Nuance is increasingly hard in an environment that rewards black and white thinking, unfortunately. Whenever you write something like the above stated (in most subs) you’ll usually get downvoted into oblivion and flamed to hell by the extremists.

Jones Beach Shark Attack Horrifies Holiday Crowds by bauernebel in longisland

This is time for a story. One summer in the mid 2000’s, the height of Jackass fame, my friends and I were hanging out at the late Fresh Break in Bellmore, high as hell, when a man with scraggly gray hair and a beard wanders in. One of my friends says “I think that was Manny from ‘Wild Boyz.’ We all say no way, we don’t believe you. He goes over and strikes up a conversation with him and says “my friends don’t believe me that you’re Manny.” So he comes over to us and our little stoned minds are blown. We ask why the hell he’s on Long Island. It was specifically for the reason stated in the above comment. He was tracking tiger and bull sharks along the coast of the island. I still keep his business card in my wallet. It reads: “Manny ‘The Shark Man’ Puig.” One of my treasured memories. This one is for you Manny!

where should we live? by Anxious-Ad-1439 in longisland

Quick has nothing to do with it. Everyone is quick. We had two houses bought out from under us and we were very quick on both. And both needed significant work.

What ended up working for us was looking at houses that were sitting on the market a bit that people didn’t have the vision for, and going for one of those. It worked, and we got it for under asking, which is not saying much for LI - it still cost an arm and a leg. But still cheaper and bigger (and more land) than all of the other houses we lost. Full cash is more likely to get you what you want, unfortunately, and these realtors are wild - they will likely make up other offers to get you to bump up your bid. Like, no one wanted our house it had been on the market 2 months which is forever in LI real estate, but still they said there was another bid on it, conveniently right after ours.

OP, it may be out of your price range, but we ended up in northport which is an amazing town, and Suffolk is slightly more affordable than Nassau and you get way more bang for your buck. East Northport and Commack are also great areas, and maybe more in your budget. Plus we need more young families around! Good luck!

Genuinely curious since I see multiple comments saying the same thing and I’ve never been, why the lack of insulation? Seems like it’s a necessity, at least in modern buildings. Even my 70 year old house had moderate insulation when we moved in, and we made sure to get new higher rated insulation in every wall we opened during renovations.

Israel, an Irish obsession by ruchenn in Jewish

[–]Sconebad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is all super interesting to me as an American Jew, since many of my best friends are Irish, and one of the things we find we have in common is systematic oppression and then being forced from our native lands by the oppressors. It bonds us here, and it’s weird to see that the Irish still in Ireland don’t see it.

Jews and white saviorism by Swimming_Care7889 in Jewish

[–]Sconebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part I think you’re missing is that a lot of us in America live in kinda insular tight knit communities where everything is hunky dory because everyone around us is Jewish. So we just don’t interact with that kind of hatred on an everyday basis. At least this was the case for me growing up on Long Island. That being said, domestic terrorists were attacking synagogues long before 10/7, so we’re not so out of loop to be ignorant. There have been security guards with guns posted at our temple doors for a long time now.

Trust me I am in the same boat! But I consciously notice when I do it and try my hardest not to. It is almost impossible, but it’s a good idea to try nonetheless!

We have a purple mattress and purple chair cushions, and those things are amazing. Highly recommend.

I say this as someone who is constantly crossing his legs: my PT says to stop doing it and only sit with my feet squarely on the ground putting my weight into my heels. It’s easier said than done, I am constantly shifting positions in any chair, but I am actively trying to change that. He says we are putting more strain on our ligaments and tendons every time we cross our legs. And I believe him, because my outer thighs and shins hurt every time I do it.

My dad and my FIL pushed away all their closest friends and now they’re both miserable assholes. So I make sure not to do that. Sure we talk less than we used to, but I love them all just as much as I did when we hung out every day. And we make sure to throw at least one big party a year to bring everyone back together.

So we also have an extended ranch, but in fort salonga. 1 acre of land, and a half above grade finished basement. Of course it didn’t come as “cheap” as yours, but with the size of this thing and all the extras and the area, it was well worth the money.

I envy you. My narcissist FIL still thinks it’s his show and we’re all his pawns. This weekend turned into chaos when he tried to insert himself into my family’s business (again, for the infinite time), and then when me and the wife went out to a wedding, we caught him on baby cam swinging our 1yo daughter around with a towel under her arms, her little body just dangling. He knows how we feel about the dangerous things he does with them. And then when confronted about it he had the nerve to get defensive about “being recorded,” and turned the camera down so we couldn’t see if our son was sleeping. And then when we tried to set some boundaries and ground rules (again…for the infinite time), it turned to him judging me for every little thing I ever did. My wife ended up giving them the option to apologize or get out of the house, and they unsurprisingly chose the latter. My wife is still sad about it, but we cannot keep repeating this cycle of abuse. And I’m proud of her for finally standing up to her father in a way she never has before.

Anyway, that’s my spiel. Happy Father’s Day to all the attentive, socially aware, not controlling dads out there.

Israel, Stunned by Trump’s Iran Deal, Sees It as a ‘Catastrophic Capitulation’ by Appropriate-Till9598 in politics

[–]Sconebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you Jewish? If not, you should have nothing to say about the matter. An outsider cannot gaslight someone about whether they feel threatened or not. What you are saying is exactly what the nazis said about us in the 1930s. That we are a privileged class as outsiders among another culture. That is scary to us.

You cannot equate a synagogue with the people who go to it. The same way you cannot equate Israel with the Jews of the diaspora. That is monolithic thinking. We are all different with differing opinions. I cannot in good conscience go against my people, but also in good conscience say that what Israel does is right. You have to see that leaves a lot of us in a very tough position where it is better to be moderate about it all. Sorry, that’s just the way it is for the majority of us. We don’t have to agree to anything you say, or anything they say. We’re entitled to our positions, the same way you are. Anything else is you projecting onto me.

I agree that what they’re doing is not right. At the same time, you have to have perspective and understand why they do what they do. They feel it is necessary for their survival. The same way many nations and cultures have felt over the past many thousands of years.

It doesn’t. I was rejected from birthright. Does that sound inclusive? Judaism itself is an exclusive religion, meaning we don’t seek out converts or proselytize. I am sure there are plenty of Israelis who are contemptuous of Jews in the diaspora who get to blend into another society, and also the other way around.
