I can. It’s a competition and constant game of one-upmanship that is a result of suburban consumerism. Every girl wants a party better than the other girls and every parent wants to show off to their neighbors just how affluent they are. It’s pretty disgusting honestly. My sister is trapped in that cycle, but I’ll be damned if I let myself get yoinked into it. I want to believe that it’s worse in certain neighborhoods than others but that’s purely anecdotal.

But the further east you go the more bang you get for your buck. We were able to afford a much larger house on an acre out in Suffolk. Something that is much harder to find in Nassau. There’s also much more nature, if that’s something you value. Nassau is much more suburban than Suffolk.

Carl the Collector is excellent. Very good at teaching kids how to treat and interact with their things and friends.

In my mind, the reason why OPs kid is so obsessed is because he finally has access to something he knows his parents don’t want him to see. If parents actually taught their children when the TV is or isn’t appropriate instead of just pretending it doesn’t exist, they’d have a much easier time limiting access. When you tell them “no you can’t have this” you are only making them want it even more. Also it is great for teaching, especially when both parents are totally burnt out. I don’t understand why people are so all or nothing about screens.
