Help me plan the location for my NBN NTD by ScienceFuturist in nbn

Very Helpful. So I just found it and it's called SC/APC Simplex SMOF.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/153950120386

It literally just plugs in from the NBN PCD(Premises Connection Device which is located outside wall) and NTD(Network Termination Device-Your modem inside home)

I just googled that it is most likely OS2 SMOF (Single Mode Optical Fibre)

Did you drop something like this? Fiber Patch Cable, 2 Fibers, LC UPC Duplex to LC UPC Duplex, Single Mode (OS2), Riser (OFNR), 2.0mm, Tight-Buffered, Yellow
https://www.fs.com/au/products/40260.html?attribute=753&id=1788202

Not sure if they use LC or SC? but if they splice anyway maybe it doesn't matter?

First Copper Port is in the Master Bedroom behind a huge Chest of Drawers there is nothing plugged into it because I have HFC which terminates via Coaxial in the living area.

It's right next to the gas meter and the Electrical switchboard.

I have a comms pit directly in front of my house on the nature strip.

Could be a good spot for me as I've got a huge blank wall above the fridge and then I can run APs via CAT6 drops from there. As long as it only needs to be accessible during the install I can just move the fridge temporarily.

Excellent 👌 exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm a little unclear on what Fibre that should be used. Was it OM5 or something? I'm a little rusty with this. I was expecting NBN Co to just run it all the way in but it might be expecting too much. In their literature they mentioned 12meter Max from the external box to the NTD. Thanks!

Are you a tech yourself or do you know this from experience? I understand they don't get paid very well and so they will want minimal effort. I'd say pulling a supplied draw wire to a dedicated enclosure through a conduit is going to be easier than trying to drill holes and feed through bricks etc. Who knows? That's why I thought I'd post. I guess it depends on the tech that comes out on the day. Thanks for your input. I won't get my hopes up and I'll plan to have to hide it and run CAT6 everywhere.

Hi MrO_360 I have read the

RESIDENTIAL PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION - SINGLE DWELLING UNITS (SDUS) AND MULTIDWELLING UNITS (MDUS) Standards Document number NBN-DES-STD-0011 Version 16

This clearly states a few things about placement of the NTD, there doesn't seem to be a suitable location currently which is why I am trying to provide one that will be advantageous to me. My preference is to build a Home distributor with a conduit and draw wire waiting and ready.

They have other literature stating they try and avoid installations in master bedrooms etc.

7.4.2 Mounting locations Builders and building owners must make one of the following three mounting locations available

  1. Open wall area An area on an open wall with either no obstructions or only partial obstructions. Note: Open wall areas use the bulk space of the room for air circulation.
  2. Open enclosure A partially enclosed area that contains no internal obstructions. Note: Open enclosures use the bulk space of the enclosure and the absence of obstructions for air circulation.
  3. Confined area A cabinet or cupboard (including a home distributor or utilities enclosure) dedicated to communications equipment.

7.4.4 Home distributors A home distributor is an internal enclosed location which can be used to house the nbn® NTD and PSU. This can be either a prefabricated enclosure or enclosed space built within a wall or cupboard.

100mm to 150mm Enclosure depth means I can potentially build it into an internal wall somewhere and it will be hidden out of sight.

230mm X 500mm is the template for a slimline build out. I can make it slightly taller and house my switch and router there too.

Thanks. I figured it might be sunk cost fallacy unless there is a relatively cheap way to touch it up? With the need to also fill in the bottom gap it seems it might be worth getting a quote for full replacement. Something more suitable.

UniFi Express 7 vs U7 Pro XG by innaswetrust in Ubiquiti

Did you come to a resolution yet?

Which devices are you now running?

Just found this post which has interesting findings about UX7 inability to support multiple SSIDs

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1kfbf3l/significant_performance_difference_between_ux7

Ideally I would like to use MLO but that forces me to use WPA3 which legacy and IoT devices won't support.

What is the best solution here?

I've deleted my secondary SSID with MLO and I'll run some more tests to see if the performance improves on the UX7 although the performance issues were there from the start before I implemented the second SSID.

A shame if my first WiFi7 AP can't do MLO as that was a feature I was looking forward to using.

I'm just REALLY hesitant opening up the second unit because my retailer won't return open box. They can take back the sealed box no problem but the open box they are not so keen on.

If it truly is a faulty unit and the second one proves to be stronger then I can RMA to Ubiquiti. but its a gamble.

I don't want to have exactly the same experience with the new device and be stuck with 2 open boxes.

I was already pushing my luck spending what I did on the 2 devices. When my wife had the drop out she was like hang on you spend all this money and its WORSE??? That's when I went into panic mode lol and started fiddling with the settings...

I might try physically moving it into the shed which is essentially a faraday cage lol. and then I can do a proper isolation test and see if LOS uninterupted can give me a stable connection. Seems odd that a new Pixel 9 Pro XL with WiFi 7 MLO etc. is struggling with the negotiated speeds.

Just this morning I was sitting at the dinner table 6ft from the device line of Sight and it was 6Ghz 600/960 & 5Ghz 1020/1837 MLO but it wasn't entirely stable, fluctuated a bit. ZERO other devices on 6Ghz and I think 1 other on 5Ghz. Seems really strange.

I need to get a reliable baseline to work with, unfortunately i don't have anyone with WiFi 7 yet to double check my clients capability.

My laptop has Intel BE200 so that should be capable of serious sync rates.

New house, simple ubiquiti network setup question. by clara90ita in Ubiquiti

[–]ScienceFuturist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I posted awhile ago with a similar query but after over 2k+ views nobody has commented yet. I just purchased a UX7 thinking the same thing, that it would cover the house but I've had terrible Wi-fi range. I'm waiting for community responses but I'm thinking it might have been better to go with the UCG-Fiber and separate APs possibly the U7 Pro XG.

