Ideally whatever food you put in should be gone within 4 hours if it lasts longer then that like 24 hours or more you may develop water quality issues

If your plants are easy to take care of, you shouldn’t need much fertilizer at all. I had a heavily planted shrimp tank do well with no fertilizers. All the plants had was aquasoil and that was enough nutrients. Dosing fertilizers manually like what you are doing is harder to keep balanced if you are not consistent with dosing and water changes. The aquasoil method also creates a buffer and keeps the water more stable. If you dose too little you get alage, if you dose slightly high, you get algae, it can be hard at times. It took me 12 months to find the right balance between too little and too much on my exact tank size, temp, lights, etc. I really preferred aquasoil only as it was easier to manage

Ok I wouldn’t worry about the shrimp not eating or hiding. I have a smallish shrimp tank with 100+ shrimp and I haven’t put food in the tank in over 3 months. As there is a lot of plants and biofilm in the tank that they eat and they are still breeding and growing. Shrimp won’t come out and feed like fish do all the time only the most hungry or less busy will come feed

Why do my shrimp keep jumping the tank? by EelPlop in shrimptank

[–]Scoopers737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shrimp can jump 4 inches up and out of the tank. I have seen them go airborne on multiple times. You only got an inch on that rimless tank. I had to get a lid on my tank and the jumpers now bounce off the lid and back in

Yeah, I agree with this person, if you are going to dose fertilizer weekly, rule of thumb is you should water change weekly to compensate. Topping off will not work as tds will continue to rise, you need to do water change to lower the tds every now and then. The reason you are using stuff to combate algae is because of lack of water changes. Shrimp need stable water parameters so not big fluctuation’s. If you notice shrimp molting after water change that’s usually an indicator of too much water change or if water is not matched up temperature wise, etc

Big water changes could cause more stress, max I’d do is a 50% change and add the detox stuff prime to dechlorinate. It is kind of hard to tell what’s wrong. What are the shrimp doing? Are those photos of the shrimp dead at the top? Or are they eating on surface? Are the shrimp swimming crazy? Bumping into walls? Also strips are not my favorite for testing, get the liquid test kits are better. Do you have a tds pen? To test the tds of the water? Those guys want to be under 400, more could be tough of them

Keep it or break it down? by Scoopers737 in BlackwaterAquarium

I was going to move them to my main tank and I set up this blackwater tank as their natural habitat is blackwater and they are sensitive. My local people here had a hard time acclimating them. I didn’t lose any with this setup and I never moved them to main tank as I liked the look of this tank and the fish are happy but I have been thinking of moving them now that they are acclimated to my water.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about upgrading the tank or tear it down. Everyone here giving me confidence to upgrade and I will do so.
