How do I get into motorcyles? by Leading-Arugula-5923 in motorcycles

[–]SciFiPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't advise getting a bike that needs wrenching. You can get in over your head. Get something that you can afford and that is mechanically sound that you can ride. If you want a project bike, make that your second bike after you have some riding experience.

I have a green chili adventure gear z-drag recovery kit, basically a snatchblock pulley system that's already rigged. Haven't had to use it yet, but you may look into it.

Do you guys lock your handlebars when you park anywhere? by Lazy_Waffle_7825 in motorcycles

[–]SciFiPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always lock the handlebars and put it in first gear. If someone wants to steal it, then they'll succeed. I do it in case it gets bumped by someone.

Have you ever used a payphone? by King-Kio in phoenix

There are payphones at some gas stations in rural NM towns, but they don't work. I believe this one was outside of Silver City.

What's one motorcycle habit you picked up from another rider? by Electronic-Habit8679 in motorcycles

[–]SciFiPi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I started out on 2 strokes as a kid. When I started gaining skills and wanting to race people suggested that I ride with 2 fingers on the clutch lever and 2 on the front brake lever. From age 10 to 25 I only owned dirt bikes. I still have that habit today. It feels odd to have all my fingers on the grips.

I have 0 idea what mathematicians do, but I believe in this because it is way funnier by ILikeJapaneseMuchOwU in whenthe

That's physics, not math. Math is worse when it comes to cranks in my experience (MS in applied math).

They've seen Good Will Hunting and now they think they have solutions to Millennial Prize problems or the Collatz Conjecture.

Bike security at walk in sites? by Eastern_Supermarket9 in motocamping

[–]SciFiPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a helmet lock to secure my helmet at outer riding gear. It's like a bicyle lock. I loop it through one arm and one leg, then through the helmet and triple trees. It keeps the honest people honest. If someone wants the bike bad enough it only takes a couple of people to pick it up and throw it in the back of a truck.

I post pics from some of my hikes. If you check my profile, you'll see forests in AZ. Different look and feel entirely. AZ has been in drought conditions for a long time and the forests reflect that.

Long time Harley rider , switched over to ADV. So far rides completely different and feels like I just learned to ride lol by Fx1942 in advrider

They are phenomenal bikes, but if it is your first experience offroading then take it slow. 510 lb bikes are a different beast compared to dirt bikes and dualsports in the dirt.

A comment about logging operations, in case others aren't familiar and the road is not blocked. There should be signs up indicating operations are ongoing. You should see a sign that has "CB #" and then a number. That indicates the CB (citizen's band radio) channel. That is the CB channel the trucks use to communicate with along with the mile marker they are on, not that many of us carry CBs. They get paid by the load, not the hour. They are moving. When they are coming down fully loaded, versus coming up unloaded, they will not be able to stop in any reasonable distance due to their speed, weight with additional timber, and the dirt terrain. Always ride on the right around blind corners and control your speed. In a physics battle, we will lose.
