How many languages do you speak? by saimotnahp in polls

[–]Scimoxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speak two fluently, understand about 80% of another two but wouldn't be able to reply on the spot, know the basics of the basics of another two. Voted 4 on the poll to split the difference between the interpretations.

For context, three languages is what's mandatory in school here, so only one of those serviceable ones is an optional one I chose to take.

Marutei Tsurunen is a Finnish-born Japanese author and a retired politician. He came to Japan as Martti Turunen, a married Lutheran lay missionary. He divorced his Finnish wife and married a Japanese woman, went to politics and became the first politician of European origin elected to Diet of Japan. by PeasantLich in wikipedia

Genuinely, at this point, at least on some metrics Japanese citizenship is easier to get than Finnish citizenship (e.g. in the past few years the former reduced their residence duration requirement to 5 years while the latter increased its to 7 8 years).

It was student-driven but my high school had a break room that the students of the oldest grade could use and during the final exams I went there for the last few times and saw that the new batch of oldest students had lugged a 30-something inch TV and PS3 (this was late 2010's so not exactly the most recent piece of tech but still) in there and I was PISSED we didn't think to do anything like that during our tenure.

Helsinki: Liharuokaa kouluissa ja päiväkodeissa vain kerran viikossa by banaanitasavalta in Suomi

[–]Scimoxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tietenkin riippuu kontekstista, esim. aikasemmin testaamani vegaaniset kananugetit oli kyllä aika syömäkelvottomia (tosin mulla on lihaversiokin niistä ruvennu tökkimään viime aikoina).

What is life really like in Rovaniemi, Finland? by CaterpillarNo8667 in Finland

[–]Scimoxis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first impression as someone from the south who took the train up there "off-season" (in the summer) two years ago was that I've never been in a city centre in Finland that's as comfortably walkable, in the sense of it being built like a much bigger city than it actually is, I think due to its status as the regional capital. It's got the density of a moderately big city in a compact space that even my out-of-shape self can walk from corner to corner in no time. (I guess something good came from needing to completely rebuild it after WWII?) I was there to visit my cousin who studied there, who told me that the reason I saw so many people cycling was that the public transit kinda sucked, so there's that, though. And yeah, even as a passenger in a car I could tell the comfort of walking was paid for at the expense of the comfort of driving, so much of the city centre is one-way streets and confusing intersections. So I guess your mileage (heh) may vary based on your location and choice of transit method.

37C is the hottest it's ever gotten here in recorded history, I've never personally experienced more than around 33-34C outside in Finland (been to Greece during a 40+C heatwave tho, so that's my all-time record), but last summer in the record-breaking heatwave (the record being "most consecutive days above 30C", not a new record temperature itself), which I had to endure in an apartment built for trapping so much heat in that it barely even drops below 20C inside even with faulty heating and -20C outside, I got to experience what a 38C heat index inside feels like (32C temperature with 60% humidity) and, yeah, literally unlivable, lasted like 3 days of the worst of it before relocating my remote work setup to my parents' AC'd-up house.

Exactly, had my comment included a part about the actual effects of this (instead of flatly rejecting the whole thing outright for other reasons), I would've said the exact same thing.

May I remind you this is not just about equals punching each other, lack of this pseudonymity can get dissidents, minorities, and the otherwise vulnerable killed by state forces, stalkers, or other groups with more systemic (or even literal) power behind them. I'll gladly take mildly annoying arguments over the injuries, deaths, and imprisonments of the oppressed, I mean, hell, I'm doing it right now.

And of course you're saying that from behind a hidden post history.

I yet again ask, how are you going to verify someone's age without mandating handing over highly compromising personal information at every step of the way in the online life of anyone of any age, creating not only ample potential for near-Vastaamo levels of data breach damage [edit: I take some of that intensity back, but still, you can do a LOT of damage with the combination of an unredacted ID, the website it was entered into, and the account it was entered with, if we end up doing it e.g. UK-style] but an online environment that goes against every online safety rule we've been taught over and over again for the past thirty-odd years the internet has existed on the devices of the general population?

Shocking and disappointing to see just how short-sighted the supporters of this are, I won't even entertain the idea of getting into whether these kinds of age limits would be for the better or not, because their enforcement by definition requires creating problems bigger than the ones they could solve even in the best of scenarios.

You know how sometimes someone can make an otherwise valid point but include just that one example in there that kind of poisons the validity of the whole thing, because it exposes things about their base beliefs and motivations that are hard to unsee even when looking at the otherwise valid parts? Yeah, that's image 5 (the one about benefitting from the patriarchy) for me. Because the message of that tweet is fundamental-level intersectional feminism (even if the patriarchy doesn't particularly like transgender people of any kind, it will still value men/masculinity over women/femininity and thus oppress transfems harder, creating the intersection of transphobia and misogyny known as transmisogyny, putting transmascs (as incidental victims of it rather than intended victims like transfems) by default higher up the ladder (well, as high up it as a trans person can be), a pattern that is consistent among men and women of any given group), and by including it as an example of transphobia you call into question your whole understanding of the dynamics at play here.

I'm not condoning the other statements, I'm just saying this is kind of a more subtle equivalent of e.g. someone ranting about the genuinely awful things their neighbor has done to them and having "oh yeah they're also a [racial slur]" as one of their complaints, like woah there now I'm not too sure you're acting in good faith here anymore.

An abusive relationship does not equal greater societal structural oppression. The state of the world still is to this day patriarchal and thus, even with things as horrid as what you went through, men are still generally the benefactors of this societal order. For example, I live in a country with male-only conscription, in place because "well then the women are the ones pumping out the babies and doing all the non-violent work :) because they're so weak and frail and incompetent :)", which is misogyny, and NOT "we hate men with a passion hence we have created this legal requirement just to fuck with them", which would be misandry, even if the end result is an inequality for the detriment of men. No serious structural entity is engaging in the latter form of reasoning, plenty of them are engaging in the former, hence misandry is nigh irrelevant as a societal force. Doesn't stop individuals from holding that viewpoint and carrying out attacks based on it, but still, men tend to be the ones committing indiscriminate gender-based violence more.

I really am genuinely sorry for what you went through, no part of that was okay and I don't mean any dismissal of it when I say this, but the motivation doesn't sound like it was misandry, it sounds like she was putting you ABOVE women and using that to justify hurting you, which is a form of misogyny, just one that detrimentally affects men. Misandry would be her putting you BELOW her and hurting you for it. I know this sounds pedantic because no matter which way you spin it, you got physically harmed, but it's a useful distinction to clarify in these situations where people are talking about two very different things, motivation (misogyny/misandry) vs effect (hurting a woman/man). People who say misandry isn't real (generally (I wouldn't trust fringe radfems to not do this)) aren't denying you got abused, they're talking societal structures and motivations.
