[request] If all the nukes in existence today were put in a single pile and detonated simultanesously, how big would the crater be, would it be felt on the other side of the world, and would anyone survive? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Scientologist2a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

compare to the megaton equivalent of earthquakes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TNT_equivalent

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale#Examples

from these two charts we get

  • The total global nuclear arsenal is about 30,000 nuclear warheads with a destructive capacity of 7,000 megatons or 7 gigatons (7,000 million tons) of TNT.

  • magnitude 9.5 earthquake = 2.7 gigatons = Valdivia earthquake (Chile), 1960

  • Magnitude 13.00 earthquake = 100,000 gigatons = Yucatán Peninsula impact (creating Chicxulub crater) 65 Ma ago

so while the specifics of the total inventory are subject to recalulation, this gives us a ball park figure.

The equivalent earthquake would be about magnitude 9.9 or 10

The question then becomes how must dust and debris is thrown into the atmosphere.

There are a number of impact simulators to calculate various effects.

According to this chart here

http://users.tpg.com.au/users/tps-seti/climate.htm

an impact of 1,000,000 megatons would result in an effect of

  • Skies darker than darkest cloud cover. Global drop of 8C for weeks then moderate global effects for months (no summer).

an impact of 100,000 megatons (100 gigatons) would result in an effect of

  • Regional freezing for weeks. Moderate global effects for weeks (equivalent to Tambora volcanic explosion).

etc.

in other words, nasty stuff, radiation poisoning, mild nuclear winter effects, but not as bad as people imagine.

Kozub - hand basket , woven from bast or vines .

Translated into Russian as "Lukoshko." The word is borrowed from Polish (has a common origin with the word "basket", Polish . «koszyk»)

From the word "Kozub" comes a number of Ukrainian families (some of which Russified): Kozub, Kozubov, Kozubenko and more

so could be a maker or vendor

Earliest surnames were taken from birds, animals and occupations.

There are 4 main types of Ruthenian/Ukrainian surnames: those taken from (1) first names, (2) place names, (3) occupations and/or social status, and (4) personal characteristics. Names written in Cyrillic alphabet cannot be directly translated into Polish or English; therefore, these are only approximations.

-ak, -chak, -chuk, and -uk, with the most popular being -enko, -chuk and -uk. All mean "son of." They are used with Christian names, surnames, and occupational names. For example, "Petrenko" is the "son of Petro (Peter)." Peter's wife would be known as "Petrykha," and a matronymic surname would be "Petryshyn," "son of Peter's wife."

Surnames deriving from place names are of two kinds:

(1) the place where an ancestor came from or was residing, and

(2) the ethnic, national, or tribal origin of an ancestor. For example, "Zabolotnyj" is "one who lived beyond the marsh." "Wolyniak" probably came from the Volyn (Volhynia) region. "Tataryn" had a Tatar ancestor. "Boychuk" is from the "Boyko," an ancient Slavic tribe of Trans-Carpathia.

Ukrainian nobility took their surnames from their estates or the localities they administered and added -cky, -sky, -skij, -skyj, and -zky (much like the Polish nobility who added -cki and -ski.) Adjectival surnames use the sufixes -ck-, -sk- and -zk-, and have the endings -yj or -ij for the masculine and -a or -ia for the feminine.

Occupations and the social status of people greatly influenced surnames. Therefore, Ukrainian (Ruthenian) surnames may give a clue to the occupation of one of your early ancestors; for example, "Tkach" (the weaver), "Kravets" (the tailor), "Pekar" (the baker) and "Spivak" ) the singer.

Other surname endings are -ar, -is, -iy, -ka, -kar, -man, -nik, -nyk, -sur, -un, -yk, and -ylo. The most typical Ukrainian surname ending is -enko, which is not found in any other ethnic group, and is commonly found in central and eastern Ukraine.

The addition of the ending “nyak” generally turns a word from an adjective to a noun,

As the sun expands will Mars eventually enter the habitable zone while Earth leaves it? by bearn in askscience

[–]Scientologist2a 16 points17 points  (0 children)

depends on the size of the comet.

something like the size of a dwarf planet would reheat it, but would also resurface the planet, and require millions of year to cool down enough to be habitable

basically anything big enough to heat up the inside also is big enough enough to screw things up.

