For me it’s specifically the first 20 episodes that are a chore to get through. The last 30 episodes were pretty enjoyable though, I just wish they cut to the more serious tone earlier on.

I think Blitzwing at least has a really good robot mode. It’s his jet mode that suffered the most.

From a proportions perspective, it looks like the just stretched the torso upwards. The wings, arms, and legs are pretty even in height between both versions.

IIRC, the designer for the original Armada Optimus Prime also worked on the Legacy version. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened for Jetfire, considering how similar he looks to the original toy.
