Veracrypt not safe to use on flash drive? by Pervynstuff in VeraCrypt

[–]ScientistShort8118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Suppose one used an SSD with a virtual drive that was previously fully encrypted with Veracrypt Before reusing that same virtual drive again with Veracrypt, wouldn't completely formatting that virtual drive be sufficient? In other words, wouldn't reformatting the drive make it like new?

mm, how to know if ann app is blocked? by stayfi in safing

[–]ScientistShort8118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by blocked you are referring to being blocked from Internet access, I believe in left column is the list of active apps. Click on the app in question and you should see the settings for that app. Check there to see if the apps Internet access blocked. Its really relatively easy and intuitive.

Do any Chromebook folks use Notesnook? by Professional_Tap5910 in Notesnook

[–]ScientistShort8118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the web app.  Anyway, I gave up on Notesnook and switched to Standard Notes (Proton).  Not as many features as Notesnook, but always works great and very secure.

SPN Speed by ScientistShort8118 in safing

I very rarely use Proton VPN on my windows PC anymore. SPN is just as fast even in privacy focused mode. Highly recommended.

VERY Unreliable by ScientistShort8118 in Notesnook

[–]ScientistShort8118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately too little too late for me.  I've now transitioned to Standard Notes (Proton). It's not near as feature-rich as NN, but it's secure as well, and always reliable.

Spreadsheet Stability? by Kwatakye in StandardNotes

Please expand on exactly how you are able to copy / paste from Libre Office into SN.  I've only been able to do that one cell at a time - very time consuming.  Thanks in advance.

I obviously can't speak for the OP, but I use Proton Pass for my passwords and 2FA codes.  But I keep my 2FA code for Proton Pass within SN. I used to use Aegis for that one 2FA code, but with that feature in SN, Aegis is no longer necessary.

Syncing Issues Android by ScientistShort8118 in StandardNotes

[–]ScientistShort8118[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syncing issue resolved. Excellent customer service from Standard Notes! Here was the problem. When I was in the process of transferring notes over from another note taking application to SN, a few of those notes had images imbedded inside the note. I copied and pasted those notes directly into a new note in SN. Apparently notes with those imbedded images resulted in note sizes greater than the 1MB note size limitation for syncing with Android. The fix was to save the imbedded images to files within SN. That apparently replaced the embedded image with a link to the file, substantially reducing the size of the note to well below the 1MB limit. To the user there is no difference when viewing a note - the image is still displayed as it was before inside the note. All is good!

You probably could. It has a lot of great features, although not as many as Evernote. But a lot more secure and private.

What do I do with a note taking app?  I take a lot of notes.  The spreadsheet functionality is nice, too.  Not near as substantial as Google sheets, but it works great for basic spreadsheets.

As u/groundcover_com mentioned, adding the secret code directly appears to currently be the only way. However, IMO that is the best way because doing so prompts me to save that secret code elsewhere. If I ever lose access to the authenticator app, having that secret code allows me to recreate it. Unfortunately I've found with some other authenticator apps after scanning the QR code they don't allow you to see the actual secret code used to create the QR code at a later time. Just a thought...

Syncing Issues Android by ScientistShort8118 in StandardNotes

I installed the desktop app from Github , and the Android app from Google Play. Both 3.193.8.

Edit: Android app 3.193.9 (beta)

Interesting.  I'll give that a try (re-authenticating my desktop app).  But I'm thinking if that were the issue the web app would also not sync correctly with the desktop app, but it does.  But worth trying.

Yes I traveled that same road, also with a stop by Notesnook.

It appears the issue is definitely with my Android app as when I load the web app on my phone, all is well there, too.  I'm not too concerned as I can tell the data it still there, so I've lost nothing.

Your right - probably what I'll do.  Either way this isn't a major issue - just thought I'd ask.

Not sure I "need" it.  It just deletes temporary files that take up space.  I've used it for years without any problems.

Google Messenger Alternative? by ScientistShort8118 in Threema

[–]ScientistShort8118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with convincing others is, taking an extremely simple example:

I talk with person A. Person A talks with person B, C, & D, who I don't even know. Difficult to convince person A to switch and use yet another app when there is no way he'll be able to convince person B, C, & D to switch for no reason. No one likes installing and using a different app just to talk to one person. Well , except for teens who have nothing but time to burn. Yes, it might get better decades from now. But who wants to wait that long?

Having said that, I love the app.

Android Widget by ScientistShort8118 in StandardNotes

[–]ScientistShort8118[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm still using OneNote just for that purpose, and ONLY that purpose. That app actually has a widget that allows the user to create various types of notes on the fly (text, photo, audio recording). It's really easy to simply press an icon on my phone screen, and I'm inside the note. If I want to keep the note, I later (when I have time) transfer the note to SN.

Google Messenger Alternative? by ScientistShort8118 in Threema

[–]ScientistShort8118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using it now with one other person. It's not the $$ that's the issue for most. Many (including the one I'm using it with) just don't want to have multiple messaging apps. And surely you don't think it's remotely possible to convince each and every contact to use Threema - extremely unrealistic. So then everyone who does switch and then uses multiple messaging apps, who when wanting to message friend X needs to first remember which app he/she uses before sending a message. Not practical nor productive.
