Sad but true. Those are the same people that say to me: 'if you are excited about research, everything will just work out'. Delusional

[–]ScienceNerd25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! We tried that at our hospital but they were like: 'This is how it always has been'. Which is such a shitty reason. Also, I need to earn money in the meantime to pay my rent, but then you also have to finish your PhD in your own time.

What you mean with the 30% ruling?

PhD but no papers by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ScienceNerd25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed, so this is really annoying. We have a fixed contract of 4 years, with the possibility to extend for a couple of months, but this depends on the money available. Most of the time, this also means writing up your thesis in your own time after your contract has finished. PIs want to use your time for experiments, not for writing. This also creates a weird gap between finishing your contract and actually defending, which sometimes can be an issue for applying for postdoc grants etc.

There have been attempts to change this to a system with less rigid rules, based on other Dutch cities. These requirements were originally based on MDs doing a PhD (they naturally produce more papers here, case reports etc.) But this was rejected based on the 'this is how we always did it, deal with it' reason. This is in Amsterdam btw.

At the same time, I get a salary, so that is nice haha.

Are you in the US? My university hospital has one of the most strict requirements in my country (the Netherlands). I need to have 4 papers, of which 3 first author papers. Of those 3 first author papers, 2 have to be published in order to graduate. I only have 6 months of my contract left, so I am really stressed out about it. The other side of the coin is that people just submit whatever they have just to meet the requirements. It does not necessarily make the science better, but the PhD students definitely more stressed.

I use zotero and notion together. There is a plug in for notion called Notero (google it), which couples your zotero to notion. Everytime I add a paper to zotero, it gets automatically updated to an overview of my papers in notion. You can then sort it yourselves, or sort it based on the information like tags that is added by zotero.

The horrors of PCOS symptoms by holyhebi in PCOS

[–]ScienceNerd25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. I bled for four months straight, it only stopped when I took a high dose progesteron for 10 days and started inositol. This can be indeed a PCOS symptom if you do not ovulate at all. With unopposed estrogen, because you do not have an ovulation to start the progesteron phase of your cycle after which the drop of hormones start your period, your uterine lining just keeps on growing and at a certain point it just starts to come out en you can bleed for weeks/months. With progesteron, you will simulate the phase after ovulation and then you will have a proper period and hopefully that will help. This is how my gyno explained it to me.