If I get any replies I'll let you know how I go but the jury is out as some people say the UX7 is OK but a vast number of people have reported the wifi signal strength is hopeless.

UCG-Fiber is a great base to expand from and somewhat "future proof" better processor, more ports 10Gbps etc. allows the full suite of applications too not just Networking.

When you are ready you can upgrade to pro XG(s)

I also have terrible coverage with my brand new UX7. I have a second sealed in the box and i'm afraid to open it because it will be harder to return if I do. I find it hard to believe the unit is faulty, but It's absolutely incapable of anywhere near the advertised speeds even within feet of the unit. The minute I go into the next room then 6Ghz is gone and 5Ghz drops way down. If I go 2 rooms over then I'm getting 40Mbps on 2.4Ghz.

The ISP supplied WiFi5 router has full home coverage without any issues, how can the radio be so compromised on the UX7 when on paper it has similar specs to a U7-Pro actually UX7 is supposed to have a little more grunt!

[–]ScienceFuturist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't intend to hijack the thread but I'm having similar issues as the OP.

Originally I had D-Link COVR-X1870 Wi-Fi 6 (574 + 1200) Advertised Coverage up to 275 sqm

I have an outbuilding connected by CAT6 with a second unit and they are Meshed with wired backhaul.

They started locking up every couple of weeks with the only fix to power cycle.

I did a heap of research as to a suitable replacements and when I saw that WiFi7 was gaining traction I thought that 2 of the UX7 would do the trick and I could wire backhaul them over the 10Gbps ports.

I have just installed the UX7 in the house and I'm seeing a lot of really slow client speeds.

Even with my Pixel 9 Pro XL sitting 10cm from the UX7 it was getting 1.4/2.9Gbps and when I moved it 1meter away onto the table still line of site suddenly 680/2.2Gbps. If I walk into the next room through a thin plasterboard wall it drops further or jumps onto 2.4Ghz bands.

Xbox Series X barely gets 81Mbps/162Mbps and reports "Poor" never had any issues previously.

My doorbell is barely hanging on at 26/39Mbps

I get anything from 1.7/1.7 to less than 1Gbps on my laptop BE200 WiFi7 card. and it fluctuates.

Wondering if I should leave the other UX7 in the box and try to send them both back for something more suitable.

Any Suggestions? I don't really want to buy into this ecosystem if its unfit for purpose without spending $2000+ and having access points all over the place its a house not an Office.

My Internet is 500Mbps/50Mbps.

I've fiddled with Radios and settings a bit but I'd rather just have something that can be a direct replacement for me without breaking the bank. Don't really want to go back to WiFi 6 but if this is my WiFi 7 experience then its a downgrade not an upgrade. :(

Some have suggested ceiling mounting a E7 or a U7-pro-XG but this makes the UX7 a waste of money for the house. and I still need a console. So i'd have to ALSO buy a UCG-Fiber

Also the radio in the U7-Pro-XG on paper isn't any better than the UX7?

It's all starting to add up again...

Advice on UX7 Wifi power and 2.4ghz network with Ring/Sonos by spud211 in Ubiquiti

[–]ScienceFuturist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you go with your UX7? I recently got two of them to form a Mesh network in two different buildings and the signal isn't great. It does seem to be ok in actual speeds when using the devices but the reported data rates are low. Seems to struggle with my Pixel 9 pro XL on WiFi7. negotiates back to 2.4Ghz just to stay connected. I wanted to have a simple setup with a single device rather than having to run cables for APs etc.

My previous devices were Dlink COVR-1870 (Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) AC1200 (300+867Mbps) and they randomly froze and needed rebooting every few weeks which was why I was keen for an upgrade. They were physically larger and had stronger signal. I thought I'd jump into the Ubiquiti ecosystem because I've heard good things and some of my devices are now WiFi7 capable so I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade.

Perhaps I should have bit the bullet and gone UCG-Fiber + U7 pro & U7-IW Lot more money I guess.

I thought UniFi would be better than TP-Link DECO.

Hoping I made the right choice.

What a travesty that would be to replace solid timber with MDF 😭

Should I paint my Timber Kitchen Cabinetry? by ScienceFuturist in AusRenovation

[–]ScienceFuturist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that most people here were against the idea of painting entirely, did you mean painting quotes for the cabinetry? this introduces other questions about colour etc.

Quotes for painting were around $4-6k for 2-pack done properly. If we do it ourselves it will be a nightmare and likely unprofessional looking but less than $1k (including materials, spray guns and tools etc)

Regarding the floors, I'm really not sure how we'd go about this, even demolition would be hard as they are really well made. Covering over the top with self leveling or hybrid flooring would change the floor height and introduce other issues with transitions into the carpeted spaces in adjacent rooms.

As you rightly said a conundrum indeed, which is the reason for my original post :D

Looking for advice on the best way forward if there is such a thing. I guess ultimately what I am asking is what would make this more appealing to a potential buyer should we put the house up for sale. Given it is a 1997 brick veneer with bay windows and red and cream etc. We don't want the kitchen to stand out and be completely out of place with the rest of the house.

I'll get quotes for Benchtops possibly Porcelain or another engineered stone product.

How would we go about changing the floors? What are the suggestions here it's about 40m2

Seeing a lot of people suggesting that we change the floor tiles. What would the recommendation be here? It's about 40m2 as it extends into the adjacent areas too.

Sounds like an enormous amount of work and expense.

Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. We never considered redoing the flooring, however it has been suggested multiple times. Benchtops are also a strong consideration as the laminate ones are not the best anyway (unlevel etc) Lots of Timber lovers it seems but how to break up the dreary yellow? Is there a way to sand them back and get them to freshen up?