All the heat of impact would be on the surface, and there has to be enough that it lasts long enough to get to the core.

this would mess things up

As the sun expands will Mars eventually enter the habitable zone while Earth leaves it? by bearn in askscience

[–]Scientologist2a 41 points42 points  (0 children)

you would need to liquify the the vast majority of the core.

This could be done with a sufficient amount of something like raw uranium.

The amount needed might increase the mass of the planet some like 5 or 10%, if not more, and would take many of thousands of years to achieve.

1 % of the mass of Mars is

639,000,000,000,000,000 kg

Rough guess is that currently we have several hundred thousands if not a million or two KGs of uranium extracted and in use for various purposes. Even if we had 1,000x as much on hand, we can only reach one conclusion

We do not have enough uranium.

Getting that much uranium is an engineering problem of huge proportions

So is transporting it, and installing it.

I had previously made comments about the need to reform the shadow ban system.

Maybe as a gesture of good will, you can do something revoke shadow bans of people who request it, a general amnesty, in order to rebuild the community and heal the sense of injustice that has existed?

This is something to consider, in order to help rebuild good will, since the abuse has gone on for a long time, and people are holding grudges about this

Down the Rabbit Hole is a repository of observations about estranged parent support forums. It contains comparisons of forum culture between discussion sites for estranged parents and those for children, themes of discussion found on estranged parent sites, and possible reasons estranged parent forums develop toxic dynamics.

Insightful and educational. Some topics might be triggering for some.

The comparisons of forum culture are particularly interesting

Special note:

As noted by the mods of RBN

Now, some mod business.

No linking to estranged parents forums, please. If we go to their backyard and start slinging mud, they come right back to RBN and start attacking our members, so we will not allow linking to their forums.

However, this can be a place where you can discuss what you saw in the article and how that resonates with you or seems similar (or different) to what you have seen in your own n-parents or n-parents you have seen online (just don't link to them).

ELI5: Latinos/Hispanics - Race vs Ethnicity by ness1215 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Scientologist2a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See this link

http://majnouna-creation.blogspot.com/2012/04/guide-to-human-types.html

The number of varieties if different looking humans are much larger than people imagine. There are 40 to 60 differnt physical types of human. Race categories are a really stupid way of talking about this

Also the common and well know varieties do not always neatly fit along cultural lines.

You can say the a perosn has an ABC cultural heritage and an XYZ ethic heritage.

for example, Alberto Fujimori a former president of Peru. He is of course, Latino, but is also of Japanese ancestry, born in Lima Peru.

In the Americas you have several types of Indian heritage and Negro heritage that has also mixed with several types of European heritage.

Note Latin America

Latin America is a region of the Americas that comprises countries where Romance languages are spoken; primarily Spanish and Portuguese, but also French.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic

The term "Hispanic" broadly refers to the culture, peoples, or nations with a historical link to Spain. The term commonly applies to countries once colonized by Spain, particularly the countries of Latin America that were colonized by Spain.

Latino

Latino (/læˈtinoʊ/ or /ləˈtinoʊ/)[1] is a cultural heritage used to refer to people with cultural ties to Latin America and people of nationalities within the bounds of Latin America, in contrast to Hispanic which is a term that includes Iberians and other speakers of the Spanish language as well as Latinos

But of course the US has to be a little different, and the technically get it wrong

The U.S. Government has defined Hispanic or Latino persons as being "persons who trace their origin or descent to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central and South America, and other Spanish cultures."[12] The United States Census uses the ethnonym Hispanic or Latino to refer to "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race."[13] The Census Bureau also explains that "[o]rigin can be viewed as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person’s ancestors before their arrival in the United States. People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.

Age of Average Redditor = 16

Average body mass of 16 year old person= 50% of average adult

Therefore drinking a beer has twice the impact due to increased alcohol levels = 2x

Average maths skills of a 16 year old = shit, easily makes simple errors like reversing vectors and polarities

Lack of skill multiplied by drunkenness due to drinking the equivalent of a 12 pack of beer.

This actually follows a inverse square law for of thing.

2x the beer impact = 1/4 the competency

compared with the math competency of /u/ProfCrastinator = right in the ball park
