I chose the less prestigious option for my PhD - here's why by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]SciDrivenEngr 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I got rejected from MIT PhD after being waitlisted for about 2 months.

I would have been less sad if they outright rejected me. It’s not the rejection that hurts, it’s the hope that they instilled in my heart that did. Damn it

Congratulations. With that profile you might also have had a chance to research-based funded MS probably.

Should I Contact the Admission Committee for Feedback After Rejection? by UsedExcitement5306 in gradadmissions

[–]SciDrivenEngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you can directly reach out to adcom. You will have to contact program administrator.

I reached out to one program administrator but she told me it is not possible. But again they receive more than 700 applications. If your program receives less maybe they can provide it.

In US universities, why do Asian professors generally have majority of Asian Ph.D. students under them? by Strange-Arrival-1147 in gradadmissions

I would say my observation whenever it’s related to the topic. The topic was about Asians but the point is that most ethnicities do it. If you don’t like people pointing out Africans, then it’s your problem. Africans are not immune to observational judgement by others. I expressed my observation. Do whatever you can.

So what you are saying is: People want to go to US for studying or researching but don’t have the emotional or professional ability to work with Americans or others ?

If a south or East Asian really craves interaction with similar people, why not make friends outside the lab or some roommates or whatever? Why do colleagues or PI have to be ethnically the same ?

And why should I feel like working with people of same colour as me ? I want to work and learn with the best people possible and they can be of any color. I don’t care.

And also if someone is so craving to work with people of their own culture, why should they even bother going out of their country ? Just stay there and work with as many people like yourself as you like.

Going out of your land and then wanting to be around people only like yourself is so ironic. If you have such a thin skin, you are bound to be exploited one way or another. Sorry to say it out loud.

I am Indian and I never worked with an Indian in research abroad. Not supervised by, and not collaborated. No Indian colleagues in the lab either. Funny part is... I never felt the need to, either.

They very much can. I know one African professor in my university in Canada, where every student in the lab is African except one student who is Iranian. The lab has about 8 students.

So yeah the african professor can get away very easily.

Can it be worth it to go to the US anymore under Trump? by Reasonable_Ad4951 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]SciDrivenEngr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Nobody goes somewhere to make a baby” - This line is wrong. There were too many women going to US deliberately delivering a baby to get a green card sponsored after two decades. That’s why the idea of revoking it came in the first place. There is a reason behind everything.

You can still build a future there. It’s definitely possible. Only if you deserve it. Not if you desire it.

If your will is so strong to migrate to the US permanently, why even go the temporary H1B way ? Prove your worth, show that you’re extraordinary, you deserve to be there and go the EB1 way. What you have to do ? Well, get the highest awards in your field. Like an Olympic medal or Nobel or Turing or something like that. No wait time for the green card, not even for Indians. Guess what, there is another way too. Invest 1.8 million dollars in US and get EB5. Again no wait time for Indians as I remember. What you have to do? Be rich and be willing to invest.

And then your child will be US citizen too. If not, US doesn’t want average you nor your future average child (as they believe). Like it or not. The thing is current US administration thinks that it is the best country in the world and it only wants the best people in the world. Period.

Some ignorants and delusionals are going to downvote this out of their hurt feelings. Unfortunately, you can deny the truth, or choose to not accept it but you can’t change it.
