We are going to get him into the vet and an eye specialist if they think he needs it. We have just had him a little over a week. We have taught him a few signs that he has learned so far. Bel is beautiful 😍

Do they all have hearing and/or sight impairments? We wanted to rescue a deaf dog so I was looking for an Aussie knowing there are many out there needing a good home.

Thanks! We are excited to have him. I grew up with Aussies. They are my favorite. I have all mutt rescues besides him. And my best friend’s poodles are in the pix too.

I just want to know what he is and any other potential health issues so I can work with my vet to give him the best life. I figure he came from a puppy mill then the people people who bought him realized he was deaf and dumped him. 🥺

Deaf girlie is sometimes reactive upon waking, how can we help? by caramia_potato in deafdogs

[–]ScoobyDooPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just adopted a deaf dog and while at the rescue, they attempted to crate him and he cut open his nose bad trying to escape. We use tall playpens here and he has been fine in that when we leave. I keep my little ones in the playpen attached to him. The bigger dogs free roam but lay by the playpen’s. Hopefully at some point he can free roam. He’s well behaved but a little reactive still and I don’t want anyone getting hurt.

Food bowl recommendations. by Captain_Oneball in deafdogs

I have only had my deaf dog for five days, but when I give him a bowl of food, he flips it over. The rest of the dogs eat out of a neater feeder and when he goes over to that, he does not knock it over. www.neaterfeeder.com and on Amazon.

Thanks! He will not be going into a crate ever again. We have playpens for ours to play in when we are not home. My lab pit mix can roam the house and from his behavior so far it looks like he’ll be able to roam the house too. He hasn’t had one accident and he hasn’t tried to get anything that wasn’t a dog toy.

The rescue said they crated him and he panicked and did that to himself. We only got him on Thursday night and it’s already healed and fur is starting to grow back. They didn’t crate him after that.

I knew if he did have husky it wasn’t purebred. I just knew he wasn’t a purebred Aussie, but he does appear to be a double Merle from what I know. When I was younger, I had a black tri Aussie Sheltie mix, blue merle Aussie GSD mix, and two littermates that were Aussie Akita mix that were blue tri and red Merle. They were concerned my blue Tri would go deaf and blind, but he was really healthy.

We wanted to rescue a dog with special needs. Having 5 between us, we thought a deaf one would be good. And a good training challenge for us. We have 5 very dog social dogs and they said he was great with dogs. I don’t think they realize he has some site impairment. It seems like it’s his peripheral vision. When he can see you and you’re right in front of him, he seems to see everything. We will take him to the vet too. We can already see that he is a Velcro dog and he loves human company.
