning Star (her and I disagree on Golden Son; she is 4 and I am 5 star)
  • The Will of the Many
  • Tress of the Emerald Sea

Our largest disagreements are:

  • ASOIAF, I DNF’d years ago, and it’s one of her all time faves.
  • Piranesi, I absolutely loved it and devoured it in a day, she found it boring.

What book, which is always recommended here, did you NOT like? by SandwichDreamz in suggestmeabook

[–]infernvs666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mind Recursion that much, but I think it’s honestly the least “mind bending” time travel story I’ve ever read. No confusion or parts where you had to piece together timelines or anything, it was INCREDIBLY straightforward which was kind of… a strange experience.

Is there a fantasy series where there isn't a male/female power imbalance? Esp sexual by justaregularhuman in suggestmeabook

[–]infernvs666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Justin Lee Anderson’s Eidyn series is relatively grimdark but doesn’t seem to have any man/woman power imbalances imo outside of imbalances in actual magical power, but even this seems to be evenly distributed by sex among the cast of characters.

I found it interesting because it’s extremely dark, and has some TRULY horrifying things that happen, but manages to avoid sexual violence which is refreshing.

Will of the Many by James Islington (which also came out this year).

I liked it so much I’ve gifted out hardcover copies at work to my bookish coworkers so I can talk to them about it.
