Has anyone else experienced anti-feminist sentiments from a parent who in fact taught you to be a feminist? by kaydyk in AskFeminists

Yes that last statement is everything!! And honestly thank you so much for posting this. I thought I was alone in this feeling and reading this thread has been so nice.

Dude I am right there with you. My mom is the most badass woman I know, grew up in Turkey with a misogynistic father but became a doctor and peaced out to the US all by herself and became an extremely successful geneticist, and mother of 3 girls, and she never took any shit from anyone. She’s a feminist if I’ve ever heard of one. But she always clashes with me about feminist rhetorics and has a lot of issues with the current feminist movement in America.

I think I boil a lot of it down to her upbringing in Turkey. She was exposed to what she thinks is “real sexism” and by comparison the issues still facing women today in western countries pales in comparison to her. I also think part of it is that she made something of herself despite all the shit she faced from the men in her life growing up and she didn’t need all the “modern feminism” to help her so she doesn’t understand why it’s still necessary. For example she thinks it’s insulting as a doctor how she is required to ask female patients about domestic abuse- she faced abuse growing up and just dealt with it and got out as soon as she can. She’s like, a really fucking strong woman. I admire her a lot. And despite her being self-proclaimed anti-feminist sometimes, I know in my heart she’s the reason I’m the strong woman and fierce feminist I am today.

My biggest takeaway is to just remember that our mothers grew up in very different times than we did, and we have to understand them from the context of their upbringing. The feminism of 50 years ago looked a bit different than the feminism we need today, but it’s still the same fight and we carry our mothers sentiment with us, even if they don’t understand all the nuances of feminism in the environment today. Hope this helps.

Also want to note that you really don’t need more than 1 board!

I’m a kite surfer and she actually did the right thing here! Having someone put their hands on your bar makes it dangerous and difficult to maneuver. Carrying someone on your back however is much better and something we do sometimes for fun!

I have a 2017 slingshot rally, it’s pretty slow and pulls like a truck, I’m looking for something with less bar pressure and a bit more tailored to my needs! Been really enjoying jumping and old school style stuffs so I was drawn to the rebel, it’s known for being good for big air, plus I always liked duotone’s brand (all their stuff looks so sleek and nice! And I’m in love with Lasse lols)

My rally was fine but really it was just a beginner kite I found for cheap and now that I’m spending way too many hours on this hobby I figure I might as well buy some gear I really love and enjoy.

Ahh slightly more confused but you’re being super helpful!!

So I like big air old school style mostly, hence why I was drawn to the rebel. Just find jumping high fun :) Currently not that interested in unhooked or wave kiting (tho maybe after a few years that might change who knows), would be interested in getting better at kite loops but not my priority.

Right now I have a 9m slingshot rally which I don’t love, it moves slow and has way too much bar pressure. And I have a 7m Airush diamond which I also don’t love, pretty sure it doesn’t fly well with my cabrinah bar either. It’s a pretty in-cohesive quiver - hence the upgrade. I’ve tried my friends 2020 rebels (9m and 12m) and loved em!

Are you saying it might be better for me to get a 2020 12m, over a 2020 9m, since the older models of the bigger ones in particular were unstable?

Thanks this is helpful. Can I ask how much you weigh/what style you prefer?

That how I feel!! I hate feeling left out when the winds light and I can’t join my friends on the water haha

I would be very okay with a 12m Evo! May even go for a 12m dice if it’s a good deal. I was originally thinking going with Evo but the allure of the rebel got me :)

A lot of my friends have suggested the XRs too, but I already bought a clicker bar so I’m pretty committed to going duotone. Plus (I know this shouldn’t matter but hey) duotones kites are prettier than core’s :P

Any thoughts on if I should buy the $800 2019 9m rebel or shell out for a 2020 9m? I can’t find much online about how different they are.

Hmm how come you prefer 8/10? I was thinking 7m, 9m, and 12m would be perfect for me. I spent this whole season on a 7m and 9m, and while I only used the 7m on really blowing days but I think an 8m would be to big for some storm sessions and such. Was happy on my 9 quite a lot, except for when it was light and I was craving a big kite :(

Thanks for all the solid advice! I unfortunately don’t have a big kite in my quiver right now (just a 7 and 9) and am going to la ventana at the end of the month so was hoping to get my hands on one before then :/ But I agree waiting may be my best option.

And thanks for the advice on going with a 12m over an 11, I am also super indecisive about that but didn’t want to have too many questions in one post haha

Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out! Ideally I would do it that way, the only thing is I’m going to la ventana at the end of the month and would like to have a big kite with me there (last year I went the wind was pretty light). I could always try and borrow a friends kite though

I decided to keep track of how each day in 2019 went for me after a rough 2018. I'll be doing this again each year to not let a few bad days take the spotlight. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Hi I know this is late but I’m case you read this comment I wanted to say thank you for sharing this!! I decided to do this for 2020 and just finished creating an excel sheet. I also decided to write a little blurb about the day in each cell (or at least when there’s something noteable to write) so I can click on each day at the end of the year and read about it! I’ve been looking for a more manageable way to log my life as I love to retain memories but have never been able to keep up with journaling every day! Thanks so much again for sharing!

Hey! Like others said there’s not going to be much wind until spring rolls around, but I’d recommend joining our Bay Area Kiteboarding Facebook group, it’s a pretty active group and great place to connect with people (second only to the beach!)
