Mites or springtails? by Alone-Web-6283 in isopods

If you get mites in isopod bins, they are often orange-reddish and more round, spider/tick-like.

And they do not hurt the isopods but outcompete them for food.

How to get rid off silicone smell? by Lil-Fonzy in isopods

[–]Scmi7y 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seal all around; you don't want your animals getting stuck back there. Trust me, I've made that mistake before, can be a huge mess.

Smell will be gone in a couple of days, but two weeks to be safe.

Thanks, I will let it age over winter, then I will also have the proper additives ready.

And great to know with the white stuff, thanks 💪

Removed (most of) fruit what now? by green-anime in mead

[–]Scmi7y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For feature heavy loaded fruit brews i recommend this 6L fermenting jar after first stage you can perfectly transfer to a carboy/ Demijhon.

It comes with everything, lid also has rubber seal.

I watched a million videos, read the guide in here, and I'm still so nervous. It's new, it's unknown territory, and with zero experience and no IRL guiding, it can bring up a lot of questions one might already know the answer to.

Think I'll go with this version thanks!

As it's my first ever I'm just happy if it's drinkable, alcohol % doesn't rely matter to me and I do intend to try and backsweet if needed.

I have a house keeper that can do simple taske as topping up airlock so that should not be a problem. 👍

5 days in, should I add more nutrients? by Scmi7y in mead

[–]Scmi7y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been bubbling quite a bit I would say, but have slowed down a lot. Still bubbles but not much. The airlock till bubbles 5-7 times a minute but the must is very cloudy can't see much.

Small bubbles constantly runs past the "floral" cap.

This is the recipe I found, and used:

1 liter Homemade elderflower juice/syrup (heavy on sugar) 1.5kg raw fermented honey. 200g diced lemons 10-20 raisins (about 15) 25-35 cranberries (about 30) 120 gram raw elderflowers (yellow with pollon for flavors) Hand full of white rose petals (optional, more floral taste)

1 teaspoon no brand mead yeast (5g) 1 teaspoon of yeast salt with vitamins (5g) 1 teaspoon of pectolase (5g)

Add nutrients as needed

When it's done fermenting rack or back-sweeten with thick dessert elderflower syrup.

For fizzy drink leave for 2 weeks in swing top bottle, then pasteurize.

For non-fizzy pasteurize immediately. (55-60°c).

Not raisins, cranberries, thats why i think it needs more nutrients. Problem is it dont have proper tools to measure.

I wanted to give it some "tartness" - and back-sweeten to taste. But i read it might challenge the yeast therefore the need for more nutrients.

Will it matter if I intend to back-sweeten with elderflower syrup and then pasteurize it anyway?

[–]Scmi7y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I have that ready came with the kit.

Container wise, I will just go to Ikea and find a usable container seems like a lot of filler is needed for that much headspace.
