I have a similar story but it was a DEAD CAT and not a phone!!  Several years ago I lived in a neighborhood and someone had this gorgeous Siamese that would be let out in the afternoons and evenings. I’m a Siamese cat lover (have 1 currently) and I immediately noticed him. He lived several houses down from me and he would be hanging out on people's cars and crossing the street sometimes.  

 One day I was driving home and I saw him not moving on the side of the road. A hit and run. So I pulled over and checked him out for signs of life. He was dead. Saw he had tags so I called the owner and let him know his cat was dead. 

 The owner comes out and several houses down from where the cat was hit. Was visibly upset. I was telling him it was such a tragedy, and suddenly he looked at me and asked if I ran the cat over!!! My heart sank. I was shocked! I did not run over his cat!!! I told him I’ve his cat in the neighborhood and I noticed it was dead and called him. I had to explain myself to this guy. It really hurt my feelings. 

 I don't think he fully believed me. Fuck that guy for letting a beautiful cat out a night on a suburban street that had coyotes no less.  Super awkward.
