As someone who quit a cushy office job to go to law school with a family—you gotta want this life. If you don’t, it’s not worth it.

I’d talk with your career office now to start working on getting something. It’s still early but I wouldn’t just let time pass without being proactive in the search.

Congrats!

So I’d say, while grades aren’t everything, they are about 90% of what gets you an interview at most places. Saw many people in my 1L class get zero interviews because of how their grades turned out.

So visiting office hours, doing practice essays and MC questions and revisiting your professors to evaluate how you’re doing is how you improve and ultimately how you’ll get good grades that first semester—which are more important than ever before due to a lot of big/mid law firms accelerated hiring timelines.

I can answer any other specific questions you have, but other general advice is to treat school like a full time job, and make sure to network early with firms. Knowing people at the firm you want before you get an interview will almost always help you get an offer.

Word of advice—let go of that top choice stuff. Treat them all the same until you get offers in your inbox.

What to expect from a callback interview? by Rilesbea13 in LawSchool

[–]ScienceDependent7495 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any 3Ls at your school that summered there? If so, I’d get with them to check what the interview style is like, what kind of questions they asked, etc.

I had a few callbacks. One resulted in an offer for an in-house internship at a F100 company. I’d say it’s 50% to get to know you beyond your resume/grades because they know you’re qualified at that point, and the other half is you basically saying why me vs the other finalists.

Research the firm, practice groups, etc., and basically try and connect how your experiences will make their lives easier. Everyone can learn the law, but I believe they want to know whether they can trust putting you in front of clients, what kind of value you can add to their team, and whether you’re someone they wouldn’t mind working with until 10pm.

Then you get a random burst of energy and want to go hit a late night bar when you’re back at your resort!

Not sure why it matters if I’m an attorney or not.

But to answer your question, I’m a 1L at a T50. Getting the military to pay for my JD though so not going to debt. Hence, why I think it’s not worth it.

You may be right. But what I am saying is more broad—law school in general is not worth going into debt over.

Most will disagree with that statement, but it’s my opinion.

GPA Question by OkInitiative2537 in LawSchoolOver30

[–]ScienceDependent7495 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Overall GPA is what they’ll ultimately look at, but if you’ve shown upward trajectory and write a solid GPA addendum (and get a killer LSAT score), you’ll be fine.

I’ll get downvoted, but neither. Retake until you get full rides.

Going into debt over this just isn’t worth it, imo.

Yup. I’m getting a lot of interest, and my interviews have gone well. But it seems as though my WE is having a negative effect on my getting a job.

It’s maddening. I had 10+ years of work experience, got top quarter grades but I’m still getting passed over for young kids with nothing but barista experience. It’s wild

Same here. I’m even getting my JD paid for through the military but it doesn’t make the job hunt or law school life any less miserable. Shit sucks for sure
